Ah balls. Hope you get it sorted soon and get back on the road.

    A *complex* tear, hmmm?

    Sorry to hear that.

Hope they'll be able to get you back on the road before too long.

Jees how do you fix that? I hope it's not too difficult and doesn't knock you too much.

Secretly selfishly hoping it's a quick fix so the log isn't paused :o

    Tnx

Looks like surgery is the only option.

Pretty deflated but in the greater scheme of things it's trivial.

I'm out walking and doing S&C but no running at the moment.

The training content of this Log will be even lower than usual over the coming months but I'll keep tipping along as I enjoy it and it helps keep the head straight!

I fleetingly thought of jacking it all in an embracing the warm bosom of obesity, inactivity and auld age but I'm too thick and stubborn for that.

I reckon in the next life I'm gonna be an Olympic marathon runner :)

Coincidently enough my mum needs surgery on her knee because the cartilage is gone in it. She's completely inactive and overweight so that isn't always the answer! :D

Very sorry to hear about this. Stay this way; far too early to be spending your days on the couch!

That's the spirit! I envy your commitment to S&C. Your updates are good for all of us so keep em coming!

In all seriousness, sorry to hear that. Any idea when you'll have the surgery? (so OO7 can send you flowers :pac:).

I had a meniscus tear myself many moons ago and recall being back running straight lines fairly soon after the surgery - a few weeks I think.

Keep the head up C, at least you've a handle on the niggle now

Sorry to hear this. Time to purchase some Lycra but no photos please.

Far too young and handsome for an "auld" on your log yet C. Your "Port" years are way over the horizon yet and you'll have to rebuild and run to get there.

Keep up the reports. The images keep me in check. That live Korean Octopus in the sauce still has me reaching for the bacon and cabbage every time.

Sorry to hear the news, but Hopefully you'll recover as quick as DD, and if you want to be Olympian in next life, best to get started soon :D

Thanks be to jesus that you're too stubborn for inactivity because there would be a lot of inconsolable boardsies if this log were to be paused.

Rotten luck C, but glad you've gotten to the bottom of the problem. Keep us up to date on your op and progress. I might even get you to join me for a yoga or S&C class one of these evenings :)

As a new reader of your log, that's good news.

I mean no offence when I say your lifestyle, with work travel, training, family - it's exhausting just reading about it. But it shows a fantastic drive and determination (dare I say, it seems a bit nuts :)). As a novice runner, the steps you take to fit in training is a lesson to me on how not to try come up with lame excuses.

    Hope surgery/rehab goes well.

The support and banter on here is incredible, it's like a collective online psychiatrist and the training logs section is the best part of Boards.

I've been trying to call in favours left, right and centre to get to see a specialist and this morning I got a letter from one that really lifted my spirits.

Initial consultation next week and provisionally booked for scoping last week of June, which is fantastic coz it appears like there is a massive waiting list to get it done.

The surgeon must be a runner coz he actually stated in his note "don't believe anyone who tells you that running is bad for your knees". He also said that there is a tear but the rest of the knee is very healthy and there should be no reason why there isn't many more miles left in it. This was so positive I initially put on my paranoid hat and started wondering did one of the lads photoshop headed paper and send it to me as a wind up!

Rang the surgery and got provisional dates confirmed.

I've been told to be as active as I can between now and then and that I can also do some short runs (no hills or twisting). Absolutely delighted coz to be frank (and no disrespect to our Tri fairy friends) I'd rather be a fat chain smoking drunk that have to take up swimming :)

Double D, said to me we were evolved to run, "well some of us were"! What the Northside Kenyan doesn't realise is that my ancestors were gatherers not hunters :)

Thanks again for the nice words and support.

Ps. Rockyman I'll ask the surgeon to do a bit of nip & tuck while he's at it, I'll look even better in the photos if you do the Conn 100 this year :)

    Gotta look for my runners!

Sorry to hear this, I'd be interested to hear what symptoms you had to trigger you going for a scan, how bad was it? I've often ignored niggles in the hope they will go away which they usually do.

Anyway, best of luck with the rehab, already looking forward to seeing you getting back on track, sounds like you've got a good doctor on the case anyway.

Just catching up here sorry to see your injured but good to see the positivity in the latter post . Hope all goes well for you.

I went skiing for a day in March and fell, the ski hit my knee a fair belt but it didn't swell or cause me any immediate issues. It started to periodically ache after that though, however once I warmed up the ache would go away. Sitting, driving or flights used to set it off. I saw 3 physio and a local physical therapist and they did tests for a torn meniscus but they all felt that it was more likely a ligament strain that would heal slowly. I was very sore after the aborted Limerick marathon and it was at this point that I was starting to get concerned. It was taking longer to warm up and the pain to dissipate when running but it always seemed to be ok in the middle of even fast runs and I even managed some 20 mile runs on it.

Lately Ive been getting one on one S&C sessions and when I did lunges it was very sore, the trainer was concerned with this and wanted me to get an MRI. I didn't want too as at my age they'll always find something wrong and I was still running. Last Friday he made me do some "sissy lunges" and the knee was in bits afterwards. Intuitively at this stage I had a feeling that it was something a little more serious and I got a referral immediately. Toyboy Tang pulled a few strings and I got an MRI over the bank holiday weekend.

I probably should have had it done a lot earlier but I was still managing to run.

Have the scope surgery booked for 21st June and I've gotten very positive feedback on the surgeon doing it.

Thanks for that, I guess you knew in your heart something was wrong but were hoping it wasn't true. Best of luck with it in any case!

No biggie, it's not that you were any use at the running anyway. Be different if you were gunning for a sub 3 marathon or something........... Oh wait!!!

Best of luck with the procedure C, have no doubt whatsoever you'll be back strong as ever after the rehab.

    Fri 2nd-thur 8th: no running.

    I did 3 x 80 mins walks and 3 S&C sessions.

A bit of a concern is the pounds are starting to go back on. No running and comfort eating is a double whammy so I need to carefully keep it in check. I'm almost a stone heavier that I was last October.

Fri: surgeon said to start running again but no hills or twisting/turning. Did 4 miles easy around the grass pitch, spent too much time worrying that I'd twist my knee on the uneven surface and not enough time enjoying it!

Sat: late evening run, 5 miles easy on local roads, felt surprisingly stiff!

Sun: did a family relay with the 3 kids, the 7 year old ran his 1.7 miles without stopping or complaining, the two teenagers, mother of God, moaning and groaning before, durning and after!

    5 miles very easy.

Pm: got out for another easy 4 miles.

    9 miles for the day.

Short term goals: (next 10 days)

    - I want to run 50 easy miles next week.

    - clean up the diet and lose the few extra pounds put on over last 2 weeks

    - 3 S&C sessions

    - 1 session in the pool with 10 easy front crawl lengths. (It better be a small pool :))

Did the surgeon say it's okay to 'run a few miles a week' or run '50 miles a week'..!! I know what it's like to be given and inch and take, well, many miles!!
