3 done your wife a favour, she now has an unlocked phone and can move to any plans she wants. Surely this is a good thing?

Yeah seems odd that this person added I hope they get stung badly. Their wife got a brand new phone on contract and only paid like 2 months of rental? Pretty sure 3 lost money on her there, and now she is free from a contract. I'd be thanking 3 in that case!

    Anyway each to their own

I will pay EUR125 by my end of contract (5 months done on a 24 month contract). My phone would cost EUR269 to buy sim free.
My wife has cancelled her Three contract after 8 months.
The person in Three who made a decision to break customers contracts should be sacked.
I hope Three shuts down in Ireland.
    Three is a disgraceful company.

I'd hate to know what you think of Virgin. They do this every single year.

It is funny to see such hate for Three from people who have gone with them, many of which seem to be repeat customers. I fully accept that they are far from the best in customer service and at times coverage, however their pricing and data allowances over the years has had an effect of reducing prices in the overall market. Think of it as the Ryanair effect, another company that people love to hate, but will happily buy their dirt cheap seats when a promo comes about.

i have to say for all their faults the actual customer service agents at three have always been extremely friendly and helpful whenever I've rung.

You don't think it's a little snakey to be signing people up for contracts one month under the guise of a special offer and then trying to increase those contracts the next month by up to 20% in some cases? Three are relying on people not knowing any better and just accepting the bump.

The reason I hope it stings them badly is to prevent an Insurance Industry style spiral of costs. Ireland already has comparatively high costs and lengthy contracts. Anything that makes a global conglomerate think twice before imposing a 20% blanket increase on the irish market is a good thing for the consumer IMO. But as you said, each to their own.

There's plenty of €20/month payg options available. You don't have to go on an expensive, lengthy contract.

To get a tier 1 or 2 phone you generally do unless you can afford 400 to 700 euro cash injection to get the phone sim free.

You don't have to use the latest, most expensive phone if you can't afford it. 3 still have reasonable prices, and we're free to shop around for cheaper deals if we want.

Just wondering if anyone has received a call back from three regarding their cancelled contract? I got a call from Dublin yesterday from one of the customer service agents throwing a few decent offers at me to reconsider cancelling.

It's not about affording it. If you want top tier phones and can afford them then you typically have to go bill pay or stump up a large cash injection at once. You're arguing a point I'm not making.

You're right. I don't even know if you have a point.

My point is that 3 changing terms allows you to have a choice of doing whatever you want. The consumer is benefitting in this case, but some people want to put a negative spin on it.

If all of the mobile phone companies push up their prices, then fair enough. Right now, Vodafone and Meteor are offering better deals than they were a month or two ago. It's only Ireland's cheapest, slowest, least reliable network that has pushed up prices so far.

    Time will tell.

Things change. Three are doing this because of the upcoming EU directive which means they would be financially crucified by people using AYCE data in Europe.

They sent out letters to let you know it is going up and have the option to cancel without penalty.

I don't know what more they can do.
Some people will still not bother.

It's not, Think of this logically. Would you say that is snakey if they did it 18 months into the 24 months? Your wife was on month 2, but there are people on month 7, or month 22 etc. I see what you are saying, but in actual fact, your Wifes contract was changed by three therefore she could leave. the fact that it is month 2 or whatever is irrelavent as everyone is on different contract lengths.

As op said, what would you like them to do instead? They allow you to leave the network WITH the phone. Your wife got a bargain. She literally got a free phone out of a phone call to the network. Three have effectively turned around and said we need to increase the cost of the rental by €5 but if you don't agree, then that's cool. keep the phone out of goodwill.

Car Insurance is compulsory - a phone contract is not. Costs won't spiral out of control. I promise I am not having a go, but you are jumping a head a bit. End of the day, your wife got a free phone.

I don't see how you have any negative things to say about the network besides a cheeky " thank you three". I mean, it's not as if you even had to fight for your rights. Three even took out newspaper adverts to tell customers of this!

Speaking of deals, I encountered a guy last night that bought an iPhone 7 plus 256GB and got out of his contract. He moved to tesco. That phone he got for 300 euro, so basically three lost 700 euro there alone.

I got a letter from 3 but when I rang up to cancel my contract they said no! Anyone else having this problem?

I upgraded on March 1st and ported from O2 in a Carphone Warehouse store. I wasnt informed of any planned price increases at the time.

When I phoned 3 to cancel as per their letter, 3 told me to go back to the store because they should have told me about the price hike. The store told me that they couldnt have told me about the price hikes because 3 didnt notify them until a few days after I upgraded and also said that some customers who took out contracts at the end of Feb are also having similar problems to me.

So, Im stuck in the middle at the moment with 3 refusing to honour the letter that they sent me. Im conscious that time is running out. Has anyone managed to resolve this with 3 and if so how did you go about it?

What does the letter actually say? Does it say you previously informed or is it like every other letter whereby your told of the planned increased and you are deemed to have accepted the charges by doing nothing?

I got a call today, said 'hi but ive cancelled' and they were going to suggest 'what they could do for me'. I said i had already moved so the guy couldnt be bothered to fight a lost cause and closed the call.

the missus just went online on chat, was on the 40 euro per month bill.

first they offered a free months rental to stay,,, when she said no, they came ack with this cracker of a deal.

"We can move your price plan to sim only, I’ll remove the current contract and this will be a 30 day rolling price plan. The price is €30 and you get unlimited call, texts, All you can eat data in Ireland and 2GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts to use in any EU country."

no bad at all, it was more than they offered me, the feckers. coud have done with all that travel minutes

There is a good deal for public sector workers...less than twenty quid for free calls and texts to any network or landline at any time and also 5 gb of data.
You have to contact one particular guy about it though - george@threegovstaff.com ...the call centre staff won't tell you about this...I had it all set up and then I cancelled my contract. Saving 20 quid per month.

They contacted me today trying to get me back on contract. Lovely lady but seems bizarre. Was even willing to match price I was on before the hike. They must be regretting the decision if they're already trying to win back lost customers. Madness.

I thought the eu roaming was standard for anyone that went on the €30/month SIM only plan, at least that's what I was told. Doesn't come into effect until April, though.
