    Hi,

I have recently passed the test and am looking for a car, preferably a BMW or Mercedes-Benz. I am 18, my budget would be max 15k.

What model(s) do you suggest? My favourites are the 3 and 5 series and the A and C class.

    Thanks!

Is the 15k including insurance? If so, that leaves a good 2k for the actual car...

    M3 all the way OP.

    I'll vote for Merc C class ;):D

Have you tried getting insurance quotes on any of these cars you have suggested?

Just a note regarding insurance, if you're having any issues try having someone with a good driving history added as a named driver on your quote. I went into Axa for a quote and was told straight away they wouldn't even insure me without one year experience, with a full licence! Eventually got a quote of €3,000 on a 2017 1.0 110bhp Golf.

Liberty was €3,600 but went down to €1,400 fully comp with my mam as a named driver.

A little off topic, but you don't have to resort to driving a €500 **** box Micra for your first car :) I passed my test after 9 months and after having a full licence for 2 months I was driving a 310bhp Mustang in Orlando, done about 750km in two weeks. It's unfortunate that we're all tarred with the same brush, some of us can actually drive

So good luck in getting yourself a half decent motor :)

Definitely a bmw m power, maybe 7 series. But wait til july 1st to have the 172 plate.

Pearl white colour, tinted windows and the rest.

Remember you have 24 hours grace before needing insurance and even if the gardai do stop you, they have to be wearing their cap for any fine to be valid.

When did you get these quotes and what age are you if u dont mind saying.... I rang a few insurance companies for a 2010 1.6 tdi golf and most wouldnt even quote me other than one company who said 6000€ ..... Did you get those quotes by calling them?

I turned 25 in February, just before getting my full license. Got the quotes online about 2-3 weeks ago, went into AXA about two weeks ago then rang a broker and got the quote with Liberty the same time frame. Even a 2017 1.5 150bhp PoloGT was €1,700 which is good.

I love cars and I have a pretty well paying job for my age so it's not really fair to given ridiculous insurance quotes that would stop me from driving anything somewhat new. When doing an online quote on Axa one day it went from 2,600 to 3,600 just because I was looking at it a few times. Exact same car. Don't know why that's even legal. Pure price gouging.

I understand I'm a new driver but why not take into account I passed my test in 9 months. Some people fail 4-5 times and barely pass. Also Novice drivers can only get 7 points so naturally we're going to drive safer as opposed to 12 points. I'm not driving a 99 Corsa on bald tyres, I'm not going to end up in a ditch. I have a dash cam because people cannot drive and it seems that insurance companies don't want to help people in no fault claims, I can only imagine the difficulty I'd have as a novice if it was my word Vs theirs...

    Sorry. Rant over :)

It doesn't matter how fast you passed the test, insurance companies know the driving test in Ireland is hugely flawed and no real indication of driving skill. Even after passing the test it takes a few years to gain the experience needed to be rated as a good driver. with experience you get to understand how you car handles better, how to read other drivers and be alert to any screw ups they might do , how to read the road surface and to correct or cope with any skids/spins etc. None of this is taught in Ireland so the only way of learning is through experience for the majority of us unless you do some of the advanced courses.

The op is just making it up. In another thread he's married and enjoying country walks finding animal bones.

The 1 series, would that be a good model to choose? I don't really get this whole insurance thing, can somebody please explain?

Insurance is expensive when you're 18. That's basically it.

But why is it expensive? The basic question I'm asking is, which BMW or Merc models would be the lowest on insurance for my age.

    That's all I'm actually asking!

    This merc should be affordable.

I don't understand what your problem is.

I shall reiterate the original question, and a plain honest and somewhat detailed answer from an expert is all I'm really looking for:

Which BMW or Mercedes-Benz car models would be the lowest on insurance for an 18 year-old.

    It's that simple, that's all I'm asking.

None that I can think of. Even the A class or 1 series have a 1.5 litre engine.

You're going to have trouble getting insurance for a 1.0 litre car.

Have you tried putting your details into an online insurance quote generator?

The closest you will get to a Merc at 18 is one of these.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 97 ✭✭AzcuzCoz

    Nothing

How much on average would a 1 series be on insurance?

Also I can't find half a decent car insurance generator that actually works without personal details.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,992 ✭✭✭bmwguy

Not a single mention of being wound up yet! Lads, you are being wound up

Edit: Sorry there was. A few did cop it. Same poster as strung me along a few weeks ago I think asking about the entire bmw/Audi ranges I believe.

If you can't figure how to get past an online generator asking for personal details, you've no business being in control of a vehicle on a public road.

OK, so for a 1.6 litre 1 series, how much on insurance would that cost? Also, can somebody please reccomend a good car insurance calculator?

    e39 M5 or e46 M3 are the two cheapest BMW's insurance wise.

They are classed as a beginners car for when you are starting to drive.

Just did it for 1.6 1 series BMW - put in full details for 18. Strangely...
