The last three pages here are just hilarious incompetence. We need more of this nonsense on boards.

Never really tried to use Reddit. It did look confusing the few times I opened links to it, but I suppose that if I spent a few hours on it that would all sort itself out.

But not bothered enough about it to do that. There's a huge number of other fora on boards that are probably full of good stuff too, but I'm not bothered to check that out either.

I'm purely here for the talking shyte with anonymous fellow wafflers.

It's quite funny how many Irish people cant, seemingly, use the 8th most active website in the world http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/reddit.com

I wonder is it just people who got used to the BB forum style and can't adapt. Because Reddit ranks higher than Boards in Ireland stats on alexa

Definitely a case of older people just not getting it or really trying too.

I bet the average 20 and 25 year old Irish person couldn't give two fúcks about Boards but uses Reddit daily.

I'd say so, for better or worse. It's strange how you never see any of the common irish memes from reddit and facebook here on boards, the place is really out of touch :pac:

I think it's fair to say that some people simply prefer one over the other, based either on content, format, or both. Nothing wrong in either case so far as I'm concerned.

Nothing wrong at all of course, but it is interesting to probe the demographics

Agreed. My post was in response to some of the more heated bickering and name-calling in the thread, as if somehow something really important was at stake. I agree that the question and the answers are intellectually interesting.

But that's AH for you ...

There are good things about both. For niche interests I find reddit better, there's a far bigger userbase so you're more likely to end up talking to people who actually like and know about the topic rather than people who just saw it on the front page and clicked through. I'm very interested in film with a specialty in horror, and I like that I have r/movies (blockbustery, very casual conversation, not particularly moderated) r/truefilm (fairly in-depth conversation, world cinema, silent film etc, strictly moderated to keep the standard of discussion at a certain level) and r/flicks (split the difference) as well as r/horror.

There's an almost site-wide snippiness to boards as well tbh, apart from the moderation it's the one thing you see referenced about the site consistently. Think I read a characterisation somewhere that if someone posted a thread saying "I've fallen off a cliff, please help" nearly all the replies would be along the lines of "God I hate people who walk near cliffs" "You probably fell off it because you weren't careful enough" "What about the poor emergency services people who'll have to help you" "I hate Sinn Fein". There's the odd flash of hilarity on here but generally I find reddit far more craic.

For Irish focused discussion I find boards far better, reddit definitely skews American and there isn't anywhere like boards if you have like a legal question, you're looking for a good restaurant in Cork or a good hotel in Portlaoise or whatever.

The layout is massively off-putting on reddit in fairness but apart from that and the point above, boards is miles behind.

I like reddit for more or less the same reasons outlined so far, but does anyone else think that it's gotten increasingly toxic and hateful lately? No matter what the topic is, you don't have to scroll to far before it dissolves into insults and blatant trolling.

It's been noticeably worse since the US election imo. If you don't filter a dozen or so subs from r/all, it won't be too long before you're totally overrun by ****e from subs like r/The_Donald & r/EnoughTrumpSpam (which, despite the name, is the source of most of the fukin Trump spam). Lately it's been spilling over into the mainstream subs, making it harder to avoid.

Idk, it's summer, maybe all the edgy teenagers are bored...

People have considered Reddit as a toxic place for many years now.

Or maybe you should stay away from the dangerous interwebs.

I know a site that shows monkeys doing it.

I have really embraced Reddit now. Haven't really encountered any strange individuals on there so far compared to Boards. Women have left Boards in droves which is an issue that they have been sticking their head in the sand about. While I will be sad to see Boards go, I feel the site's demise is inevitable due to their own self-sabotaging behaviour.

I only went on it once to "research" what the fuss about the Fappening of 2014 was all about and havent been back since.

It's the Last Resort of the internet.

I don't understand the format of Reddit, so for now I'm happy sticking to boards.

Rumours of boards.ie's demise is greatly exaggerated. It's still in pretty rude health.

There's no denying the drop off of people posting here in the past year. The graph of active Boards users recently posted on another thread showed this quite well.

Guys in charge seem happy enough, they shut down feedback rather than read the complaining from long term users.

Am I right in saying the same company that runs boards also runs the journal.ie? That went beyond a joke when they got rid of red thumbing comments so now you can only leave positive thumbs!

    Many Reddit users seem pretentious.

If only you realised it was the exact opposite. I wake up every morning to conversations started days and weeks ago about stuff I'm interested in.

Do you actually get paid by Google to advertise Reddit? :)

Eugh, r/Ireland put up a Union Jack to commemorate The Twelfth. I know they like to bitch about Boards a lot but at least Boards never did anything like that.

For the record I'm not against the idea of marking the 12th, but something more appropriate could have been put up

You can't have a proper personal argument about something you haven't a breeze about on reddit.

You know, the ones you see all the time where they obviously have the Wikipedia page open in another window, and then the other guy ups the stakes by inventing a relative who is dying because of whatever they're discussing.

And then they both do chippy sorrynotsorry sign offs, but they're both trying to get the last word in so it goes on for ages.

You can't find entertainment like that on Reddit..

Reddit - I can say a certain music event organisation company is **** on there without getting into trouble.

Boards - good for Irish topics etc.
