Suck on that Kerry and Dublin, we're coming for ye.

Daly made a massive difference when he came on.

If they got a goal there it would have been our own fault.

We let them advance the ball to our goal under no pressure... Don't get the logic in that.

Conroy has great Irish. Is he a teacher?

Have you ever posted anything positive about this Galway team . We're after winning a cup in croke park give it a rest

The team yes, the management no as they're holding us back and that was their call to concede possession.

It's a discussion forum so head off, I can't take anyone serious who names themselves after an English football team.

Congrats to the lads. Driving back from the airport but sounded like Sweeney, FOC and Kyne had stormers. Saw Daly's point when I got him and he will be some man for us.

That's the first time I've ever heard a captain have to ask the supporters "please stay with us for the rest of year" in a victory speech. Probably a reflection on the growing popularity of Connaught rugby in Galway, they've gotten very popular. Was disappointing to hear from a GAA fans perspective

Id say we might refrain from dropping Conroy maybe after his motm today! Is there a higher scoring midfielder in Ireland? You take his 2-3 pts from play a game for granted at times

Well done the maroon and white!
Croke park hoodo finally broken. Serious firepower up front if we can harness it correctly
Meehan didn't return for nothing .Big vote of confidence in the team!!

Kyne gets alot of stick but when it comes to the basics of defending hes the best we have. Absolutely text book shadowing and deft dispossessions.

So much silly stuff that if they cleaned it up we'd have a right good team. Great to finally see a serious bench even if the vast majority are forwards. If we develop a few defenders in the next two years we'll be in excellent shape.

Nice to put the Croke Park hoodoo to bed. 16 years was a ridiculous amount of time to be without a win there. There's positive stirrings in Galway football at the moment which is good to see after a lot of bad years. The bench really made the difference today which was good to see.

Honestly though moving forward, we're further away than ever from nailing down the centre back position. Farragher doesn't work there and while Bradshaw made an impact off the bench you can't realistically start him there. Cathal Sweeney looked like he was going to be a great find for us a couple of years back but he was ripped apart again today as he has been in the games previous which I saw. Big questions as to how management left him on and it almost cost us very dearly at the end. I have grave concerns over Kyne against a big team but he played a big part in the victory today.

Conroy had a big game today. I'd be a critic but in general he's had a good league.

Again on the kickouts when Kildare squeezed us we found it hard to get possession for a long spell while we gave them free ball off every kick out bar one or two. There's huge scope for improvement on that performance but to win when it looked like Kildare were in charge at one point is a good sign and there seems to be a bit more resilience in the side than other years. Heads don't drop immediately when we go down a few points.

We've ticked off a good few boxes this spring but we'll have to up it significantly to put it up to a Mayo side who will be fully primed for the clash later in the summer.

It's no secret Galway is a sunshine fan county, especially in the football, I'm sure the players are aware. They had very little support for years until now.

Contrast that plea with Fionn Fitzgerald thanking the Kerry fans after their win.

Neither do I. Think it was just a generic the year isn't over yet and we still have more matches so stick with us type of thing. I'd say rugby was the last thing in his head.

Do they have any more support this year than last? I really dont think so. Nothing substantially more anyway. I think we need to get a bit better for the sunshine supporters to emerge :)

The Galway management deserve a lot of credit today. They made a crucial change at the start by dropping McHugh and putting an extra defender back. To me, it looked like Heaney was instructed to play as sweeper and when he broke forward, Brannigan automatically dropped back. Last week did show up McHugh a little bit - there were very few frees and therefore he was not contributing much. The same today - Kildare did not give away many frees that you would want McHugh to be on. The full back line has been a disaster in this league and they tried to address that today.

They also made the right subs at the right times. Daly coming on was exactly what the team needed at that time, and they have handled his involvement with the U-21's extremely well (looking from the outside anyway). Bradshaw looked way hungrier coming on today than he did earlier in the league when he was starting as well.

There was a discussion earlier on in this thread about Galway's forward line in the summer. Today, Galway set up their forwards way differently to what we saw in the league to date. Basically, we played 14 men behind the ball with Armstrong as the sole player ahead of the ball. If they set up like that in summer, there will be no Cummins v Armstrong debate - Comer will be the advanced forward without a question. And the remaining forward positions will be filled by half forwards (Daly, Walsh, Sice, Brannigan).

Probably, the most worrying thing is that the Galway management did not try this system until the final.

i think most counties are sunshine counties nowadays , mayo kerry and dublin all bring huge support because they are there and there abouts

galway ane a team on the move in the right direction , baby steps today breaks the croke park hoodoo that will stand to them later in the year i have no doubt , i think he was telling people not to get too far ahead of themselves just yet , i will probably get killed for saying it but i think a year or two in the top flight before a real title challenge comes your way ye have the makings of a very good team

I would agree completely. There is a gulf in class between the top teams in D1 and the top teams in D2. That was glaringly obvious today. But I think we can be competitive in D1 - we should be able to give a good game to the likes of Tyrone, Monaghan, Mayo, Kildare. I think we can survive there next year and if we survive, that will be a great building block for this team that (for the most part) are still very young.

Ah this Galway team is most definitely going in the right direction, very impressed the way they pushed on in the second half.Good substitutions.

I fear the Mayo hegemony in Connacht will end soon.

    Yeah that's about it .
Hopefully we can stay up for a season and build on that. the difference between div 1 and 2 was obvious today.
Galway have the bones of a serious football team now though and history tells us they don't usually wait around making up the numbers if they are capable of more.

no on the basis of what came down from division 1 i wouldnt worry , probably will need a better kick out strategy then today but everything else fine good set of forwards and to be fair when under pressure late on very good defensivly , confidance is probably the only thing missing , next year will bring that

Can we play Kildare every time please !!! :) I cannot remember ever losing to the Lillies. (they must really hate US ??)

Great to get a win in Croke Park again. The glory days of the turn of the Millennium are a distant memory but they might just be back again soon.

Think we are definitely heading in the right direction ....maybe even fair to say that we are a top 5 team now. A few little things to sort out but when you have pacy free scoring forwards you have a chance of winning any game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭RobbieRuns

I would not get too carried away by that win................. keep a sense of realism here. We are not at the top level yet, it was Div 2 final.

    Great win, enjoy, move on.

Dublin, Kerry, Mayo, Tyrone, Monaghan, Donegal. That's a clear top 6 anyway. Cavan got relegated but far from disgraced themselves in Division 1. Don't forget Tipp have won Division 3 and also humiliated Galway last year and ran Kerry close enough in Championship too. They have every right to claim to be a better side. Although tight margins I'll admit. I'm a Mayo man admittedly, so I know all about how a county can get carried away. There are signs of it in Galway at the moment with comments like "fair to say we are a top 5 team now". Galway could count another Quarter Final appearance this year as a very successful year IMO.

Dont think we are top 5 anyway. Probably top 8 as I think most fans would be disappointed not to reach an AI Q/F. If we lose to Mayo, it should still be possible to get to a Q/F. Getting beyond a Q/F would be a big ask as it would probably mean beating a Dublin / Kerry / Tyrone I guess. If the draw worked out favourably though and we came up against a Cork or Kildare in the Q/F, I would be hopeful of us getting into a semi. There would probably be no avoiding the big guns at semi final stage so thats as far as I could possibly see us getting.
