There was a big spoiler on the official Facebook page the other day, I was so annoyed.

Edit: actually I misread it and it was about the radio shows.

I always stop it before the trailers. I also unsubscribed from their Facebook page for avoid spoilers.
Still picked up things I didn't want from elsewhere. This show is by far the worst for spoilers. Is it a British thing?

Can't speak for other British TV shows, the only other UK TV 'sensations' I can think of would be Broadchurch, Downton Abby and Top Gear, so it's hard to think of a trend. I think Broadchurch gained a bit of social media chatter over spoilers and reveals...

I'd say it's more a marketing decision taken by the BBC, and I suppose playing devil's advocate, we're talking about a mainstay of mainstream TV that's in its 10th season; there's always a risk the show has just become part of the furniture, so perhaps the over-eagerness to share every morsel of surprise could be down to maintaining a constant presence in social media, the zeitgeist or however you want to call it.

Of course the flip-side of that is actual honest-to-goodness surprises would get a lot of traction after the fact; the various reviews, tweets and FB posts would drive plenty of traffic back toward the streaming services. The BBC however feel the greater reward is gained in the build up.

Are any of you guys fans of Pro Wrestling?

There's an old saying in it: There is no such thing as a good surprise.

If something is good enough to be a good surprise for the viewers, it'll mean extra views/ buys if you promote it, too.

If you're placing immediate reward over long term strategy, it makes more sense to not keep a secret. This is also the reason movie trailers show everything these days, surprises don't sell short term (they do long term when people are all "hey have you not seen Cabin in the Woods? See Cabin in the Woods. No I can't tell you why. JUST SEE CABIN IN THE WOODS!")

    Great film.

    Great film.

The trailers for it made me avoid it for ages, and no one would tell me why it as so good. So I decided to watch so I could definitively say, it is sh1t. For the first 20 minutes I was right, and then, so quickly, I was so wrong.

This said Dr. Who already has a fan base, it does not need this. I would be of the opinion that unless a previous episode tanked, they are going to get the same viewership regardless. Why not reward them so that they go out and say, watch this to those who have slipped away.

I am a fan of pro wrestling, though sometimes I find myself asking why :pac:

I do get what you mean though, you really do see it all the time in WWE.

All we need now is to have an announcer come out and introduce the actor playing the new Doctor before he regenerates, then it'll be really like WWE.
Though why have the spoilers in the trailers at the end of the episode showing something that only people who watch the series would get. Since, first, if we're watching the episode, then we obviously want to be watching the episode and, secondly, if the spoiler is in reference to something from a previous episode, then only we would get it anyway. So they're posting spoilers only fans would really get in order to lure in the people who already watch the show?

Maybe the entire point is to generate discussion like this then? I dunno it just seems like a weird strategy.

Yeah but imagine if they adopted that approach for something like Game of Thrones. Tell you in advance about a major character death just so it won't come as big if a shock for you.
And doing a regeneration in the series finale is the same as having a special show or announcing it in some way. Except it has the surprise element as well. Then the people can use the time between seasons to discuss what you said.

I would love if they done it like Spooks and out of nowhere, it just happened, no build up. Imagine if Missy just pushed him out the door of the Tardis, smiled and said, guess I can't change. Viewers would be there wondering what is going to happen, how is he going to get out of it and then boom, new doctor.

Never happen, with the family friendly show that it is. And there would be uproar but I would love it.

    I agree,

Should stop this change doctor every three seasons or so.

I do quite well to keep away from spoilers on social media so if the time comes that the next doctor is announced before the episode airs, at least spoiler tag it.

Also if anyone creates a new thread titled "(whoever) to replace Peter capaldi as the next doctor", they're a special degree of c^nt.

Some of us still like to be surprised.

I agree but what I dislike is any entertainment website, like IGN, just puts these kinds of spoilers in their headlines.

One of the great Doctor Who endings.

Amazing episode. One of the best in years, and an amazing way of
relaunching the Cybermen. It harked back to the 60s in a very very good way
. I loved Bill and Missy in this too.

The only thing is...could have it been better if they didn't reveal the return of
the Mondasian Cybermen and John Simm
    beforehand?

Although it's not explicitly in the charter of this forum, it is in the general TV variant: that discussion how to circumvent geographical restrictions on streaming channels is not allowed. I'd ask that you guys do not discuss this.

It's repeated late night with a sign language interpreter later in the week. Check listings alternatively find a way to get to Northern Ireland with your laptop or tablet and watch it there.

    This too shall pass.

That was bloody delicious, and could quite possibly become my favourite episode of Nu-Who; certainly near the top of the list anyway...

Which is why I didn't answer

So, few thoughts. I really enjoyed that episode, it felt really well put together and I hope the second part follows through on that and we don't wind up with a limp ending.
I'd forgotten how creepy the Mondasian Cybermen voice was, gave them a certain charm. I do wish the Simm Master didn't have the bit of a beard, it feels a bit "stereotypical evil villain", but I still loved his incarnation so I'm happy he's back, even if it is just for one story.

I'm going to wait to see how that set-up pays off before I give my full verdict, especially given how The Monks turned out.

I'm not a fan of the current trope of starting your episode at the end and then flashing back, it's been overused in recent years and I feel if you're going to do it, you need to get to that ending in the same episode. This episode technically did it twice and it felt unnecessary on both occasions.

I've never seen Classic Who, so the revival of the Mondassian Cybermen means nothing to me but I can appreciate how it felt to others. Frankly though, I'm struggling to understand why they're creating them and why the 50 crew who went down never returned and just decided to set up a civilisation, as I said I'm going to wait to see how it addresses all the issues it set-up.

Re the Master, good to see him back. Curious to learn how, when and why he arrived on the ship. Something I've been wondering actually is how The Master does get around in general given that he/she doesn't have a TARDIS. It's probably something we're not supposed to ask.

    BBC2 @ 2:05 am next Saturday morning.

Even if you went up north, you would still need to use details from a UK TV license in order to login to the iPlayer.
