Buying BMW/Merc for first car

    Hi,

I have recently passed the test and am looking for a car, preferably a BMW or Mercedes-Benz. I am 18, my budget would be max 15k.

What model(s) do you suggest? My favourites are the 3 and 5 series and the A and C class.

    Thanks!

Is the 15k including insurance? If so, that leaves a good 2k for the actual car...

    M3 all the way OP.

    I'll vote for Merc C class ;):D

Have you tried getting insurance quotes on any of these cars you have suggested?

Just a note regarding insurance, if you're having any issues try having someone with a good driving history added as a named driver on your quote. I went into Axa for a quote and was told straight away they wouldn't even insure me without one year experience, with a full licence! Eventually got a quote of €3,000 on a 2017 1.0 110bhp Golf.

Liberty was €3,600 but went down to €1,400 fully comp with my mam as a named driver.

A little off topic, but you don't have to resort to driving a €500 **** box Micra for your first car :) I passed my test after 9 months and after having a full licence for 2 months I was driving a 310bhp Mustang in Orlando, done about 750km in two weeks. It's unfortunate that we're all tarred with the same brush, some of us can actually drive

So good luck in getting yourself a half decent motor :)

Definitely a bmw m power, maybe 7 series. But wait til july 1st to have the 172 plate.

Pearl white colour, tinted windows and the rest.

Remember you have 24 hours grace before needing insurance and even if the gardai do stop you, they have to be wearing their cap for any fine to be valid.

When did you get these quotes and what age are you if u dont mind saying.... I rang a few insurance companies for a 2010 1.6 tdi golf and most wouldnt even quote me other than one company who said 6000€ ..... Did you get those quotes by calling them?

I turned 25 in February, just before getting my full license. Got the quotes online about 2-3 weeks ago, went into AXA about two weeks ago then rang a broker and got the quote with Liberty the same time frame. Even a 2017 1.5 150bhp PoloGT was €1,700 which is good.

I love cars and I have a pretty well paying job for my age so it's not really fair to given ridiculous insurance quotes that would stop me from driving anything somewhat new. When doing an online quote on Axa one day it went from 2,600 to 3,600 just because I was looking at it a few times. Exact same car. Don't know why that's even legal. Pure price gouging.

I understand I'm a new driver but why not take into account I passed my test in 9 months. Some people fail 4-5 times and barely pass. Also Novice drivers can only get 7 points so naturally we're going to drive safer as opposed to 12 points. I'm not driving a 99 Corsa on bald tyres, I'm not going to end up in a ditch. I have a dash cam because people cannot drive and it seems that insurance companies don't want to help people in no fault claims, I can only imagine the difficulty I'd have as a novice if it was my word Vs theirs...

    Sorry. Rant over :)

It doesn't matter how fast you passed the test, insurance companies know the driving test in Ireland is hugely flawed and no real indication of driving skill. Even after passing the test it takes a few years to gain the experience needed to be rated as a good driver. with experience you get to understand how you car handles better, how to read other drivers and be alert to any screw ups they might do , how to read the road surface and to correct or cope with any skids/spins etc. None of this is taught in Ireland so the only way of learning is through experience for the majority of us unless you do some of the advanced courses.

The 1 series, would that be a good model to choose? I don't really get this whole insurance thing, can somebody please explain?

Insurance is expensive when you're 18. That's basically it.

But why is it expensive? The basic question I'm asking is, which BMW or Merc models would be the lowest on insurance for my age.

    That's all I'm actually asking!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,750 ✭✭✭Avatar MIA

    This merc should be affordable.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 97 ✭✭AzcuzCoz

I don't understand what your problem is.

I shall reiterate the original question, and a plain honest and somewhat detailed answer from an expert is all I'm really looking for:

Which BMW or Mercedes-Benz car models would be the lowest on insurance for an 18 year-old.

    It's that simple, that's all I'm asking.

None that I can think of. Even the A class or 1 series have a 1.5 litre engine.

You're going to have trouble getting insurance for a 1.0 litre car.

Have you tried putting your details into an online insurance quote generator?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,514 ✭✭✭XsApollo

The closest you will get to a Merc at 18 is one of these.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 97 ✭✭AzcuzCoz

    Nothing

How much on average would a 1 series be on insurance?

Also I can't find half a decent car insurance generator that actually works without personal details.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭bmwguy

Not a single mention of being wound up yet! Lads, you are being wound up

Edit: Sorry there was. A few did cop it. Same poster as strung me along a few weeks ago I think asking about the entire bmw/Audi ranges I believe.

If you can't figure how to get past an online generator asking for personal details, you've no business being in control of a vehicle on a public road.

OK, so for a 1.6 litre 1 series, how much on insurance would that cost? Also, can somebody please reccomend a good car insurance calculator?

    e39 M5 or e46 M3 are the two cheapest BMW's insurance wise.

They are classed as a beginners car for when you are starting to drive.

Why not ring an insurance broker? That's their job. No one here can you insurance prices, but we all know it will be high... good luck.

    Here is my point:

At college, Trinity, to be precise, there is a mate of mine, he's 19, who drives a 151 D Golf. Great specs on it. I think his parents are on the scratcher, and he's from Ballymun or somewhere like that. He has the car insured and everything.

Now please explain how he is able to buy it and I'm not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭Muppet Man

That's a question on socio economics

You're question in post 17 is a bit different

That machine will f*ck you up, I was on it before one time, never again!

In all seriousness, you will have to drive a small engine car to build up NCB and then move on to a BMW or similar.

BMW 1 series. Your only criteria is your budget of 15k so ....

Here's one for 2.6k ... you'll need the rest for insurance.

I meant one that is relatively new. Not 181 or anything, but 08-141. I have seen a few 1 and 3 series for low prices on this range.

Audi, on the other hand, is a lot cheaper brand then BMW and Mercedes, so they might have some cheaper cars. I know a few mates around my age who drive fairly new ones.

More of the same again. You might think you're good, and you might well be good. But being a good driver isn't about driving to the rulebook, and relying on your dashcam as a witness when some cyclist comes out in front of you when you had right of way.

No point pulling out the rules of the road to show how good a driver you were in that case.

Marks models just off o Connell bridge sell corgi versions they will be much cheaper and will be worth more in years to come if left intact in the box ...

If you had said I am 25 or 30 we could discuss what to get that is unless you are extremely wealthy if so let us know ....Your biggest hurdle is insurance . I'd like to be a fly on the wall listening to that conversation when you ring a broker .... I'd say 3k to 5k 3rd party for a micra type car and for an RWD car like a beemer maybe 5K plus and that's being very conservative and that will be for a basic beemer/merc too ....

What insurance calculator did you put it into? History and Politics studies, along with English, if you must know.

Keep in mind if you can't get a quote online you'll have to call. I couldn't get a quote on a 2017 1.0 Golf online but could get a quote on the previous 1.2 engine in the same spec. Make sure you're getting the right trim/spec too because there's so many duplicates on insurance systems.

Once again, can you add a parent or relative with good driving history as a named driver? I don't think they'll tell you about that but a broker I spoke too did. If you can't get a parent or relative as a named driver on your policy, a broker should still give you a lower price. I'm still amazed the lowest quote I got on a new Golf was €2,900 and I'm getting it for €1,400 for having a named driver.

I guarantee you I'm not going to end up in a ditch. Why? I don't drive like a wanker. Today for example, back roads on the way home from work. 80kph roads but it was raining, it's pitch black and the roads are flooded. Had someone right up my arse but I kept it at 60kph because the conditions were poor. Not going to be pressured into going faster so someone can get home 60 seconds quicker. I also understand the danger of going way under the speed limit. Same road, perfect conditions and someone was doing 40kph! Nearly late to work because there wasn't much opportunity to pass legally and safely.

I'm not being cocky, I'm confident. I know I'm a new driver and need to get the years under my belt but I'm definitely off to a good start. I've driven about 3,000km in the last 3 months across motorways, back roads, city centre, rush hour etc. I've been cycling for the last 5 years so I know the ins and outs of using the road, safety, placement and observation. I know someone's next move before they do it. I definitely have a head start over other new drivers.

I've been meaning to do an advanced driving class, must get around to that soon. I'm also a pretty frugal driver, you won't catch me speeding because I'll be paying for it. I'm constantly asking for feedback from anyone who is a passenger.

All in all, I think it's ok for me to say I'm a half decent driver. As long as I keep trying to improve and be safe, there's nothing wrong with that :)
