I can tell you there's nobody anywhere near this part of the country looking for more rain fine spell ended 4,weeks ago! It's supposed to be summer after all

Ya tis after moving in well down here now. And we've had plenty of it over the last couple of weeks. Rain no breeze and supposed to be moving across the country towards the North East.

This is where the cows were the last 4 grazing, only moved after milking this evening.

It just shows how little we've gotten in comparison to lads further east. Soil moisture deficit here only getting back to normal for the time of year for us.

Swap the green and the brown in that pic and you'll have one of my fields

Good day here in the west up until 6pm, showers since then and looking wet for tonight.
It'll take a week of no rain to dry land around here.

Had to move cows and calves just now. Had them moved to a field with no real shelter. It's like a Nov night.....wet and cold. Was afraid to leave them. Can someone switch off the tap:eek:

Well. Do you want anymore rain?

    Is the drought over?

Have enough to last a month or so depending on what comes next. Dry and windy weather won't be long drying here.

Is the calcium lime you spread on the land after having an effect? I mean do you think it's after opening up the ground a bit and making it a bit more free draining or no difference from beforehand.

I definitely think it opened the ground up a bit here.

There was definitely more grass there this round but the lime wasn't washed in for very long before they had to graze it.

As for opening up the ground, it's too early to tell. Like I said, we didn't get a fraction of the rain that has fallen elsewhere so what fell was absorbed quickly. Even the peaty section of that paddock that was limed had no damage at all. It looked much the same as the photo above when they came out of it. And that paddock hasn't been reseeded since 1984 so there is a stable grass population there which I think helps to reduce damage when it does get wet.

Lots of reseeding to do here in the next few years though:o

Anyway, back on topic, very windy out now with occasional showers and fair drying too.

Bright, breezy and humid out now.

Awful lot of water on the land now, would take few days of drying to travel some fields here :(

West Clare is equally as miserable. I was pulling up some stakes yesterday and every hole was filled with water.

Went out in the jeep to herd this morning cause it was bucketing down and nearly got stuck in the gaps. Serous amount of rain has fallen in the last 10 days.
On the flip side we had to buy in brewers grain in May to mix in the diet feeder to supplement the bulls feed cause grass growth had diminished due to lack of rain.

Grand morning here. A little cloudy and overcast but not looking like imminent rain yet anyhow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,374 ✭✭✭✭_Brian

Pouring rain here in Cavan, has rained most of the morning too.
Looked at ten day forecast there and 6 out of the 10 days are showing rain.
