According to the papers today, you will need the card to apply for a passport or driver's licence in future.

Do you need a PSC for passport renewal - I thought you did not

You do indeed. Never mind the bollocks that it's not compulsory but it is

Your going to need one soon to open a bank account too.
There'll be a stampede to get them in the end and then the delays will cause murder .

If your getting a FIRST TIME ADULT PASSPORT you need one.
If you've lost your passport and it expired 10+ years ago you need one.
So far , no one else needs one.

    Irish Times today?
Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe confirmed that all passport applicants will be required to have a Public Services Card (PSC) from the autumn.
    .......

The Road Safety Authority confirmed that all applicants for driving licences will be required to have the card from early next year.

I'm not sure what you are trying to prove with that link constance tench

It doesn't answer the question why you need it for those items unless you are suggesting it is indeed to introduce a ID card by stealth .

Yes, I have one. I had to get mine when I signed on. It is the most pointless piece of plastic I have in my wallet as it is not accepted by the DSP as ID. To get the card I had to provide them with all the usual forms of ID but even after I had my card, I still had to provide all the usual forms of ID when at the office.

So you need to present a passport or drivers licence to get the PSC and you have to present the PSC to get a passport or drivers licence.

No if you are renewing and or getting a new licence then you need tie PSC.
Makes sense so to get it now cause imagine the queues come autumn.

What if you are a member of the Diaspora and you need to renew your passport?

See what annoys me is that I'm abroad and therefore have not with my current address on it.
But I have a car loan agreement which has my Irish address on it as my residence address.
I'm bringing this as my proof and drivers licence which also has my Irish address on it.
    See what they say anyway.

    Irish Times today?

That's from the Autumn. Right now the two scenarios I quoted are the only ones where aPSC is required.
In the next 24 months you will hardly be able to go into any public service office to apply for anything without a PSC card.
Anyone reading this should go now and get one to avoid the chaos that is going to ensue when this gets going.

I'm suggesting there's a bit of a push on to reach the magic three million SPDUB.

Interestingly, the company that make the new social serices card also make passports...make of it what you will.

That they win the public tender by being able to benefit from economies of scale....??

I probably should have made it clear. From the autumn it will be needed which is when more.or less I'll need to renew it so in my situation I'd need the PSC.

From an estimated 24 million in 2012 to issue 3 million cards -to- 60 million for 3 million cards by the end of 2017.

'The total cost of the project is estimated to be in the region of €24 million for a population of 3 million people.
There will be no charge to members of the public to get their Public Services Card.
    '
[But sure, where else would the money come from?]

    http://www.thejournal.ie/what-is-the-public-services-card-443305-May2012/

'State faces €60m bill for public services cards by end of year
Cost of cards payable in full if delivery target of three million is not met'
