I know a Golf GTI is nowhere near a M3, the point I was trying to make is that neither is a 1.2 Tsi anything like a GTI.

Only winding you up, think Golf GTIs are great (I've had a few of them over the years).

Had a couple of BMWs with the inflatable bolsters, not sure they're a deal breaker really. Do think the leg extender is great though.

Wasn't you I was poking at either Mark :) yeah I know your GTI history... I was on vagdrivers when you hopped from one to another!

I mentioned earlier I drove a 430d last week. I thought the seats were great in fairness. Electrically adjustable bolsters.... I think I need those. I thought the seat base felt very narrow in them though. First world problems.

    No I knew that :)

SE BMW seats are probably an acquired taste but generally they get them right. That 430 in FK seems to be gone now btw!

You deffo need to have a go in a GTI anyway OP, the experience is very different to a smaller engined version without the whole package.

    Hi guys,
I've just joined the club. Love the car so far, though the parking brake is taking a bit of getting used to.

Just wondering what service/repair/information books there are available for the mk7 1.6 Diesel bluemotion model. I thought I could just buy a Haynes manual but it seems that they dont have one  And then I went looking at Chilton and Bentley and they dont have anything either.

Is there any service manual type book that somebody could recommend? Thanks.

Is your car manual or DSG? I find the auto parking brake excellent, I don't even think about it anymore. Turn on auto hold and let it do the work for you.

I would think the mk7 is too new for there to be a repair manual for it.
You can find parts and exploded diagrams on etka if that is any use.

Hi Neil, I'm sure that I'll love it as well when I get used to it. But it was embarrassing when I was trying to drive out of the garage and there's a message saying "press the brake" on mission control. I'm there as the sales staff are smiling and waving at the front of the forecourt... and me saying "just go f**king forward will you for jaysus sake, even my old car went f**king forward". :o

Erwin for repair and maintenance literature/manuals. You can pay for an hour access, and if your broadband connection is up to it, that'll be plenty of time to download everything available for the mk7.

Yeah, I saw people talking about that on other forums, but I was hoping to just get one book with everything in it. Since there does not seem to be any easy option, I might head over to the brother's broadband, pay my fare, and download like crazy.

A few questions for the GTI owners if you don't mind:

A few years ago I bought a Golf r-line (just the trim spec) after I fell in love with the styling and build quality. It was a 1.2 comfortline/highline type spec. I thought it was a good purchase but I quickly came to hate it :( The seats were terrible, the drive and handling were 'boring' to say the least, and although the 1.2L was nippy with the turbo, it was way too underpowered. I had the blinkers on when I bought it, no doubt. Had to sell it a year later and go back to a 3 series. You learn from your mistakes!

However the GTI has always caught my eye, especially the Mk7 I think it's stunning. It's coming time to change and although I said I'd never get another Golf, I can't escape the feeling I need to try the GTI.

    - What's the handling like compared to the regular Golf models? More sporty or around the same? I don't expect it to match a RWD 3 series but I would want it to be an enjoyable drive.

    - What are the seats like, is there an option for the side supports to inflate/extend? My biggest gripe with the seating of my original golf was the side supports were too far apart and I wasn't comfortably held in place like the 3 series.

    - Do you reckon the GTI is more of a thief magnet?

Hi there, sorry for just joining in on your convo, I am the owner of a beautiful mk7 gti,
12000km on the clock the car has never missed a beat so far.
It's a fantastic car to drive , handles the standard power no problem through the front wheels.but to be honest rearwheel drive is more fun.I had mine on the dyno in December it put out 234bhp, that's fast. In February I got a revo remap . AMAZING, it's where I think the gti should be. Golf's are a solid car , cabin has everything where it should be. Bucket seats are excellent. Mine puts a smile on my face everyday.

Did you put it on the dyno in Feb after the remap? What bhp is it getting now?

I spent the Easter weekend shooting the new 7.5 Golf R for Volkswagen, which was my first extended amount of time with one. I've previously driven the 7R on track, a modified 7R in the UK (~380HP on Bilstein suspension, Tarox brakes etc.), a MK7 GTI, a MK7 GTI Performance Pack and MK7 GTI Clubsport. I daily drive a modified MK6 GTI (~275hp).

First impressions are how refined the MK7.5 is, compared to the MK6 at least. I'd have to drive them back to back to give you a proper comparison versus the MK7, but it was impressive none the less. The car I drove was a 5 door, manual with 19-inch black Pretorias and the 171 Pack.

Secondly, how bloody fast it is. I don't consider my own car slow, but the MK7.5 R is the next level again, how it just keeps pulling is something else. It was my first time driving an R on proper Irish roads, as the UK drive was mostly on motorway and dual carriageways so that maybe added to sensation of speed.

The facelift additions to the car are all very nice. The digital dash, the large centre touchscreen with CarPlay and the new lights are all those little things that really bring the Golf into the future. I don't consider the MK7 to be aged, but these are all worthwhile upgrades that make the experience feel that little bit more premium.

For me, the GTI Clubsport is still top of the ladder when it comes to Volkswagen's fast offerings. It's an amazing driver's car, and maybe the best thing you can buy this side of a Porsche GT3. I do like the R and realistically, I hope that one will be next car in a couple of years time. The opportunity to spend some time in one and do some decent mileage under a variety of circumstances has been a huge insight into Golf R life.

The black is nice when it's clean...which is about 1% of the time.

Lovely car but black on black doesn't do a lot for it IMO, looks a bit tacky. The interior changes are really nice though.

I'm quite partial to the "new" Indium grey, I think that'll suit it very well. I say "new" because it's only new to the Golf.

I'm surprised they did a press car R with a manual box in it.

Great pics though Paddy and nice to read your thoughts on it also. Cheers.

The manual car is in a higher tax bracket too which will push even more towards DSG.

Talk in the UK of the Performance Pack not being available till week 35. This makes me sad! Been wanting to order one since December. Hopefully it doesn't turn out to be that long.

Great pics Paddy. How does the R compare to the Clubsport S?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Hebegeebee

According to this thread on UK GTi forum, the GTi-PP will be available to order in the UK a week ahead (27/Apr) of its original forecast date (4/May). But it seems wait times on GTi builds are crazy long already (19wks for Manual, 21wks for DSG).

    http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=280261.msg2563639#msg2563639

Has anyone heard anything from Irish dealers??

Wait times in the UK have always been bad. I wouldn't read too much into it, it bears little or no relation to wait times here unless there's a specific shortage of some part(s). When the MK7 GTI first launched, UK customers were waiting 5-6 months for delivery. It's always been in or around 10-12 weeks here.

I've only driven the non-S Clubsport, and it remains my favourite FWD car of all time. The Clubsport feels like a more special car (especially with the Recaros) but in the real world, the R is likely going to be the faster of the two. The Clubsport is the more involved drive, however.

Of what I've drove in the past, it goes: Clubsport > R > GTI PP > GTI > GTE

Just met a 171 white club sport on the road today outside Castlebar. Looked great on the road.
