If they have no aerial at all, Can you install an aerial on the dish - Ones that clamp on to the dish (Mercury 4G Ready Clamp on UHF Mixer Aerial - 10 euro) ? You could then run the aerial back through the existing satellite cable and then split it out at the cable going to the box with a 3 euro splitter.

Is this Mercury Aerial any good and where can you get one for ?10?

I see there is also what looks like a smaller version MAUHF-A27 by Mercury as well so which one would be better for saorview reception?

Might as well stick a coathanger on the dish. Rubbish .

    Wow that bad eh ?

I must admit that I have a fairly high antenna pointing at Wales from my coastal position with Mt Leinster through the back.

Have you tried these ? My attitude most certainly be ANY outdoor aerial is better than amplify a bad noise indoor aerial, especially not knowingg the location :)

They actually had an outdoor aerial so didn't need to buy one.

Yes not officially supported by Vix ,but Openatv support it .
There doesnt seem to be too much information about it online .

Yes the OS Mega Triple is excellent value and a great spec.
Btw its now only 179,90 euro at HM Sat.
    https://www.hm-sat-shop.de/hdtv-receiver-sat/edision/3351/edision-os-mega-2x-dvb-s2-1x-dvb-s2/t2/c-combo-receiver-pvr-ready-schwarz
Its definitely the best value triple tuner on the market now

Currently have a Sky basic package that is out of contract and I'm looking to replace my Sky+ HD box with an Enigma2 receiver. I'm new to all this technology folks so please excuse the silly questions.

    Requirements:
    - cost: Around 100-120 euro
    - brand : not sure since I'm new to this so a decent receiver with good warranty & support
    - capabilities: 7 day EPG, live pause/rewind, series link recordings and all the stuff the Sky+ box does today (except of course watch encrypted channels)
    - tuners : 2 satellite and 1 freeview/Saorview tuner
    - HD: internal HD capability is a must
    - apps: Nice to be able to run Kodi

Can anyone recommend a few receivers please.

My initial research suggests the cheapest option is to buy a 2 tuner receiver and use a USB DVB-T stick for Saorview. However, for a beginner like me the best value appears to be this Edision Mega Triple receiver from the link above - it's relatively new to the market so presumably has up to date technology and is powerful enough for what I need - am I wrong in thinking along those lines?

Will this box work in Ireland as-is and allow me to view both Saorview and freeview UK satellite channels?

I've never bought from this crowd so would welcome some advice in terms of shipping charges, warranty, support etc.

Would I be better buying from Amazon or a UK/Irish supplier?

Finally, does the volume button on the remote control change the volume of the signal going from the receiver to the TV or does it change the volume on the TV itself. I'd like it to do the former if possible.

    TIA

The Edision Mega should be fine (though a little more than the 100-120 Euro you mention)

It will allow you watch the Saorview and the fta satellite channels with 7 day epg, recordings, seires link etc.

another place to buy is freetv.ie - they give a 7.5% discount if you put in "Boards" when ordering.

Volume button changes the signal going to the TV from the box.

There is also the Amiko Alien 2 (SAB UNIX HD and Golden Media Triplex are the same inside the box) which is lower in power than the Mega and does hot have internal HD (I am using this and thinking of upgrading to the Mega)

Card sharing has been stopped by Sky - so I wonder if there will be some second hand boxes going cheap?!?

    Thanks for the info.

I know the Edision Mega is a bit more but it does have more 'stuff' like built in Bluetooth & WiFi and looks a lot nicer than the SAB box.

The German shop is quoting 186 Euro including shipping which is 16 euro cheaper than freetv.ie - is it worth spending the extra for better support e.g. if I have to return the box etc?

Does anyone know how long is the warranty from the German shop - are they good to deal with for warranty claims etc?

Someone I know has made a balls of their Zero and I'm trying to fix it. Anyone know what else I could try before I give up?

When I turn it on I see the Vu+ splash screen, but then the screen goes black and does not boot the image. The TV is still getting a video signal from the box though, it's just a black screen.

    I've tried re-flashing OpenPLI.
    Tried OpenVIX.
Tried the original image from Vu+.
Tried re-flashing the bootloader thinking it was damaged.

Still the same after all of that. Is it fecked?

I have dealt with HM Sat and Free tv and for the sake of 16 quid I'd go with Free tv. In my experience both companies are A1
Order today and you will have the item on Friday from freetv.

Have you locked at the OS Mini and then add a dvb-t for a tenner ? Will work out with a decent saving and have a very similar set up.Would get a decent hard drive with the money you save.

I discounted the OS mini because it doesn't have an internal HDD (maybe I'm wrong) and I'd rather avoid having HDDs and USB DVB-T sticks hanging off the back of the box because they are bound to be knocked about (in our house at least) and then you get a call at work asking why this new box isn't working and why can't we just get in Sky again etc.. ;)

If you don't want external HDD and dvb-t then I don't think you will get any better than the Mega.Any of the Edisions I have used have been perfect.

I have two different "hybrid" boxes. Both still working perfectly on the same sub (or a different sub from the same payment and same company).
Single tuner for sat and single tuner from cable, IPTV comes into effect for recordings and HD.
I have not mentioned anything here, so i assume it is ok to post.
I asked about the edision because it was for an old folks home, and i asked their questions here, so that they could see the answers.
I have both an AVOV fuse and a generic android brand with combo tuners.
The sub includes all options in case one goes down.

Yeah, looks like there's a few turning up on some English forums already, I'm going to try and get a triple or quad tuner box in the next week or two. I've already seen one at £100 with a hard drive in it and he's open to offers.

What forums would be selling boxs ?Im not in the market for one just curious.Would you trust buying a second hand box from someone on a forum, would you have any comeback?

I'm not sure if I am allowed mention other forums on this one. If you Google satellite forums you will see a few and just go to their sales section.

As for buying off a forum, it could be a bit dodge but if the user has a long history on the forum then they are probably going to be okay. It's still a chance though. Ideally you would meet the person and see it working but that's not really possible if they're 400 miles away.

There will probably be a few boxes showing up on ebay as well and at least you have some protection through PayPal on there

dare i ask if your well versed in flashing e2 boxes and your extracted image was on a good 8gb usb stick like a kingston, cruzer or integral and it was blinking updating?
i did have 2 boxes which did this but shut down and tv said no signal but yours still has a signal.
does your remote have any effect on black screen?

Branded USB, yes. I've flashed Zeros around 20-30 times over the past 2 years so I'm well versed. Never seen this particular black screen issue though.

Should've mentioned the problem started when the guy turned the Zero off at the wall without shutting it down. When he turned it back on the black screen issue began.

Remote doesn't do anything. Also tried getting a picture via the AV cable thinking the HDMI port could have been damaged, but that is also a black screen.

Tried pretty much everything at this stage. I'm out of ideas!

Another small thing I discovered - If I turn on the box with the HDMI in and the screen goes black it will retain the signal outputting at 1280x720, but if I turn on the box without a HDMI cable plugged in and then plug it in after 5-10 seconds, there is no signal at all.

Zero has two USB ports at the back. I'm presuming you have tried both.

The USB stick itself is normally to blame. Try another stick.

    Openvix

Boot up procedure on these boxes is to check for USB firmware first.

Try flashing the bootloader in case its damaged.

Persistence of unplugging and cold boot and watching screen should eventually pay off.

The box is definitely being flashed. The splash screen changes when I flash it. It looked like this before I tried flashing it, then after trying a blackhole image the splash screen looked like this. I guess you could say the box is not 'posting'. After the splash screen goes off the actual image isn't loading. It's really strange.

Tried flashing the bootloader already. No joy.

Also tried creating a backup of an image from another Zero and flashing that. It didn't flash though..It was an openvix image but when I turn on the box it still has the BH splash screen. Tried 3 times and even though the box goes into flashing mode, when I restart it nothing has been changed..Damaged flash perhaps?

I'll have to get my hands on an RS232 cable to hook it up and see.

I dont think these boxes have a Nullmodem port ?

Is there a HDD installed ? Disconnect it.

    Try the original Vu firmware.

Also if you have an A/V lead try that. The HDMI port might be knackered.

Finally, you could always try and telnet into the box to get the dmesg.

Already tried and mentioned these in an earlier post :)

No hard drive. Only the USB stick is in the box when flashing.

Zeros have a port labeled RS232 but it's actually an RJ12 port.

If you connect it up to the router via ethe thernet cable and login into your router to see the IP that has been assigned, you could then telnet into the box.

o 192.168.x.y (where x is either 1 or 0 and y is the last 2 digits in the IP assigned by DHCP in the router)

username is root and return unless he has a password.

    dmesg

(you could always try a "opkg update" followed by a "opkg upgrade" and a "reboot")

Tried last night and unfortunately the box isn't being assigned an IP. Right after I turn it on the LEDs on the NIC light up for a second but then go dark :(

Used advanced ip scanner to scan the local network just in case, but nothing pops up apart from my regular devices I have.

Could a crossover cable allow direct lan connection from the box to a PC/laptop ?

Only other thing I can think of is to disconnect HDMI and kill the power to the box for an hour and retry.

    Run out of options.

Believe it's impossible to do :(

I'll have a chat with the lad and see what he wants to do. He said it's out of warranty so he might just buy a new box.

When you flashed the bootloader and rebooted you did reflash an image as well ?

Thats the only fix for these. If that didnt work I'd be back to the retailer regardless of the warranty and ultimately the manufacturer in Vu+.

That is a strange problem alright.

Could it be a Vu+ clone?
