I try not to look at the UK deals too much - pretty sickening to see how they stack up to prices here between lack of competition and VRT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 147 ✭✭st332

    For the UK:
Available to order from today and an updated price list will be available on the 3rd of May.

Can I be an honorary member here now... I have Golf R drivetrain, hidden under a Skoda badge. I am amazed at how well the car handles and corners... it just sticks to the road.

Very nice spec you have there mloc123, get up a few photos. Have you tried launch control yet?

Does it have the DCC suspension?

I didn't spec DCC on it, it was an extra and at around €1500 I didn't consider it long. Golf R comes with DCC as standard right?

No launch control test yet, I am being mostly sensible and sticking to the recommended "don't redline it" until after 1000km run in guidelines. Just 500km to go...

    Nope. Around €1100 extra.

I'm not a big believer in this "running in" craic. It's a bit old school. Once the car's warmed up, launch away I reckon.

I know.. I know. I spent the 10 weeks waiting for the car to be delivered reading the two sides to this :D AFAIK the Skoda manual says 1000km run in while the VW manual doesn't...

The only running in I did on mine was to not go over 5k rpm for the first 1000kms. I used full throttle during that time and manual mostly for engine braking to seat the rings.

Whether it made any difference who knows, 15k Kms on the car now and it hasn't used a drop of oil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

    Mine neither, at 23k kms.

My previous car (MK7 GTI) used a very little bit (topped it up < 1 litre between services). My MK5 GTI several years ago had a serious appetite for it... I always had to have a spare litre in the boot! Dealers told me it was normal.

I also had a MK5 and I missed a heartbeat one evening in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny when the yellow oil light came on. Rang my VW dealer and he told me to relax - apparently it was normal for that enging to sip a drop of oil. Also, my 2016 A4 1.4 TFSI likes to use a drop of oil, I had to have it topped up a couple of times over tha past few months.

MyGti's original post indicates a Revo remap

So from 234 to 311 is pretty damn decent for presumably a Stage 1 map.

    Sorry if I'm thick.

But are we talking about an engine remap to get that Bhp increase?

How the much would that increase your insurance premium?

Yes you are correct it would be a remap.

And the insurance question is the tougher part, it can go from a couple/few hundred maybe, to the other end of the scale and making your car uninsurable. Irish insurers don't like modifications and most run for the hills if they're mentioned, they're also not set up to handle them so unless you get someone on the other end of the phone who doesn't just follow the script, you won't have any luck. If you get passed hurdle 1, then usually the underwriters are the next hurdle that will shut you down.

Your best bet is to be with one of the bigger insurers and be with them for more than months, so years realistically. Then it's always best to have a decent history of performance cars that they can see on their system etc... and then it's somewhat easier to broach the subject with them, but still in no way guaranteed that you'll get anywhere.

Or you could just do what a lot of people here are forced to, and not say anything to anyone....

I see VW have started to roll out the 172 offers on their website. 0% finance on the Highline anyway - it's not clear if that applies to the performance versions.
And an improved version of App Connect - "Volkswagen Connect" which gives you the ability to control things in your car remotely from your phone. I've seen BMW's version of this before (e.g. set the aircon to come on remotely) and it's a nice touch.

    still no 1.5tsi engine yet!

I see the r line exterior is no longer half price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 147 ✭✭st332

The 1.5 TSI engine and the GTI Performance Pack engine are both available in the UK, but only since the end of last week.
Had a chat with my local dealer who expects them to be available here in the next few days, but nothing confirmed yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Updated product guides are probably not out yet...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭kooga

    uk one here

The 1.5 tsi is in two outputs 130bhp and 150bhp

the 150 bhp has lower co2 than the outgoing 1.4 150bhp so road tax back down to 200€.

I suspect a price increase over the outgoing 1.4

I hope st332's dealer is right! At the weekend my local VW dealer said June for the Performance Pack. They're obviously all not singing from the same hymn sheet.

I don't think he has a notion! Either a bulletin comes in from VW Ireland saying they are avilalble or it doesn't, the dealers don't seem to have a huge amount of visibility. I'm hoping it will be sooner than later as they will surely be looking to get the new 1.5 TSI engine on the market and it will hopefully get rolled into the same pricing update. All wild speculation though!

For those not wanting the performance or expense of the GTI or R, a Highline Golf with the 1.5 tsi @150bhp and DSG transmission should be a very nice drive imo.

Isn't this already available through car net?

No not really. The carnet in my own car isn't worth a fcuk. Does very little of any use. I think the GTE has some of these features alright but no other model does.

Likewise, car net in out mk7 is shocking. I know in the current Passat and Tiguan you can remotely lock and unlock the car through car net and open the windows, then on the headlights and other stuff like that through the car net app.

With the rise in cybercrime, this is a disaster waiting to happen! Have we gotten that lazy now that we need this kinda crap to entice us as buyers. I personally have no interest in this stuff and feel it will only make the car less secure.

I was at the London Motor show yesterday and a guy from Thatcham was talking about the future of car technology and mentioned that manufacturers were really worried about 2 things; autonomous driving and cybercrime.

    161 r estate

New Irish price lists are up, dated 2nd May, but they don't contain the GTI Performance nor the new 1.5 L TSI Golf, both of which went on sale in the UK on the 27th April

Must have been brought in from the UK as it hasn't been sold new here. The germans usually make great looking estates but for me the Golf isn't one of them.
