Do we have promotion secured with that win?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Worthwent14

No, need a draw at least next week to secure promotion

    Kildare are promoted.

No reason we should be losing that game next week, they're no world beaters with their starting 15 and will likely give the subs a run.

Clare could even get a result against Meath, they've been competitive in every game.

Fingers crossed we get a double header next Sunday, would draw a huge crowd.

Has anyone a list of subs from the match programme from today's game?

Unofficially, playing Waterford in hurling next week. Toss for venue I think.

Won't be a better chance of promotion. Kildare and Galway have been the most consistent teams in this division. No excuses not to to close it out next Sunday.

Next weekend is a big one. u21s Connacht Final and big games for the footballers and hurlers.

Galway beating Limerick did them zero good in the end, a loss would have given them a home quarter final against Cork, as it is its 50/50 whether we are home or away to Waterford.

But it has if the rumours turn out to be true that the GAA will decide to restructure Division 1 next year and turn it into an 8-team group, in which case Wexford and Galway would be included (and Limerick won't be).

If they do it would obviously benefit us but would make a mockery of the whole thing. Rules like that need to be changed before the season starts so everyone knows what they are playing for from the start of the year.

    Oh I totally agree.
But this is the GAA of course we're talking about.

Good win for the footballers. They were under pressure after the red card but they composed themselves.

Shane Walsh popped over some serious scores in the first half. Gary Sice had a big second half.

Full back line destroyed again. I think he has to try Hanley there next week. Not much point in having an experienced full back on your bench and never using him.
They should persevere with Farragher at number 6 experiment. He's a very intelligent player.

Was down in Limerick and think we were flattered by the win. Joe Cooney had a shocker, Flaherty was never really in the match and isn't the grafter that Donoghue fancies him as, we shat the bed under any high ball until McInerney and Killeen were moved out to the right and cleaned up.

Dowling was hitting scores for fun and still not getting fed enough ball. Hickey destroyed Joe Cooney.

That said it was Canning's first great match since Tipp. David Burke is probably our best player now. Killeen, McInerney and Tuohy tightened our backs a lot in the second.

My major worry is how out of form Flynn is. We already have Whelan slacking off, Joe Cooney is really inconsistent so coming championship we've likely 3 holes in our scoring.

Footballers decent. Kick outs a lot better, goalie took a few more risks with 20-30 yard short kicks to free backs and it worked well. Full back line crap again under high ball and kyne was stupid. Thought Sice was by far and away the best player on the park

Sice was very good, particularly in the period just after the red card and we came under a bit of pressure.

Flynn out of form since '15 really. Still young enough (and season early enough) to turn it around. Disappointed with Joe Cooney; again, thought last year was nearly his best for Galway and hoped he would push on from that. On the flip side, Tom Monaghan, despite current lack of physique, could be a real good 'un for the future, always impressed by his honesty and application. Not good news re: Whelan and Daithi, reading between the lines , was thinking something was going on. Have to cop themselves on,the former in particular by what I hear.

I also use Hoganstand Match tracker on my phone as well as @TribesmenGAA.
Keep hitting the Refresh button. That way you can keep up to date with all the matches

Yep. Monaghan is a good man for catching the ball and took his point well.

The talk about Whelan and Burke seems to be that their heart isn't there this year. Punished for boozing.

All they did was go for a few drinks on Paddy's day. At the end of the day this is an amateur sport so I think it's a bit ridiculous to ban them. We didn't have a game that weekend did we?

Nah it is absolutely crazy that's a dropable offense. We had a clubman dropped by the footballers for having a single pint during the League once.

Double header in the Stadium Sunday. 2pm for Kildare game and 4 for the Waterford.

How does that work for season ticket holders? Will hurling season ticket holders go through stile while football goes through another?

They can scan both tickets for you at the stile or you can give one to someone and they can get in for free too

    Praise the Lord.

Was dreading the thought of going to Salthill and trying to take the hurling in(recording if it was going to be 2).

I read someone say a double header might attract 7000.... what were they on, there was 7000 at the Wexford game and we were 1/3 to win that.
They brought a healthy crowd but there was at least 5000 home fans.

I'd expect 8-9k for the hurling and with the footballers playing for promotion that'll likely attract 5-7k.

Let's hope the weather holds up.

On the lads drinking... personally I think these bans are ridiculous.
These guys are unpaid and I've came across Connacht players playing beer bong... which is excessive drinking.

Even AFL players go out after matches and their ability doesn't seem diminished.

I think that aspect of GAA needs to be eradicated.

Drinks on Sunday/Monday allowed, outside of that probably pushing it to close to the game.

What I'd find a greater concern is that I saw one of that duo playing in a 5 a side soccer league midweek recently... thought it was folly on his part to do that mid-season. I'd view that more serious than drinking tbh.

Barry McHugh has been some asset throughout the league, kicked one free yesterday he had absolutely no right to be even getting near the posts. Slotted a 45 straight afterwards, at important times. So handy being ahead in the second half having him to settle everything (take a minute or two off the clock rightly or wrongly) and keep the scoreboard ticking. I can't see him making a championship team, he doesn't offer enough from play yet for summer football but he'll be very very handy in low scoring league games for years to come and may well progress into a championship starter having not played any inter county football at all up until this year.

Reminds me a bit of Dean Rock. Rock was really only useful for frees for quite a while but in fairness to him he started contributing a few more scores from play over the past year for Dublin. McHugh in a similiar position. Great on frees but will need to keep tipping over a point or two from play as well to keep his place.

I am delighted he got a run in the league this year as he was superb in the club championship for Mountbellew last year. One of my biggest criticisms of Walsh in the years gone by was that he did not give lads who were playing well for their clubs a real chance. I could certainly not criticise him for that this year. Lads like McHugh & Armstrong had exceptional club championships last year and were worth a look at in the league.

Regarding McHugh, he is one of the best free takers I have seen in a long time. His technique is effortless and the ball usually saunters over the bar with a fair bit to spare. However, he is still not contributing enough from general play. He is that little bit light and seems to be pushed off the ball a little too easily. In saying that, he is still in his early 20's and could bulk up a little in the next couple of years yet.

Based on the league matches so far, it is hard to say what our starting forward line come championship will be. I think we have 3 definite starters in Daly, Comer & Shane Walsh. I havent heard much of Comer so hopefully he will be back soon. The other 3 positions are somewhat up for grabs. I have been hugely impressed by Brannigan in the last 2 games - he covers some amount of ground and has a major engine. Personally, I'd be playing him at 12. Probably needs to hold back on some wild shots though.

The backs are a guessing game to who will start come championship. Against Derry, we had a full back line of Burke, Walsh, Sweeney. For the Down match, that changed to Wynne, Kyne, Sweeney. Wynne was taken off at start of second half while Kyne was sent off! So does he go back to the full back line that was slaughtered against Derry?

Hope im wrong but find it hard to see Kevin being adventurous enough to start both Walsh and Daly in championship. Sice/Walsh/Brannigan with Comer/Cummins inside and 3 midfielders is my best guess. I'd love to see Daly at CF and Walsh left up top with Comer

    I think you'll be wrong :-)

I guess next weeks team will tell us if he intends to start both.

Daly has probably been our best player in this league campaign

Lundy is looking like someone who might miss out. Hasn't really had a great league campaign. Not really discovered the form of a few years ago yet. Might have to settle for coming off the bench. Armstrong I think has shown he just doesn't have the legs for intercounty anymore. Doesn't have the burst to get away from anyone. Looks like another bench option.
