Thread for those with FTTH connections

    Kick off with this one.

Not really impressed on a 1Gb connection on the Curragh exchange - contention maybe ? Can hit 700+ during the day

    15MB

A measly 120Mb. Not impressive indeed.

64:1 seems aggressive to me but yours wont be even half way full by now so its from the OLT back. If their core hasnt got the capacity for the rakes of new gig subs going live every day it'll be a rather large facepalm.

    Still getting the same speeds.

Also, had my first "Hey, where did the 2.4GHz wifi go?" with the F2000.
    Just plain disappeared.

Restarted it through the router admin GUI and it came back OK

I'm sure you know all this but have you tried connecting directly to the router with a short, known good quality ethernet cable? It's just you have mentioned previously about multiple switches and poor quality Cat6 cable.

Also what are the specs of the machine that you are testing on? Is it known cable of gigabit speeds ie do you get near gigabit transfers over your internal LAN?

After router reboot, on an i7 8GB/ RAM/ SSD using Windows Speedtest app.
Will use this setup for tests from now on.

    Test Date: May 11, 2017 7:07
    Download: 865.04 Mbps
    Upload: 95.20 Mbps
    Ping: 5 ms
    Connection Type: Ethernet
    Server: Carlow

    Downgrading update

Rang a week ago to downgrade from 1Gb to 300 Mb. Was told to ring back on 11th

Rang back, nothing had been done in it but CS rep put it through. She mentioned a €50 downgrade fee which she said she'd waive. Should take 24/48 hours to go through.

I was pretty sure I read that you can downgrade from 1Gb package for free (the free bit was specifically and only for 1Gb package) within the first 14 days so unsure where this €50 came from.

no issues here with contention or speeds. Long_b I'm wondering is it the cables/length of cables/network cards that's causing you to not hit your 1gig speeds? Have you tried using the speedtest windows 10 app instead of the browser?

I doubt there is contention anywhere yet especially in newly launched exchanges. Also very few customers are going for the 1gig, my neighbours got theirs recently and the KN guy said they were the first in the exchange to order the gig, that everyone is on either 150 or 300.

The only issue I have is the F2000 with it's really crappy wifi. Going to take a serious look into getting a wifi router/hub over the next few weeks.

Downgrade has been applied to my account.

    5 ms ping

    287 Down
    47 Up

    Happy with that

Hey guys, i'm getting my FTTH installed in a few weeks (went for the 1gb package). Just wondering how flexible they are about where they install it. Ideally would like the router where the xbox/smart tv, but was thinking maybe if they drilled a hole or 2 I could just use a switch in that room if I got a long enough cable. Will 5e do the trick or should I get cat 6e cables

They are only allowed to bring fiber 1m inside premises, not allowed to enter through attic and need power where the fiber will terminate for the media converter. 5e will be fine for 1Gb.

    Had this installed on Monday!

Just had my ftth reconnected(it was installed for previous tenants), 150mb package but only getting 20-30mb on speedtest(that's over wifi), does it need a few hours to 'warm up' as such? Lol
Even at those speeds it's still much improved on the 12mb we had before.

Also he recommended a wifi repeater to boost our signal as it's a large house, any thoughts? Or would a decent modem be a better idea?

Don't use a repeater, that will half your throughput. He obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

You need to connect to 5ghz, with a device that supports 5ghz. You can properly test your connection by plugging in a laptop, you cannot test over Wi-Fi as there are too many variables.

Yeah my laptop on supports 2.4, and the devices that support 5ghz are only iPad/iPhone so I can't connect them directly to the modem.

Im assuming that it's definitely ftth he's connected and not fttc.
I'll contact Eir if the speed doesn't improve, because we should be getting over 100mb right?

Wired directly in with a Cat5e or better cable you should be getting 140ish alright. Assuming the pc has Gigabit Ethernet port (really old ones may not)

I wouldn't contact Eir until you have established there is actually a problem. What speed does the iPad get using the speedtest app? Borrow a modern laptop with a gigabit Ethernet port and test with a cable plugged into the router

Just retested on the iPhone speed test app while connected to the 5ghz, got over 120mb!!
Just need to buy a new laptop that supports 5ghz now! Lol

you'd be surprised how few modern devices support 5g. My phone is relatively new and does not have 5g, either does my computer and its only 14 months old.

Yeah and the speed difference is quite dramatic between the 2.4 and 5ghz, 30mb compared to 120-140mb.

Ahhh dont be calling it 5G, will confuse everything. 5Ghz and 5G are very different terms.

What handset is it? Pretty much all non budget have dual band, S6 on, 5S on, all the nexus devices. Its part of Qualcomms platform so everything has the support once they pay a few dollars.

    It's a Huawei P9 Lite http://www.techradar.com/reviews/huawei-p9-lite

I would have seen this as a mid range phone, surprised that it has no 5Ghz support.

Its a HiSilicon unit, not Qualcomm or MTK. Huawei building their own chips. Seems like its missing on most of their range.

Yes Ed E you're right - I bought a nexus 9 a number of years ago when it came out - must be about 3 years old and I remember I was trying to decide on it or an ipad - iirc the ipad had 5ghz wifi also, but I wanted an android tablet with 5ghz so i could stream HD movies comfortably from a home server, was really annoyed when they hadn't actually bothered to write drivers for the 5ghz so it was working off of N for a year or more. So it's been around a while I suppose.

I'm quite concerned about the placing of this FTTH cable, I'm thinking of various family and friends who won't care enough to suddenly have that equipment lumped into other rooms, when the master socket is in the middle of the house and is supplied with an attic-fed cable.

Surely if the householder is happy to actually drag the cable through the attic, the installer won't mind where it's eventually installed?

They will, as they're responsible for the entire thing up to the optical termination. Not about install alone but future faults calls.

That's gonna be a deal breaker for quite a few people, including my family I suspect :(

Can join this thread now,got FTTH installed today:cool:

All seems flawless so far bar a android box that I have connected via cat5 its getting about half the speed of any of the other wired connections.

How much of a loss is there by using wifi rather than wired connections? I don't think i'll be able to have the router where i'd ideally like it so will probably be using wireless connections for xbox/smart tv. Would it be worth buying powerline adapters?

Definitely would be better using something other than wireless however homeplugs won't give you anywhere near the speed of a cable but keeps your wireless for the devices that need mobility. The speed of your wireless is shared between all the devices that are connected
