This fight will give McGregor a good insight into how MMA fighters felt going up against him.

Mayweather's accuracy with shots from angles he hasn't had to deal with will be the key. He'll be getting hit by shots he didn't know were coming similar to the comments Alvarez made after their fight.

I can't really see an option for McGregor aside from swinging for the fences and if that doesn't work taking the inevitable beating.

Against a boxer in 10oz padded gloves, the padding from the gloves would have landed on Conor's nose, making the counter a lot more difficult. So that's a big adjustment he has to try make.
Against a boxer a 3" longer reach than Eddie, much more than the padding would have landed.

You allow for an opponents reach not his gloves. Conor's UFC opponents have had a much greater range of reaches than the difference between 4oz and 10oz gloves.

    Block shots with his face

Plenty of boxers over the years have been willing to take two to give one.

That might not be a choice for Conor if he's as hopelessly outclassed as you say, then he's going to have to eat a lot of shots to try get in range to hit Floyd.

Valid point . I'm sure many others have tried .

Is there a part of you that thinks conor doesn't really care about this fight ?

The fact he will have artem as a sparring partner ? Jk in his corner ?

Does part of you not think this a joke to con the public and make a lot of money for everyone involved ?

Ar-tem is Conor's favourite punch bag that moves, no chance he'd be left out this camp.

Anyone know if his reebok deal will be enforced? he will have other massive sponsors on his shorts this time too no doubt.

    Jk in his corner ?
Kavanagh seems very smug and a know-it-all but if we look at the SBG guys who had little/no striking prior to joining the camp...none of them developed good striking under his watch.

Conor learned to strike - or at least the fundamentals - in Crumlin. Gunnar was Icelandic Karate champion.

Guys like Pendred, Holohan, even the younger breed like Tuke. They learned to strike with Kavanagh as head coach and for me they all have very poor striking. Just the way they move, they way they close distance, distribute their weight. They look like a bunch of drunks.

Having JK involved in any capacity for a boxing match against Mayweather makes no sense to me.

While I kind of agree I dont think Kavanagh has ever claimed to be a striking expert or taken credit for Conor's boxing, he is a good head coach as he oversee's everything and keeps them in line, not to mention his bjj credentials are legit (although paying Danis for Diaz rematch was a bit weird),

I would say it was a stroke of genius to get Pendred into the UFC and retire with a winning record there too, Freddie Roach couldnt help him strike if were honest, Tuke is an ok striker just over confident like many of the gym's fighters.

Again, while this might be hard to believe for many, I think Conor genuinely believes he will stop Floyd.

I don't see the "con the public" argument. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy the fight.

I think the night of the fight will have a very Italia '90 type feel to it. Pubs jammed, clubs jammed, house parties up and down the country.

If that's not people's idea of a good night then they're free to give it a miss :)

    I think you're right.

He posted a pic the other day of sparring against SBG's Frans Mlambo, who is much more a kickboxer and muay thai type of fighter, basically the only thing Frans has in common with Floyd is they're both black.

He looks, so far, to be keeping it to guys he knows and trusts. Which is probably a smart strategy given what happened with Rory MacDonald in the run-up to UFC 189. The last thing Conor needs is to get injured or KO'd in sparring by a boxer with an ego coming in looking to 'prove a point'.

Must be a tough gig vetting potential training/sparring partners.

Wrong there Wonder Frans was on the boxing scene in Dublin nearly 10 years ago when I was still boxing I've seen him spar all ireland winning champions and give them fits excellent boxer whose religion and not wanting to hurt opponents has stopped him becoming an mma star.

Conor signed a separate 3-year deal with Reebok on the monday before the Siver fight, so that's January 12th, 2015. So 7 months left on that if those news reports were accurate.

I don't know how that applies here but I can't imagine he's wearing anything other than Reebok boxing shoes at the least.

Put it this way, there's not a hope of Nike or Adidas being involved anywhere near this thing.

True even the gym is kitted out in Reebok I wonder if the contracts states he has to wear it during any combat fight? presume it does, Reebok and Adidas are the same company though arent they so no difference to them Nike was with Manny before not sure they've even been into Mayweather,

Underarmour might get on the Floyd train seen as they signed his protege Gervonta Davis recently, expect the both to have massive sponsors for the whole fight week from Rolls Royce to Hublot.

Yeah I was seeing from his social media he's a Muslim alright.

Cool, didn't know that. He's very kick-heavy in his fights, never knew he had a good boxing background. Mind you, he did level Darren O' Gorman with a peach of a right hand.

I'm not sure a lot of boxers would be too willing. In general this fight is not going down too well in the Boxing community.

No love lost between him and SBG / McGregor (because of comments he made about mma) but McGuigan is on record as saying if Conor reached out to him he would be happy to help him prepare for the fight (or any boxing fight).

Was around six months or so ago........

Crazy that he fought in Vegas in the sweltering sun. Can remember the whole family watching that fight..... which sadly he lost.

Can remember also that almost all my mates had either a Barry McGuigan t-shirts or sweatshirts. Popular and all as McGregor is now, it's nothing close to the level of support and excitement that was in country back when McGuigan was at the top of is game.

Shame they couldn't put their differences aside as I think his experience would help immeasurably.

McGuigan only cares for the dough he wouldnt be offering for any other reason, and Conor knows this.

McGuigan is a snake staying well away from him is wise, always found him a two faced duplicitous rodent.

My understanding is that Conor's Reebok deal is entirely separate to the UFC kit deal. Same way as GSP is sponsored by Under Armour. It applies to his whole public image. Besides fight night, he probably shouldn't be seen on social media wearing other sports brands.

He'll be wearing reebok boots on the night. But because it's not a UFC fight. I guess he won't be tied to their uniform. He'll be free to collect $1mil per sponsor who wants to put their logo on his shorts or walk out ensemble.

May aswell make it a complete ****show tell Floyd he has 6 rounds to finish him or it becomes an mma fight rounds 6-12... would guarantee action.

    Doubts swirling about the venue.

Ice Cube has already booked T-Mobile for August 26th and is playing hardball apparently. "Refusing" to change his date i.e. code for "pay me".

Was it not booked for basket ball?

Yeah Ice Cube's basketball league but they're still refusing to give it up (so far).

Not all Muslims practise the Islamic religion, either...

Frans is a Christian. Trust me, we've had many conversations about the bible.
His base is boxing, that's where he comes from. And sorry, but him not wanting to hurt people and his religion have NOT stopped him from becoming an "MMA star". He's got a long career ahead of him yet.

Jesus Loves knockouts :) Ask Holly Holm...

I wasn't the one who said anything stopped him becoming a star, he's only in his mid-20's.

What's your opinion on the fight then Richy? Do you believe Conor can/will win?

    Wait...which fight? There's a fight coming up?

Sorry, wonderfullife, I don't really follow the news.

You should give that jiujitsu a rest and spend more time on your phone :)

No, seriously, give us some thoughts on the fight... Do you fancy Conor to get the job done?

Some lad from Crumlin with a fairly meh amateur record and no pro fights blagged an exhibition fight with Mayweather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 963 ✭✭✭Richy06

    Right, I see!

Mayweather's Da, surely though, if he's blagged it with no profile or record to speak of?

I think the fans will be the REAL winners here....oh, sorry, I meant the bank balances of those involved!

That's about as much insight as I can provide, chaps. I'm a grappler, not a puncher.

Now, ask me my thoughts on Omega Vs Okada II and I'll wax lyrical...

You'll get splinters from that fence sitting

Many on this forum believe Conor v Floyd will be similar to NJPW anyway :pac:
