Reddit or Boards?

I like both places for different reasons and both have their pros and cons. Reddit's system of letting the most upvoted (liked) posts rise to the top saves so much time and makes the old Boards way look ancient by comparison.

Yet, for an Irish view of things, I think Boards is still useful for certain things. Although it does feel like the forum needs to modernise things for the new way things are now discussed online.

My problem with Reddit is I go there and read a thread. But if I go back later and want to see what else has been added to the thread it's a pain following it

The upvote thing on Rediit is the exact reason I've never taken to it. I find it disruptive, I like to read the conversation in its natural flow. Plus, I don't even trust people to vote for Eurovision acts.

Reddit for a quick fix/the latest news.

Boards for in-depth, constructive and logical discussions on important topics and current events.

But it's much more aimed at today's busy lifestyles. Who really has time to wade through 40 pages of posts anymore when all you have time for is the good stuff?

I spent far more time on Reddit.

    "But Reddit is ugly!"

It's 2017. I browse Reddit in a beautiful app and I browse boards in desktop mode on my mobile with the same theme I've used for literally a decade.

I get abused here in general but not on Reddit.

Reddit isn't a real reflection of a natural conversation because of the upvote system. In face to face conversation you hear it all, even the irrelevant stuff that annoys you. Same here, it's not just what people are voting for, it's what they're actually saying.

I don't understand how Reddit works. It's not linear. It's just all over the place and I can't follow it.

Old style linear conversation is very 5-10 years ago.

It's all based on what other people have upvoted. As I said, I don't even trust the general public to vote for the Eurovision. I read and I form my own opinion.

You experience what Reddit is like everywhere, except on forum sites like boards.

Even your Facebook feed uses the Reddit model where you choose what threads to read. Same with newspapers.

Use both for different things. I like the more local vibe of this place but can't beat the range of topics on reddit!!

Basically the louder you shout and more populist you are for that particular topic the more you get noticed.

    Circle jerk basically.

You can view posts in a thread many ways on Reddit, not just "Best" and "Top". If you view by "Old" you will see posts in chronological order.

It's all very adjustable to what you want out of it.

I browse Reddit a decent bit now because its a site that has nice apps and is very forgiving of low/slow data connections (hint hint!)

But what your saying isn't really true when it comes to the comments, Reddit upvotes the funniest, quickest or alternatively the most authoritative sounding answer.

It doesn't matter if the answer may have glaring issues if you examine it properly it will get upvoted if it sounds right.
Saw a good example of this yesterday when somebody was talking about having already sunk 500 solo man hours into taking dry walling out of a house, that sounds right until you realize thats the equivalent of a five man team taking more than 12 working days (only done that sort of stuff casually but that seems far far to high considering how fast I've seen 2 guys strip places) maybe a builder here will correct me).

    Watch this..

I'm actually talking to you. Like me right now on my couch, talking directly to you. And you can reply.. And we can have a conversation about this topic for days and weeks and months.

Oh wait, no. Of course not. No one gives a toss about your post and no one will reply to you once this thread gets onto the next page. Your post is manure that feeds an ever growing thread of people not getting replied to.

People ignore or down vote what they don't like. Why should they decide what I may or may not like?

It just isn't like that. If you're into BMWs, toasters, or woodworking, you join the various subs. Each of the submissions get upvoted, as do the posts inside that. You're not getting people downvoting your model of calculator, you're getting people downvoting low quality submissions.

About 50% Americans. And it still looks the same.

The best thing to do is Google your interests along with Reddit in the search and join those subs. Anyone can create a sub so the best ones aren't obvious.

I hate boards for the fact that my posts are ignored 19 times out of 20 but on Reddit, I'm always talking to people.

Reddit for me, and if there is anything that I want the comment on I'll do it when the topic pops up on boards a day or two later.

Could never get into Reddit initially but using the app for the last 6 months or so makes it very user friendly.

Reddit is the best for information when all you want are the facts. Plus the likelihood is that wherever something is happening, a Redditor will be nearby giving up-to-the-second information. boards is better for conversation and community.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,102 ✭✭✭greencap

You can directly post pictures and videos here. I like that.

although you can't time stamp the videos to play at a given point. which makes me consider asking for my money back.

Reddit mainly as it's more current (usually something that was popular on reddit appears here about 2/3 days later) and less annoyingly rule bound and cliquey. Boards is just handy for the small amount of niche Irish forums I frequent like commuting & transport, broadband, work & jobs etc. Tis a pity such useful and informative forums are so hidden away by boards awful design/layout and landing page.

Plus Reddit didn't sell out to Gearbest either!

Boards has a much higher standard of irony, of which this claim, being that it’s posted in After Hours of all places, is a very fine example …

It depends what you want from either site I guess.

If you want to have a laugh and look at dank memes and **** then reddit wins. If you want to hear from people who most likely aren't irish, then reddit also wins.
If you want to talk about obscure arts, topics, sports etc. then reddit also wins as there's a subreddit for pretty much everything, whereas here at least 60% of forums are dead.

The thing is, I like boards in a way though. Yeah the modding can be ridiculous at the best of times, but there's some seriously funny **** to be read in AH, and I kinda like the quirkiness of the legacy site and bulletin board format. I find reddit is really americanised, whereas I feel posters here appeal more to my sense of humour than over there. You could say it's better in this regard, just because it's irish and used mostly by irish people.

Both sites are good though. I'd rather spend an hour on them than FB or other stupid sites.

Best thing about Reddit is the thread collapse, you know that annoying, never ending 'debate' two people get into that's just a load of goal post moving and fallacies? Well with Reddit two clicks and it's gone, no wading through pages of posts.

Like was said you can arrange posts chronologically if you wish to see everything, and downvoting doesn't make much difference on smaller threads since you can easily see everything.

I wonder if a lot of the people who don't like the format would change their minds if someone gave them a quick tutorial in it?

My problem with it is r/ireland is too small and doesn't have anywhere near as good a range of topics as here, and it's mainly irish views and humour I'm looking for. But as certain forums on boards get quieter you have to go to the international reddits to find people to discuss with

I wonder if a lot of the people who don't like the format would change their minds if someone gave them a quick tutorial in it?

    Definitely.

Without some time at it, people assume that you can only see the "best" posts.. It isn't obvious that it's the most upvoted post and it's most upvoted children, which are all collapsible.

To anyone who maybe doubts their understanding of Reddit, try this AskReddit thread to see how it works. (And it's interesting)

What common misconception do you hate to hear repeated as fact?

There's a little [-] next to each post that collapses threads. Really, there are hundreds of small conversations in there instead of one big one. The first is about Wikipedia, the second is about Einstein, the third is about blood.

You have a misunderstanding of Reddit if you say that boards.ie is more logical and coherent. There are over 5,000 posts in that page and you can find easily find the ones that interest you. And if you reply to someone, it doesn't get lost. They will likely get back to you or someone else will respond.

On boards, I have to go into my profile and see if I've been quoted. I don't even bother anymore because it's effort. On reddit, you get a message so you don't miss replies.

And fwiw, a lot of people complain about facebook here, but there are some great, very funny groups on it, Pintman postings, ireland simpsons fans..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,716 ✭✭✭✭Earthhorse

People say you can't have a conversation on Reddit and that's really not true, particularly in the smaller, specialist subs. I also like the fact that conversations on Reddit can be short lived rather than the endless back and forths you can endure on boards. There are some posters here that you know exactly what they're going to say every time they post. Reddit is far more varied and fresh.

If Boards had the moderation of /r/Ireland, or if Reddit threaded posts chronologically by last post the way Boards does (or had an option to do so), that'd be the perfect Irish forum in my view. The problem with Reddit is that its sorting system means that all threads tend to have an expiration date of only a few days, so long running threads like we have on Boards would be impossible. On the other hand, Boards' moderation is... Well, yeah. :D

Me too. Even when some threads on boards start off with misinformation in the first few replies, by page 2 it usually settles down and you actually learn something along the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭Darkglasses

Reddit gets the nod, for the far bigger range of discussion topics available and much higher number of users on even very obscure topics. Boards feels very quiet outside the main fora.

The upvote comment style isn't a bad thing at all for me. As mentioned above, you can instantly hide an iritating back-and-forth conversation which frequently dominates a thread on boards. Boards feels pretty old-fashioned too. Take for example the enormous amount of account settings/control panels when you are looking to change something in your profile.

I've been using Boards for a number of years now. There are pros and cons. I find the flow of conversation can be somewhat repetitive but I suppose that's to be expected.

I've never used Reddit, might take a proper look at it having read some of the replies here.

Well worth having a proper look at reddit. There are some great subreddits on there and once you get the hang of the site you'll end up spending hours on there.

If you have an opinion on reddit that is not pro-SF, expect to heavily downvoted. Most users on reddit see SF has wholesome individuals and SF has a spotless past. Whereas FG was set up to be fascists. Who cares if SF has strong connections to a terrorist organisation who were active very recently. But FG being set up as fascists 70 years ago is entirely unacceptable...
