Summer cycling races

Is it right that over one hundred cyclists can take over a road, and be an obstruction to cars, on a Sunday morning? It's almost as bad as sulky racing. One of them is going to get killed, and although tragic, it is going to be understandable when it happens. They need to close off roads, and get the correct permissions before they run these races

They have been this way for decades. The races are well stewarded and most often perfectly safe with delays of only minutes for other road users.

they would have the correct permissions and guards are usually involved and safety statements done and checked . While crashes and falls are part and parcel of cycle racing the biggest danger is from drivers who don't want to share the road with other legitimate road users and who don't co-operate with the marshals
Its nothing like sulky racing . cycle racing with the correct permissions in legal sulky racing is not

Many cars hindered my progress to reach the Dublin mountains today. Many more hindered my progress getting down. I was stuck behind them.

Maybe we should ban cars because I had somewhere to get to that was a bagazillion times more important than what everyone else was up to. Am I doing this right?

was out for a spin myself today. complete nightmare passing through kilmore quay , cars all over the place , parked on double lines , double parked , driving along in what i would describe as ''an ice cream eating induced state of some sort of trance '' no regard for other road users

Why do you think it wouldn't be right?

Were these roads built specifically for motorists or for all road users?

Cycling seems to have taken over from golf as the sport preferred by fat, middle-aged men who enjoy wearing ridiculous clothes.

Yes. And the ones wearing the gear are the ones with the high opinion of themselves, who refuse to use dedicated cycle lanes, and instead cycle on the road in tandem with their fat friends

if he wants roads that were built specifically for car he should drive up and down the m50 or other motorways all day and its not cyclists that will be holding him up then . i wonder will he complain about motorists holding him up

But they are not the one's in the road races you opened the thread about.

I don't think (s)he cares because (s)he is far more important than everyone else.

There would have been plenty of advance warning and signs up about the SOSAD event in the area too. It's really odd for someone to complain about a charity event. Then again there was a thread complaining about Darkness into Light. Society is going down the drain.

OP you appear to be referring to what is known as a Sportive. Usually such things are well advertised in advance and are run along quiet roads. I fail to see how your lack of planning should be of the slightest concern to anyone else.

Probably not because it's perfectly acceptable for motorists to lane hog, break red lights, speed, tailgate, change lanes without indicating, brake for no reason etc etc but heaven forbid a few cyclists take up road space.

Id rather fat, middle age men out exercising. Not a bad thing in a country with the obesity and health issues we have.

The one I like the most is when a motorist shouts at me to use the cycle lane that's currently blocked by a parked car.

I was cycling from Rathoath to Laytown today. Is there a cycle lane you can recommend along this route?
