Whats the lowdown with the doughnut places in the city?
I passed "The Shack" and it was packed with a queue down the street..
And I know that there are others around Washington street etc..

Do they all make their own in store?

I don't eat doughnuts myself but I think I read here that The Shack get their's brought in from Supervalu? If so, how is it so popular?

I'd imagine if I wanted a doughnut, I would at least want it freshly made..

    Just curious..

Had some donuts from the Shack earlier this week, they were nice and fluffy. No idea if they are frozen as said earlier. There were only 2 other people in there when I was in though!

Ate in Orso for the first time. God I loved it. Everything was amazing, starter, main and dessert. The taster wine was a great idea when driving. Staff were so sound.

I had doughnuts from the Shack during the week. I thought they were very poor. They really tasted like thaw and serve with overly sweet toppings/fillings. I tried Huckleberry's a few weeks ago and while they were better, they were still nothing to write home about. Can't see this doughnut fad lasting long, they look great, but the quality just isn't there for the price.

Looks like Ali's Kitchen is gone and there's a Heinz pop up restaurant in its place.

To be honest, I couldn't see Ali's working. There's always seemed far too many staff compared to seating.

I was never in there; but I thought the donuts my wife brought back were the best of the lot.

A thaw and serve doughnut will never be amazing. Doughnuts should be fried and probably eaten no more than 2 hrs after it's made. I've tried the Shack and Huckleberries and while they were nice to try once, I can't see there being a big repeat business for these places once the novelty dies within the year. I don't understand why a sole doughnut shop can't make fresh ones!

Surely Ali's is just converted for some promotion no? Was doing a serious trade & very popular so doubt it's gone completely, I hope not anyway I love the place!

Ate in the shack, really liked the selection they had although their coffee is quite poor, the rebel red was nice all the same, what I enjoyed most was having it outside while there was some great street music being played - shout out to the duo Projéct playing Ben Howard beautifully

What sets them apart is doing ice cream too - given their location they should do a good trade for the summer

so the shack are thawing them and huckleberrys are getting them brought in fresh yeah?

if so - wow - you would imagine a doughnut shop would make the bloody things..

like i said, not a doughnut eater but if i was i would at least want it made fresh..

when i was younger and could eat them, when living in dublin there was a place on O Connell St that made them and sold them through a hatch.. hmmmm can still smell them.. not sure if its still there

    r

I hope it's not gone too, though I've never actually eaten there it seemed like a nice addition to Cork. I've only heard good things about it.

Looked like the name was gone.

Edit: checked their Twitter and it looks like some event or charity gig, alright

Went into son of a bun last Monday evening.. Hadn't been in there in ages... Still busy... It was... Grand.. At best..
We were seated at the bar while waiting for a table.. (no problem). Couldn't get the bar staffs attention.. They went to great effort to avoid eye contact. ...
. . Chips came with rosemary salt (sounds nice) but when they arrived there was a very generous tablespoon of salt dumped on top of the chips..
. .which looked seriously cool, and utterly inedible.. Sent them back. just to. "knock "the salt off, a fresh portion came out though...
. . Having said that I'll go back and try again...

Ali's Kitchen is back in action tomorrow I think. Heinz did the same thing in Dublin the week before to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Ali's is verrrrry popular. Usually out the door busy at weekends and can be quite tricky to get a table at times.

Tbh, I didn't think it was too much better than most of the other breakfast options in town and I'm not a fan of the coffee. I'm also not a sweet person so the doughnuts, etc would be wasted on me but I'm told they're great.

Ate in Bunsen last night myself. Burger was absolutely lovely - far better than Coqbull, Son of a Bun, etc. Chips weren't anything special but, again, probably better than the sides in some of the competition.

Great beer selection too. I got a Punk Ipa and there were some Brooklyn lagers doing the rounds too. In comparison, I went in to Coqbull last week and they had Metalman, etc listed on the menu but were sold out of all the Ipa except Cute Hoor, a Heineken product and damn awful beer. Was disappointing.

I'd happily go back to Bunsen anyway. Might try a double burger and no sides next time though.

I went there some time last year and tried those rosemary salted fries, this immediately came to mind..

Finally! A bit of competition for Cafe Mexicana  Hopefully it will be tasty. Would be nice to have another place open again around that area.

Had a take away from a new Chinese in Blackpool called Lily House. We seen it walking back home after having a coffee in Blackpool shipping center.

Very nice and tastes like what Chinese used to taste like before it came extreme food in a a jar.

The Crisply chicken was so nice and fresh and i really enjoyed it. The girlfriend got chicken chaw main and she loved it. We also got chicken balls just 4 of them to try them and they where so nice and fresh tasting. Very impressed with it.

Seen on there facebook they do a 2 curise lunch for 10 euros and thats the plans now for next weekend when where off as we really liked it.

Very easy like there used to be a different more fresh taste of sauces in Chinese years ago where every one did taste different.

But now they all taste the same if i get from say a Chinese in Waterford, cork where i am from in tipp cahir. Could get the same dish and magically they all taste the same and look the same.

You can buy the full sauce from the Chinese wholesalers here in Ireland where i used to work in hospitality i used to deal with one to buy cooking oil and the likes and was offered samples of the sauce and MSG witch is know as tender salt ha.

But say a Indian i could get a curry in 3 different places and they do taste different as its more then likely made different.

This was the 1st time i have had a crispy chicken that did not taste like it came out of a jar in ages.

weirdly enough, had my first 3-1 in four years on saturday and it was gloopy and mank. friends had some other stuff and they all said the same thing, that its just gone from being a bit fresh and different to all coming from the same suppliers, that you Chinese takeaway in carrigaline is the same stuff as up in blackpool
spring rolls arnt even made fresh anymore all bought in. all tasted like that weird salt taste (which i assume is MSG).
bring back the chinese that used to be down by Oasis... the proper restaurant...

I don't have any memory of Chinese restaurants in Ireland ever tasting any way fresh or good. I always thought that they all tasted the same.
I didn't realise things had gotten worse.

Apart from Yuan Ming Yuan, I haven't been to a Chinese in Ireland in over a decade.
