    Hi All,
Looking for some advice please. Which is better Linux receiver amiko alien 2 triple tuner or Edision os mini?
    Thanks

The Edision Mini would be a quicker box overall due to the hardware it contains, it is available with different tuner setups including a triple tuner (albeit with a usb tuner). Because of the USB slot being used as a tuner, you won't be able to plug in a USB HD for recordings etc.

The AA2 is a triple tuner box, you still have the option to use a USB HD for recordings/timeshift etc. The hardware in the box isn't as good as the Edision mini but that's due to the fact that it has been for sale for a good few years now.

The SD picture quality in the AA2 is regarded to be better than in the the Edision's due to the type of processor in the box. I'm not much up on this end of things but it has been discussed in the AA2 thread on here.

There's 2 USB ports on the Edision box, one on the front and one on the back. I have it set up for my parents with the usb tuner in the back and USB HD in the front and everything is working great.

IDIT, how's the OS Mega going now you've had it a while. Rating out of 10?

Going great, moving around the menus is very fast, picture quality is fine with the adjustable AV settings, watching recordings is much easier.

95/100, losing marks for the SD picture quality but in no way is it a reason not to get one.

I've only used an openvix backup image which works very well.

Is the Mega OS the Edison? Also can a sata drive be used? I had look around and this seems to be the one that i would get my mother assuming it can have sata.

It's a high end Edision triple tuner Linux box, most notable feature is that it can play back Ultra High Definition files, if you have downloaded them or are streaming them from an online source. The interface is also very fast and reliable. Takes an internal SATA.

I've been following this thread with interest for a while now and it looks like a choice between these two. Any final recommendations/comments before I take the plunge?

OK, at first glance the edision triple tuner seems the better buy than the mutant twin which is a tenner sterling dearer on world of satellite. Adding a third terrestrial tuner may be possible by USB, or you can have one sat and one terrestrial as standard. Heres the thing. Although they are both 4K receivers, I just noticed in the spec on WOS webpage that the edision is only HD at the output, 1080. If this is correct then UHD material will play but be scaled back to HD. If you have or intend to buy a UHD telly then you would want to be able to see UHD content from the box. Admittedly this will be rare enough unless you download to HDD, or steam from UHD sources. In these cases if you have a UHD tv you should be able to play such files directly on the TV. The Mutant has 2160 output resolution, so that is a big future plus. Can mega owners here confirm this 1080 limit? Have you played any 4k content from the box?

I've not tried it but I don't think I could confirm as I don't have a TV to display more than 1080p.

    UHD not important for me.

The Octagon SF4008 is worth considering too.
Comes in twin and triple tuner versions ,very similar to the Mutant HD51 but a much better remote.
210 euro for the twin and 250 for the triple plus delivery from Germany.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the Audio narration? I have to keep knocking it off everytime when I am looking at something and then it starts it again the next day.

I remove it by pressing audio button on remote and selecting Sub

Is there a way in audio in setting to perm disable it??

    Doing my head in

    Thanks

Go into system setup and select auto language settings and change audio language selection 1 to English, and also change prefer audio track stored by service to no.

Edision OS Mini arrived today, and it has a single tuner (I misread the description, I thought it said twin DVB-S2, but it must not have had).
Where could I buy a USB tuner for it, and is it only DVB-T2?
Would there be any point or would i be better off sending it back and buying a twin tuner?

Did you buy from free tv.ie? The twin tuner combi with one sat and one terrestrial is 127, whereas a single sat tuner plus a USB tuner is 147, so I'd go for the exchange.

Itd be worth getting the twin tuner if you have 2 satellite feeds and want to record. If not its not such a big deal.

    Question on this-
Can you use a splitter to create multiple feeds? Or do the separate feeds need to be coming from the dish?

    Seperate feeds.

No, I bought it from Amazon for €90. I will try to return it. Thanks.

Best bet. USB tuners (for linux boxes) seem to only be terrestrial, sat ones only seem to configured for PCs, possibly raspberry pi boxes and are expensive items. Amazon are decent enough about returns. If your original supplier hasn't got a twin and you get a refund, Free.TV are about €113 for the sat twin delivered with boards discount, which I can't match on Amazon. Good Luck!

Thanks for that. When I look up Freetv, it seems to promote the combo tuner more. What advantages does this have?
I know RTE, TV3 and TG4 etc. come through better on DVB-T2, but can i watch one station and record another with a combo tuner?
Can i get virgin stations + sky stations (Freeview, of course) with a combo tuner?

The list of free channels via a satellite tuner are listed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free-to-air_channels_at_28%C2%B0E

    Saorview channels listed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saorview.

A single satellite tuner means you can either watch or record a channel through that tuner at one time. I don't know how an aerial works in that way.

With a combo you are receiving satellite and terrestrial, (you will need a bit of an aerial for the terrestrial). You can record one tuner watch another the same as a twin sat tuner, but you won't be able to record and watch two different sat channels as you only have one sat tuner, (only exception is when the channels are on the same tuned TP, e.g. BBC 1,2, 4 and Cbeebies are on one TP) The twin sat tuner gives you the full record/watch option (provided you have two cables from your dish), and it is easy to plugin a terrestrial USB stick tuner if you wish. The terrestrial channels from Satellite are only available in SD and are sky encrypted. RTE1 and 2 are in HD on terrestrial and the quality difference is noticeable. The edision mini triple shown on FreeTV is just the twin with the USB stick added, adds about €40 to the price. By virgin stations I presume you mean from a cable TV connection? You should be able to tune in the free channels off this , you have to configure the DVB-T tuner to a DVB-C for this, so you cant use it as a terrestraial tuner at the same time. Someone with Cable should comment on this.

Thanks for that. I ordered the twin tuner from FreeTV and might send back the single tuner to Amazon.
I have the single tuner setup openvix now with Slyk and everything i want. I guess kodi does not work on this box? Not important anyway.
If i am sending it back i will have to put it back to OpenATV.

I ordered from freetv yesterday around 2pm and paid for next day delivery. does anyone know what courier they use, and what time i might expect it? I have to wait in the house all day so far as i do not want to miss them.

One last question, will any USB tuner work (within reason) or is there a specific one i should get for this box, for terrestrial tv?

The support from freetv is very good, and quick. I'd ask them, if there is a specific type of tuner, they probably stock it.

Ordered on Thursday, paid for the express courier. The box was being sent to someone so they had tried to ring me but my phone is bust. I got in contact with them on Friday, the courier that they use does not deliver on Saturday. So i have to wait for it today, and there is no info on their website.
I think in future i will just use amazon. It just seems a lot less hassle and cheaper.
With the "express" courier from freetv (€7.50), the price goes up to €126.40 anyway.
Amazon is €115 delivered, and I would have it now.
