I think I remember that but wouldn't call it a spat at all. Wolly asked Hunter something on Twitter, not any abuse or controversy, and Hunter blocked him and said he didn't have time for this or something.

Yeah, spat wasn't really the word for it, it was very much one-sided...Hunter being a complete dickhead.

I taught McIntyre was very good in the hot seat, very professional, sticks to the sport, knows it's not all about him. He has good knowledge of the main sports.Comes across as a lad who enjoys his job. And unlike Ger and Joe knows it's not all about him.

i think it was last Weds or Thursday when they said that it was the first time in ages that they managed to get through all the sportsnews before 7.30. they usually get sidetracked with Joe talking about how good he looks or something.

I dont think we can blame anybody for not being able to get on with that arrogant, obnoxious name dropper. I don't understand how the others actually still indulge him.

one of the dumbest and funniest things i remember was on the night Johann Cruyff died. he was talking to Joe and seemed to be on the verge of tears talking about him. Joe asked if he had ever met him and he said No. he had been talking about him like he was a family member

Has Ger taking to the bed? Hasn't been on for the past week. Martin O Neill must have gotten under his skin.
Sometimes I think Ger sees himself as a modern day David Frost grilling political giants and been lauded by fellow hacks.

There was a bit more to it than that. Hunter followed up with something along the lines of:
'What would you know about football? I don't really care what you think you pleb, so I'm just going to ignore you'.
He was then informed that they'd been on the radio together numerous times.

I'd love if they called him out on it some evening, it would be amazing radio!

edit: I see you can get the rest of the conversation by clicking the tweet, I thought it might have been deleted.

Hunter is a bully, and wont be involved in any conversation where he is not the dominant and most respected contributor. He is the complete opposite of Pat Nevin, who is self deprecating, good humoured and at least has some sense of other people. If I could only understand what he was saying.

I wouldn't be near as critical of the show as some on here, I like it and I genuinely like all the presenters though like anyone they aren't perfect.

But God I really can't stand that Graham Hunter, such an arrogant tosser. Constantly on about all the great players and managers he knows personally and I also hate the faux Spanish way he pronounces everything. "Atleti" being a particular bug bear.

His biggest flaw though is just the way he feels as if he has a superior insight than everyone else in the world into the game of football, he goes on as if the game itself is some kind of ridiculously complicated algorithim that only he is able to fully appreciate and understand. This arrogance comes across in virtually everything he says.

Another significant difference is that Pat Nevin actually played football.

I'm only mentioning this because the idea of Hunter blocking someone in a "what do you know about football" style strop is just...

I presume he's still the same, I actually stopped listening to him was back when Eoin & Ken were on the show.

His was the only section in the whole week i'd turn off. And that includes Don McLean, and I have literally never put a euro on a bleedin horse race.

Used to enjoy this. Maybe it's just on too much but it's just inane when news is scarce.

Hunter can speak Spanish perfectly and I do not know what faux Spanish is.

In Spanish the second last syllable in a word is stressed, unless there is an accent on another letter. So Atlético stresses the E and Atleti also stresses the E. Hunter has been in Spain for a long number of years, so I doubt he would make an error, but I have not heard his pronunciation.

And saying Atleti is the equivalent of saying Barca or United so nobody should have a problem with that.

When non-native speakers of a language use the accent of that language when they speak English it is probably one of the most annoying things on the face of this earth. It's as if they are screaming from the rooftops that they can speak a foreign language and you can't. This fits perfectly with the personality of Hunter. On that, there is a contributor on Sky News who obviously has a little bit of French. When she says 'Macron', she doesn't do so phonetically like you or I would, but with the gyrations of a French accent because she can speak fluent French and don't you forget it.

I can think of loads of things which would probably me annoy me more. I can speak Spanish so I don't know why you assume the whole audience is monolingual.

"Atleti" being a particular bug bear.

That really annoys me as well. I wouldn't mind if it was just a nickname, but it's almost like he uses the nickname to show everybody that he is an insider and close to everybody in the club.

I really wish that Ger would challenge him a bit more and stop accepting his word as gospel. I think Ger is actually afraid of him to be honest.

That's exactly it. He's showing off how he can fluently speak Spanish and pronounce everything perfectly.

He's speaking English and is a native English speaker so in that situation he should pronounce the players names and team names as an English speaker would.

When he's in Spain hosting one of his parties that he has invited Messi and all of his other good friends to and is speaking Spanish then I would have no issue with "Atleti" and all his other nonsense.

There was one time he was on and Joe asked him about the differences between Atleti and Atletico etc. In Spain, they refer to Atletico Madrid as Atleti, not sure you can really blame Graham Hunter for using Atleti when he lives in Spain and uses that term all the time.

I still think Hunter is an arrogant ass but I wouldn't really blame him for using Atleti

That's great news that you speak Spanish but it's an Irish radio programme, I really don't think they work off the assumption that a significant portion of their audience can speak Spanish.

was it about Athletic Bilbao, and how they use the english spelling as opposed to the spanish spelling?

Hunter is an abomination. I listened to the first 2 minutes of one of his podcasts a while back. He uttered the word "simples" and that was it for me. Unsubscribed.
Just look at his photo on his twitter handle... the dark shades, the pose. If he was an ice-cream he'd lick himself, no doubt.

Possibly, I can't fully remember but they did mention a few different teams

    Does anyone like Hunter?

A couple of his podcasts are very good but I just had to give up on them as he was so hard to listen to.

Didn't mind him as much when I first started listening to him as he does have good insight and knowledge but the more I listened to him, the more obnoxious he came across. Constantly name dropping and came across like his word was gospel. Didn't help that he got his own intro music on Off The Ball, as if his ego wasn't big enough . Also, Joe and Ger seem to idolise him

Pity Tim Vickery doesn't move to Spain, he is superb compared to Hunter

Many people would be familiar with the names of Spanish clubs being pronounced in Spanish by English speakers e.g. Sevilla ("ll" is a separate letter in the Spanish alphabet). And English speakers do not say Reel Madrid or Royal Madrid, they use the Spanish pronunciation of Real.

Tbh honest I always cringe when I hear Brits or Irish say Atleti.

My personal favorite has always been:

    'De-porrrrr-tiiiii-voooo la co-ruin-yaaah'

    (Deportivo La Coruña)

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Or pen for penalty. I mean was the word really that long that it needed an abbreviation.

He has signed off a couple of his podcasts saying "love you". First time he did I actually had to go back and listen as I thought there was no way even he would be so ridiculous.

But sure enough he does it regular.

    (Shudder)

Other shocking ones are Barca, PSV, Man U, Inter and PSG. It's almost as if these showoffs somehow think their arrogant shorthand should mean something to ordinary people.
