George is entitled to a free tv licence. In the past he has blamed 'The Lovely Ingrid' for not filling out some form meaning he has to pay for a licence. Can he not reapply? I know its just an excuse to give out about tv licences but it wouldnt surprise me if he did have a free one.

George rants about the TV licence & ignores that Pat Kenny had a long & totally one sided, discussion minutes before.

Then the same thing with United Airlines.

Sean O Rourke only gave it 2 mins before closing the show.

The tv licence discussion was longer. George totally ignored the poor publicity point

Ever since Trump was elected he seems much more amiable. I knew George was going to be pro the airline as Micheal Grahams twitter is anti it.

Imagine if this had happened on Georges beloved aer lingus:eek:

Ugh. The annual holier than thou Good Friday schtick from Newstalk.

Here's the thing. The oft repeated "can we not do without drink for one day"? argument is something of a straw man.

If it was, say, Good Tuesday, nobody would give a rats ass. People like to have a drink on Friday after a week of work. Why they should be denied the same right to do this that they have every other week is really more the point.

If you want people not to drink as much then open the pubs. I'd say the off licences are happy that the pubs are closed tomorrow.

Hook is just a professional contrarian and wind-up merchant these days. Listening to him trying to defend United Airlines the other day was pathetic.

personally ill miss it. been a rite of passage for generations to figure out how to get around it / find a lock in. and NOTHING tastes as nice as a sneaky illegal pint.

we'll miss those skills down the road.

I won't miss it, because finally we won't have to listen to the annual nonsensical debate where there is literally no reasonable, logical point in favour of retaining the ban. Literally.

Yates standing in for Hook. Saying Irish doesn't count as a second language because it's not foreign, then goes on to say it was foreign to some in Dublin. Those on the Northside. Jeez, give us back our Hook. To think that this guy was a government minister!

I like Yates, he was probably trying to trigger Irish speakers which isnt to hard to do.

Widely acknowledged as one of the best Ag Ministers ever too.

Imagine George covering this, Patriotism would be flying and he might even again repeat that Irish is the easiest language to learn in the world.

I think outrage and reactionary texts are a big part of the midday show

I thought Ivan was excellent today, sure he was stirring it a bit :)but thought he was far superior to Ciara Kelly.

And far superior to anyone they on the Breakfast Show and Drive. It's a waste having him on only Sundays.

Yates was a breath of fresh air. So nice to have interesting interviews where the guest is allowed to speak

Ivan on about the public service pay and pensions again. While the unions may need to cop on with their demands I don't think Ivan Yeats is in any position to lecture people given he is a case study of everything that is wrong in both the public and private sectors.

    It's a different programme entirely.

It's suddenly an engaging current affairs show, as opposed to two hours of wishy washy "opinion" based trolling.

Never thought I'd call Ivan Yates a good broadcaster but when put side by side with Aul Gaaaaaarge in the same context there's no contest

Could Ivan find a permanent home here when George shuffles off the stage?

Jeez, such a brutal line for the Alan Kelly interview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,015 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

Ivan combines the old fashioned feel but unlike George, he is intelligent & interested & open to the response of his guests

The Sunday show is leaden, a waste of the listener's time.

I still like George but I'm not a fan of many of the slots on the show (the girls, essential songs, ciara kelly are all terrible). The music thing is a good idea but George has no interest in it at all. At least they got rid of the food tasting one where he refused to try anything!!

They should stick George on Saturday and Sunday morning and put Ivan in his place.

Did I hear him say he was filling in next week too?

I don't know, health permitting, George is going to be there for a good while yet and despite what I might think of him he does have an audience. Yates will take over breakfast or Drive. It's just a case of when and which one.

I wouldn't disagree, the format isn't great. Having politicians in for the news review never really works. They're too interested in point scoring and slavishly following the party line to be of any interest. Having almost an hour of sport just before OTB is also a bit pointless.

    Has he said so?

I'm not sure, but he doesn't give the impression that he is leaving anytime soon.
