I was going to mention that, but the background reasoning is that Kilbane has a daughter who has downs syndrome, so he is hyper-sensitive over any insults implying mental impairment.

I found it a little bit amusing because Kilbane uses the word idiot/moron in casual conversation a a lot.

Years ago there used to be legislation called Idiots Act 1886 which made the distinction between 'Idiots, imbeciles and lunatics'

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiots_Act_1886

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

It is when the opinion is a very safe one and unlikely to offend anybody. Who would disagree with him? The other two are the same, all forceful opinions on safe topics like drugs in sport which get them journalism brownie points and very few opposing views. For example if I said "that convicted murderer is a ****ing horrible disgusting deplorable man" who would argue against me? The example is extreme but the point stands.

Yeah that it's. it actually has nothing to do with sport. Same as when the Spurs supporters were singing that song about "Harry Kane looking like a mong", and he got very upset over that. I mean is that honestly the worst he has ever heard sung about anybody in his ~20 years playing football?

He's seems to take offense on behalf of his daughter very easily. What David Haye calling Tony Bellew a retard has to do with his daughter is beyond me. But then I guess as soon as you join Newstalk you are given training on how to take offense on someone else's behalf. I think Dil gives the training herself.

    Whatevers, dudes.

I really like Kilbane on the show Think he's interesting and worthwhile.

But I am growing weary of some of the others. There have been a few times recently when some if the fringe members have hosted the show. I was pleasantly surprised.

McIntyre was good this past week and is more likeable than the PC Warriors.

Ah come on Donie, would you not rather have Woolly back?? Rather than Kilbland? I think you may be in denial. :D

Leave Wooly where he is because his shows are so good and if he returned to Newstalk he wouldn't have that creative control. He'd be regulated by the PED police.

Kilbane is ok but I do find him very bland and his sports knowledge isn't nearly good enough for someone that's now working as a presenter of a sports show. It's only soccer and maybe racing where his knowledge is up to scratch.

He doesn't seem to offer a strong opinion on anything (outside of the David Haye thing). In fairness he is good when they have a former Irish soccer player like Cunningham or McAteer on but overall I don't think he has nearly the knowledge or insight into enough sports to justify his place on their panel and I'm sure he's not the cheapest guy to employ.

Maybe. Then again, maybe it's because at least I can tell Kilbane apart from the other ones.

But yis can keep your Wooly thanks very much. Was it not the case that his schtick was just to take the opposite/controversial stance all the time?

Yeh, thought one of the best bits of the recent McAteer piece was when he starts praising/ defending Richard Keys. That turned Joe's sense of things completely on its axis. Couldnt have a go at Jason because he was too busy rimming him at the time, but if they were doing a news item on Keys in the studio with no guests around you can just imagine the PC outrage.

GAA hour is top notch. Wooly was great on off the ball but I prefer to have the Gaa hour now. He was a complete wind up merchant in fairness

Is he a wind-up merchant on the GAA Hour?

Any times i listened he just shouts his opinion across. He gets good guests on but the regulars are very poor imo

Is that any good actually I was thinking about tuning in... he doesn't seem to get a lot of promotion.

That's what I'm trying to find out. If he is just acting as a WUM then I won't bother. But if the discussion is insightful then I would give it a go.

I listened to the full GAA Hour podcast last night. Wooly, Cian Ward and Conan Doherty. I found it was good in-depth analysis and an enjoyable hour of passionate conversation. I will take passion over blandness all day. It gives you something to ponder or argue.

Has anybody ever heard the story of why he left Newstalk? He was there one week and then the news broke at the weekend, and he's got about as much mention on Off The Ball as Tim Allen gets at the Ballymaloe Cookery Classes since. It must have been less than amicable.

he was put on gardening leave. there was a little bit of nagging between them on twitter a few months ago, but OTB didn't really rise to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 908 ✭✭✭Jayesdiem

He probably made a sexist joke or complimented Lance Armstrong.

I think it was just a matter of him deciding to move to joe ie, better deal presumably.

Don't think there was any particular incident that led to his departure, but open to correction.

According to the tweets referred to above, he had fallen out with 2 of the OTB team before he left. One was clearly Gilroy and I'm guessing the other was Adrian Barry. The ex-sports editor and current sports editor. Falling out with management is kind of Parkinson thing, isn't it?

He definitely added something to the show, something which they are missing now, but I'd imagine he would be a difficult bloke to get along with over a certain period of time.

I taught McIntyre was very good in the hot seat, very professional, sticks to the sport, knows it's not all about him. He has good knowledge of the main sports.Comes across as a lad who enjoys his job. And unlike Ger and Joe knows it's not all about him.

The only reason he got a gig with OTB was because he was mates with Gilroy so would be surprised.
Think he was just put on leave for a month when he handed in his notice. Im sure if Joe/Ger/Nathan etc were to move to a rival the same would happen. Happens in a lot of jobs

Yeah but they didn't speak about him much if at all after he left.

When Cian Murtagh left it was very different, his last weekend on the show, they brought him to US for Ireland game v All Blacks.

They said he was moving to Joe.ie. if they mentioned him anymore its just free advertising for a rival.
Cian was a sports reporter in fairness. Not exactly a major contributor besides reading the news and doing the crappy quiz.

He tweeted that he only listens to OTB on Mondays and Tuesdays(the nights when Joe is on) and gets on with all the OTB team except for two. That would suggest that Gilroy is one of them. Graham Hunter could be the other one, he a spat with him on twitter before he left - but I'm not sure he would be considered part of the "OTB team".

I dont think we can blame anybody for not being able to get on with that arrogant, obnoxious name dropper. I don't understand how the others actually still indulge him.

I think I remember that but wouldn't call it a spat at all. Wolly asked Hunter something on Twitter, not any abuse or controversy, and Hunter blocked him and said he didn't have time for this or something.
