Summer cycling races

Is it right that over one hundred cyclists can take over a road, and be an obstruction to cars, on a Sunday morning? It's almost as bad as sulky racing. One of them is going to get killed, and although tragic, it is going to be understandable when it happens. They need to close off roads, and get the correct permissions before they run these races

They have been this way for decades. The races are well stewarded and most often perfectly safe with delays of only minutes for other road users.

They are on the juice like the real boys also.

My trip from Slane to Drogheda this morning was anything but safe, and doubled the length of my journey

You have an unhealthy obsession with men on bikes, you're forever posting about them.

Is this a manifestation of some suppressed homosexual feelings you jay have? Might be best posting in the personal issues or Sex and sexuality forums.

Another cyclist bashing thread? Originality has died. :(

they would have the correct permissions and guards are usually involved and safety statements done and checked . While crashes and falls are part and parcel of cycle racing the biggest danger is from drivers who don't want to share the road with other legitimate road users and who don't co-operate with the marshals
Its nothing like sulky racing . cycle racing with the correct permissions in legal sulky racing is not

What a strange abstract comment. Surprising coming from someone who posts on Boards regularly

Many cars hindered my progress to reach the Dublin mountains today. Many more hindered my progress getting down. I was stuck behind them. :( Maybe we should ban cars because I had somewhere to get to that was a bagazillion times more important than what everyone else was up to. Am I doing this right?

was out for a spin myself today. complete nightmare passing through kilmore quay , cars all over the place , parked on double lines , double parked , driving along in what i would describe as ''an ice cream eating induced state of some sort of trance '' no regard for other road users

Why do you think it wouldn't be right?

Were these roads built specifically for motorists or for all road users?

Cycling seems to have taken over from golf as the sport preferred by fat, middle-aged men who enjoy wearing ridiculous clothes.

Yes. And the ones wearing the gear are the ones with the high opinion of themselves, who refuse to use dedicated cycle lanes, and instead cycle on the road in tandem with their fat friends

You obviously have ignored every anti cyclist thread. All this has been discussed before. People doing health activity legally.

if he wants roads that were built specifically for car he should drive up and down the m50 or other motorways all day and its not cyclists that will be holding him up then . i wonder will he complain about motorists holding him up

There was no racing around Slane today.
All those "fat middle aged men" were doing a 90k charity ride in aid of SOSAD.

But they are not the one's in the road races you opened the thread about.

Edit. And now it seems it wasn't even a race but a charity event. I must let you know when the next charity walk is here so you won't get delayed that day either.

I don't think (s)he cares because (s)he is far more important than everyone else.

There would have been plenty of advance warning and signs up about the SOSAD event in the area too. It's really odd for someone to complain about a charity event. Then again there was a thread complaining about Darkness into Light. Society is going down the drain.

OP you appear to be referring to what is known as a Sportive. Usually such things are well advertised in advance and are run along quiet roads. I fail to see how your lack of planning should be of the slightest concern to anyone else.

Probably not because it's perfectly acceptable for motorists to lane hog, break red lights, speed, tailgate, change lanes without indicating, brake for no reason etc etc but heaven forbid a few cyclists take up road space.

he knows he's wrong so he changed the goalpost now and made it about cycle lanes

Id rather fat, middle age men out exercising. Not a bad thing in a country with the obesity and health issues we have.

If that gets debunked he'll change them again to high-vis or helmets or lights blah blah blah.

and park in cycle lanes or pull out of their driveways straight across them

The one I like the most is when a motorist shouts at me to use the cycle lane that's currently blocked by a parked car.

I was cycling from Rathoath to Laytown today. Is there a cycle lane you can recommend along this route?

probably had to excuse himself to the person he was speaking to on the phone so he could shout at you

It was mad stuff. Some of the cyclists were reckless. That's probably why they were wobbling all over the place and a danger to cars. The road should have been closed off and diversions put in place, for the safety of all

Choose a road that has a cycling lane, and we will all be far safer

Why don't you chose a road that is guaranteed to have no cyclists. The M1 for example.

reckless , i doubt it . wobbly , possibly but if you leave them enough space , where's the danger

Choose a road where there isn't a charity event taking place.

No, they're not. They (cyclists) pass each other out at ridiculous places as if the road were closed to all but them. I've been a passenger in a car going against them.

    FIXED THAT FOR YA .
guards will insist on races being marshaled so maybe your driver should have pulled over as requested

Then that races was badly marshalled if you were not held until they passed. The lead car should have signalled you to pull in as well.

You may FIX THAT FOR me all you like. I'm not defending motorists. Both motorists and cyclists are irresponsible. This being a thread about cycling, im relaying my experience. It's as if they think that the road has been officially closed for them. Sorry there, Mr. Fat Man in Lycra on the ring of Kerry who is bursting his lungs (and his €600 orange glasses) to pass his wife just to prove that his dick is bigger than hers.

I agree, it was badly marshalled. We were going from Kenmare to Sneem in a car and knew nothing til we came against hundreds of cyclists coming against us. Very poor from organisers.

What complete nonsense. Cars are taking over roads? Roads are engineered for cars, vans busses, trucks etc...
Cycle lanes are engineered for bicycles, although most cyclists would prefer to be in the gutter of a road intended for vehicular traffic instead of being safely buffered from said vehicular traffic in a cycle lane on routes which have perfectly adequate cycle lanes.

    Glazers Out!

Only as nonsensical as the post it was in reply to. Context.

As for the rest of your post. Roads are for cars rabble rabble rabble. They're not. If you want to drive on a road without cyclists then find a motorway and drive to your heart's content. Preferably one in a different country where you won't be a danger to cyclists in Ireland.

You mean like this one?

Also plenty of our rural roads were "engineered" for livestock, pedestrians and bicycles many years ago, and have since been occupied by vehicular traffic with little to no improvements, safe for a bit of fresh tarmacadam, so that point doesn't really hold water.
