    Week 4/19 DCM 2017

Second week of hols and it is a bit of a challenge to get the sessions done with late nights etc. So far so good all the same. Home for 3 days and then headed west for along weekend reunion.

    Tuesday 11th July
First run in Oireland after a late night/early morning return. Got out the door into a gentle breeze and pleasant sunshine without the continental heat. Relief. After tough sessions on hols I wondered if I was losing my form.

    16km Easy Run 5:32/km and hr 143.

    Wednesday 12th July
8.3 km Recovery run at 6:03/km and hr 132. Very tired and dehydrated.

    Thursday 13th July
Had woken up 2-3 times during the night and was going to cancel this run as I wasn't feeling 100%. By the time I woke things had improved so I went out the door to see and decided that I would run this by feel. Tested my new water bottle belt and a gel late in the run. All worked out well. Ran out the last 5km at the fast end of my pace range. felt good.

    24.6 km at 5:58 /km.

    Saturday 15th July
Nice and handy 8km Recovery Run from Ennistymon to Lahinch and back. The hills made up for the slower pace!!!!. Enjoyed the run and noticed a field ridge with 2 ancient earthen defensive/ritual mounds that I had never noticed in the car before. Will be making enquiries about this.

    Sunday 16th July
Back to Dublin for The Leinster Final and squeezed in the 13 km with 10x100m later in the evening. Watch died at 12.3 km but did complete the 13 km. As often happens the earlier slower kms were harder but once I got up to speed after 3 kms the run went very well.

    13 km at 5:29 /km ish.

    Week 4 DCM 2017
    Plan Kms: 67 kms
    Actual Kms: 70 kms
    All sessions completed

Great going on the holiday runs, D.

Spotted Mick Clohissey carrying water the other day so if it's good enough for him, no reason for the rest of us not to do it! Love your comment about the stuff you spot out running that's invisible from the car. Your post reminds me of something possibly of a similar ancient vintage I came across in Donegal recently but had forgotten about. Must look it up now.

Excellent start to the marathon block.

Cheers Anne. And you will be happy to know that they have rebuilt the promenade after several years of winter storms. Spent a lot of my own childhood on that beach too back in the day when Sun Factor 4 on meant you could spend the whole day out in the sun

Alas, all those beautiful rounded beach stones have long since been reclaimed by nature and buried but the beach still looks and feels pretty good.

    Tuesday 18th July
    14km with 8km at 15km Race Pace
Warm morning and headed down to the coast for the sun and sea. Fairly strong breeze which put the cat amongst the pigeons for this session. Ran the warm up and then head for the first 4km into the breeze. This was hard....way too hard and I just about made it to the turning point (4:37, 4:39, 4:36 and 4:42) before continuing with the wind now on my back (4:35, 4:37, 4:38 and 4:39). Was so shattered and thirsty after this that I had to stop and get some water and shade for 10 minutes before the cooldown to complete the mileage.

    Wednesday 19th July
    Recovery Run 8km.
Kept this very easy and averaged 6:01/km.

    Friday 21st July
    16km GA.
Made a conscious decision to be careful with this run. Stayed roughly mid point on my pace range. HR device not working so just had to rely on how I was feeling which was no bad thing in the circumstances. Have taken in an extra park to increase the mileage on these runs. Bit of a theme on strava this week (watch this space).

    Saturday 22nd July
    7 km Recovery Run
Headed down to Fairview Park for the Parkrun and linked up with Laura, of these parts, for a very enjoyable and pleasant run. Annapr and Muprh d and (Annapr JNR - great job on the scanning) were volunteering along with BG and Bg jnr on cheerleading duties - Nice job folks. I believe Aquinn was also there but was in lightening form - so I missed her - nice run A.

    Sunday 23rd July
26km LR with 16km at MP

Have not set an MP in stone yet as there are a number of other considerations (weight, Frank Duffy and a determination to use this year to make progress rather than notch up a DNF at this stage). Visit to Doctor on Friday who recommended Berocca for Vitamin B. Had not been feeling the strongest lately and think the hols sight seeing and running in the heat was a fair challenge. Plan was to head out on the first 21kms of the DCM running the first 8 km for a warmup and then pushing on for the 16 kms MP along Chesterfield Ave to Crumlin and back in to South Circular Road.

Ttied to read the route and allow for incline/decline with the pacing which worked well. The most significant pull up from Chapelizod to Sarsfield Road only cost me 4 seconds so most of a decent reserve built up earlier was not needed. Was a useful run to see where I am at for Frank Duffy 10 miler in a few weeks as well.

No gels this time and needed minimum water as I had fuelled and watered well over the last 3 days. A good run and a fair old test but I was running within the 5 mins/km to the very end. Hard to believe after a very tough session on Tuesday over a much shorter distance. Had felt that something was not quite right earlier in the week.

Lots of great running out there in Fingal today. Great to see the results one and all.

    Week 5
    Plan 72 kms
Actual 71 kms - made a mistake yesterday and did a 7km Recovery Run instead of 8. Well if it all goes wrong on the day then I will know the reason :D

That's a bit of a random thing for 'one' to have :D. Is there such a thing as an unofficial park?! Maybe stick the list up somewhere here and we can start a ratings system for the best parks to run!

Well, there was some debate on this point recently. As I am a researcher at heart I emailed the corpo for a list, as the DCC website had some obvious omissions, and my instinct is to go to the source and verify rather than speculate. ;) This might seem a little obsessive but my experience is that people and organisations generally appreciate such requests and like when you take an interest in what they do.

Yes, I might start a thread on parks, good idea. :)

    A Recovery Week

    Tuesday 25th July
Had been having some problems with my Garmin HR transmitter but eventually solved the problem by deliberately shorting the battery contacts. I am no electrical engineer but this apparently forces a reset!!!. At that stage that a HR monitor is pretty damn useful so was not too worried if the supposed remedy led to a forced new transmitter purchase. Miserly me... things worked out and I get to keep my few bob for now.

GA 13 kms with 10x100m strides. Session went fine and the strides, in particular, went very well. Kept within the hr range. Just checked this run against exact same sessions 12 months ago. Running each km 5 secs/km faster and hr is 10 bpm lower now. Sometimes you just don't see the progress.

    13 kms GA 5:34/km and hr 143.

    Wednesday 26th July
Headed to St. Annes in the early evening to get a few kms done on the grass for a change. Had a post work coffee meetup close by. A strange run and I cannot quite put my finger on it. Was going to quit after 4 km. Felt a bit dejected and was not feeling the love for what I was doing. Headed off on a path I had not been on before and the journey improved. It improved to a point that I continued and finished the session. That helped.

Recovery Run 8 km. 6:11/km and hr 134.

    Friday 28th July
    13 km GA Run
Following some recent banter on the nature and form of our public spaces I decided to try and link up a few of the local Public Parks on a run. This was done on the hoof with no pre-planning. Managed to pass through 9 Parks (In one gate and out another). Added a bit of fun and interest.

Not a bad recovery run and kept the hr on a leash regardless of how I was feeling.

14.2kms, 5:41/km and hr 146. Had a lot more ascent completed in this run than normal.

    Saturday 29th July
Was up on the Fermanagh/Cavan border hillwalking for the day and managed to get an impromptu 8km recovery run done on the boardwalk at Legnabrocky. Nice day and lots in the hills.

    Sunday 30th July
Last run for Recovery Week. Decided to head out on the DCM route between Terenure and RTE to see what I could remember of the hills. Thinking was that as I would be running nice and easy that I would have a pleasant introduction to bank in my memory at this early stage. It proved to be the case. Very pleasant run and the hills softened with every step. Made it into UCD to get some extra kms done on their woodland cinder track. Well worth a visit in my opinion.

    19kms at 5:48/km and hr at 141.

    Week 6/19 DCM 2017
    Plan kms 59
    Actual kms 62.2

That will do nicely and so I finish Mesocycle 1 (Endurance). Have also dropped a bit of the weight that I had planned for July but official weigh in is tomorrow.

Next week starts Mesocycle 2 - Lactate Threshold+Endurance. Very happy to start into this as I will be using this cycle to work on timings for the upcoming Frank Duffy 10 miler.

Happy running and recovering one and all.

    Mesocycle 2 (Lactate Threshold+Endurance)

This would be the greatest mileage I have ever tackled on a programme .

    Tuesday 1st August
16 km with 8 km at LT (4:35)
Headed down to St. Annes Park as a warmup for 5km and then hit the Parkrun Course for 8 kms. The tree cover played havoc with the first km in particular. Thought I was well on target until the numbers flashed up.

    4:51, 4:44, 4:33, 4:43, 4:25, 4:32, 4:34 and 4:34.

Ran 3 km cooldown on the way home. Tough session and hr hit 91% of MHR towards the end. Paced another aulder lad on 2nd LT km who said I was making it look easy . Always take the compliment......no matter how you feel :o.

Was pleased with this session and recovered on the cooldown very quickly. Cooldown was way too fast. Had headaches later in the morning from dehydration.

    Wednesday 2nd August
6 km Recovery Run which was run exactly as prescribed. Blustery but felt good.

    6km Recovery 6:08/km and HR 131

    Thursday 3rd August
Mid LR Day. First one on the programme and a bit of a novelty to be running a little further midweek. Very much taking this programme one day at a time.

Ran around the NE of the City and then down to Bull Island through St. Annes Park. Very humid and was parched. Managed to get some extra water on board at the Interpretative Centre. Ran the last 9 kms into a good strong wind including an exposed few kms along the beach and promenade. Loved this run.

    18 kms, MLR, 5:44/km and HR 143

    Saturday 5th August

11km GA so did a few km and then headed to the start of the Fairview Parkrun. Arrived 2 mins late so ran back to the start and then headed after the sweeper to catch up with the fun. Enjoyed the banter and exchanges over the 5km and even made a few places up for all my sins. Ran this way faster than I should have and finished the run off with a cooldown towards home. Hope that I
would not pay the price tomorrow for any exuberance. Went to Croker for the
games...not great to be honest. Just appears to be too big a gap between the current top tier of 3-4 and the next tier. A shame.2

    11.1 kms GA 5:10/km and HR 148

    Sunday 6th August
LR Day. Had an early morning collection so was up, breakfasted and relaxed for a 6am start. As the Parks would be mostly closed I decided to have a go at trying to visit all the Odd (numerical) Postal District Codes in Dublin. Dublin 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15 and 17. There were some long stretches between Districts, and a couple of early errors that jeopardised the task within the session distance. But the post was delivered!!

Any early morning run around Dublin is always entertaining but none more than the 4 Tyrone Girls lying on their sleeping bags finishing their gargle on the 14 yard line of St. Vincents Senior Pitch. I ran past to cheers and encouragement and not for the first time this week. Nice.

Had my first gel of choice at 1 hr 50 mins and it hit within 6-7 minutes. Very effective and finished this run very strong. The last 8 km were very pleasant and I just let the pace ease along as the HR was holding well.

29 km LR 5:50/km and HR 141. Never felt better.

    Week 7/19 DCM
    Plan Kms 80
    Actual Kms 80.2

Yep, and to be fair to Younganne she was straight out of the traps on Strava to point that out :)

I thought that including the even number, I can't even say it, would upset the subset :D.

Intend to do at least one LR at a slightly later starting time so that the parks will be open.

    Week 8/19 DCM

Had an earlier write up finished and was timed out so this is a shortened version of same.

    Tuesday 8th August
    11.5km GA with 6x100m Strides, 5:19/km and HR 145

Felt good and pushed this run up into the faster end of my HR range. Feeling that I am losing speed so the strides are a nice pick up to salve concerns.

    Wednesday 9th August
19 KM MLR Run at 5:53/km and HR 138.

Ran a series of hills (Howth Road, Malahide Road, Grace Park Rd x2 and Swords Road) out from sea level to the rim of the city to replicate the DCM Hills. Had got the idea before and thought it would do not harm to have some more hills in my running for DCM. Was a hot morning but the hills were absolutely fine.

    Friday 11th August
17 KM with 10 kms at 15km Race Pace (4:40/km) HR 157 and overall pace 5:03/km

Ran to St. Annes Park and used the Park Run course again. 3 of the kms on Strava are markedly slower but think tree cover masked a more accurate picture of pace. Knew the effort was in this session and well pleased. That was 2kms further than LT last week and I finished in better condition. Did not need to sit down and catch breath and continued cooldown on the way home.

    Saturday 12th August
8km Recovery at 5:41/km. A little too fast.

Warm up to Fairview Park and bumped into a a neighbour and AQuinn. Very sociable run around the course until Aquinn barrelled off as we were about to be overtaken by a 6 year old.

    Sunday 13th August
32km LR Day at 5:56/km and HR 147

For a change I headed out at midday and it was warm. Headed around town in and out of any parks I could find. The streets around D 1 and town were full of Langers and Deise heading to Croker. See that Chancery Park has had a makeover. Check out the Art Deco patterns on the building lights and the beautiful script adorning same. A Gem. Will write up and list the parks in the Parks Thread but safe to say that MurphD provided the groundwork for today's run.

Run proved to be a lot harder than last week's 29 km run. Body was tired and the legs could feel the last 6 km although I picked up the pace with 3 to go and that seemed to sort that out.

    Week 8/19 DCM

    Plan kms 86
    Actual kms 87.9.

A tip for when you're writing up long posts, before you post it, copy it, that way if it gets lost in space you can just open a new reply box and paste it in again :)

Look forward to reading the 'parks' run detail although am very disappointed there was no D2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 etc etc :p. That's quite a weeks mileage you have there...

    Week 9/19 DCM

    Tuesday 15th August
11km Recovery Run. No stats as had forgotten to recharge the watch after previous LR and was away this week.

Got out early before breakfast for this run in Newcastle. Had a quick look at the map and targeted a series of Moors just out of town behind St. James Park, the home of Newcastle Football. Nice thing about a recovery run is that you can roam around and have a little more time and breath to take more than a passing interest in the world. Found the moors and followed several paths to get the best of the views of the city underneath. Beautiful quiet summer morning.

    Wednesday 16th August
23 Km MLR - No garmin battery= no data.

Had measured out a course along the Tyne River heading east towards Tynemouth. My target was Wallsend - where Hadrian's Wall, not suprisingly, ENDS!!! Idea was to then pick up on Hadrians Way on slightly higher ground and return to the river as it approached the city. Another beautiful morning and ended up running off route to find some water after 10kms. I chased after a ship, well actually a series of tugboats that were pulling/pushing an Oil Platform out to sea on a barge. The North Tyne still has plenty of sea related industry as a legacy of its early industrial prowess but there is a sadness to witnessing so many silent old buildings and quaysides. I met 2 lads fishing in the 11 kms outbound journey along the river. Not a popular place to walk/run.

Return journey was quick and had another "wildlife" moment. Saw a young woman ahead in what was a very secluded area as I was dropping off Hadrians Way back to the riverfront. She had spotted me and started looking behind. Only then, I noticed why?? She had a dog the size of a Pit Pony, leashed with a single leather mouth strap with a log in its mouth, which it was carrying. There was only about a metre and a half wide path so I slowed and checked with a feeble "mornin". I could feel that primeval stirring along my spine right up to the brain stem as every nerve tingled. The owner was on her hunkers soothing the dog and had both arms wrapped around him. I passed (but not out) and thanked her for holding the dog. Not sure what the outcome might have been if the dog had a mind that it was going to have a go.

Run ended well on a surge of adrenaline :)

We were in the North East hill walking and sight seeing along the Northumberland Coast so I managed to get in about 80 kms of hiking in over the 4 days we were there. Missed one 10kms GA run on Thursday. A small price to pay.

    Friday 18th August

Headed out late evening to do a 14km (5:31:km) GA run with last 3 kms at HMP. A new circuit brought me out to The Stardust Memorial in the appropriately named Stardust Memorial Park. I had never visited it before and it was one those evenings that I wanted to search out something.

    Saturday 19th August
Back on the hills again in Cavan/Fermanagh and finished with a 8km Recovery Run whilst everyone else changed and went for tea/coffee. Still managed to join them in time for refills.

Not an easy week or two and I have lost some of the mojo required. Just taking each session as it comes and fighting the slight disinterest. I have an extra week built in but would prefer not to take it right now. Frank Duffy 10 miler this weekend has arrived just in time methinks. Will run it hard but not full out.

    Sunday 20th August

Got out with very little sleep a little later than normal. As I am switching a few sessions to allow for the Frank Duffy Race next Saturday this would just be a 23 KM MLR type run.
Headed out along the coast and did a lap of St. Annes before heading back into town and home. I think I discovered today what the source of my lethargy was. The subconscious is a funny old world. Take time and try to tap into it. A run can do that sometimes.

    Onwards and upwards.

    Week 9/19
    Pland Kms 79
    Actual Kms 79.5
