Yeah, I agree the tapas places here are not entirely authentic. The whole idea is you have two, then if you want another one or two you'd just go and grab them off the counter, or order while getting a drink.

But a flight to Spain for a meal is a bit beyond my budget for a Father's Day treat ;)
The tapas in The Parlour Cafe is a bit more substantial than your regular tapas..

I don't think Irish people 'get' tapas.

The part I struggle with is paying for them ;)

Chilli Gobi on special in Iyer's today.
    It's like crack.
This is possibly my favorite food ever and I don't really like cauliflower!

There's KBS on tap in the bierhaus, or was.

Just in case you're considering a light desert :pac:

That donut place Cream has opened another store, this one on OP. Wouldn't recommend their donuts, but they do have icecream as well!

Had a very nice burger in 14A (French Church Street). My dining partner gave the steak sandwich the thumbs up. They have a 3 course /€20 menu in the evenings.

    Republic in Ballincollig

Very enjoyable evening recently. A nice venue, plenty of space and light.

    Friendly and helpful staff.

The food was good all round. Menu is straight forward but couldn't complain about what we got.

Unfortunately Republic has closed! It's only open since November. Despite seeming to be busy, the entire place - including JDs bar is gone. I parked outside on Thursday and it was open. At 6am Friday they were removing furniture!

That's a strange one! So the old Sam's bar place is gone too? And they were about to open a Cafe on the corner...

While meaning to try it I never made it down to republic.

Reports I heard back was fairly over priced for very average food.

It's one of my pet hates about Cork, businesses seem to come and go constantly.

Apparently there's a new Indian coming to main st, hopefully it lasts longer than the last few that have opened

Ya, the entire place is gone. Apparently it was news to the staff when they turned up for work on Friday. They opened the cafe section around 3 weeks ago!

Went to the Montenotte Hotel for fathers day meal yesterday. What an absolutely stunning hotel! The gardens and view at the back have to be seen to be believed, and with the weather yesterday it just made it all the more breathtaking - they have really put an awful lot of money into it.

The food was very tasty too, if maybe a bit pricy. I had the salmon and it was lovely. Everyone else with me seemed to be happy with theirs and my sister-in-law had the burger and she said she thought it was possibly the nicest burger she's had in Cork.

All in all, a really stunning hotel, can't wait to go back and try it for Sunday lunch (during the day) or brunch.

That was such a great restaurant when it was at its height. Really inventive and fun stuff as well e.g. I vividly remember a chocolate cr?me brulee that was in a pyramid shape. It was michelin level stuff.

A little off the beaten track, unfortunately.

Plenty of people with money living nearby, though.

 Maybe they didn't want pub grub.

Been to Spitjack twice over the last few weeks. First time I had a sandwich and was a little disappointed as I thought it really could have used a bit more meat, having just a single slice in there. Otherwise good sandwich and fries, the juice was outrageously pricey though - over €6 for a whiskey tumbler sized glass of some healthy green stuff! :o

Went again yesterday, skipped the juice and bread and had a porchetta lunch plate - meat with a side and sauce of my choice. The meat was amazing, 2 big juicy slices that came with crispy crackling and the red wine jus was awesome too. About €15, so I'd say average price wise.

I went the other day, and found that while it was definitely enough food in the porchetta (I couldn't finish it!), and it was tasty and the fries were great, it certainly wasn't like the kind of thing I've had in Italy before! One slice of pork was a bit flimsy.

My compadre had a burger, which was good, but a little on the steep side, considering Liberty Grill are doing a really good burger two doors down for €4 less.

The decor was gorgeous, I really like the actual restaurant. Staff were friendly, and the bar manager actually came down for a chat, having recognised us from another restaurant :) I'd try it again for sure, and go for another dish on the menu.

Went to Bunsen tonight and loved it! I'm very picky about my burgers (I hate big fat burgers that don't fit in my mouth) so I rarely get one when I eat out. Bunsen's cheeseburger was super tasty though and I can't wait to go back.

Had dinner in Isaac's last week and also really enjoyed it. I had the fish cakes and they were really good. My companion got the steak and said it was one of the best she'd had in a while.

Was at a BBQ for a club I am in in The Elm Tree last night... fantastic place.. had not been before.. but we were so lucky with the weather - it really was great in the sunshine..

The food was v good - but... and this is the but... it wasn't actually "BBQ'd"??? Like they had the BBQ set up - they lit it - brought out the food cooked - put it on the BBQ just before serving (the food was fully cooked before going on BBQ) ...

So, the food was good - but not actually BBQ'd - so didn't have that lovely aroma/flavour.. shame as thats what i was looking forward to; neighbours were having a BBQ before we left - was teased with the lovely smell - and looking forward to the event.. but nope.. not a sniff of BBQ..

Is this normal practice for event held BBQ's?

There were over 70 of us... a big gang i know.. and with salads, potatoes etc - twas €16.99 pp..

I still had a fantastic eve but just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this?

I'd say that would be pretty common. It would be very difficult to actually properly BBQ food for that many people quickly. I've been to BBQ's that had never even seen a BBQ.

With food safety and the logistics, I'd say it would be usual, as well. 10/15 is enough to cater for that way. Also the kitchen staff would not be au fait with BBQ cooking.
    Best to be safe.

well you would imagine it they advertise bbq's that they would know how to bbq.. we had one in Bunnyconnellans and i am sure it was actually bbq'd

hear ye on the food safety thing though... that might be a factor
