One is an overflow and the other is a breather.
There should be be a hose on each one.
Can you blow through it to see if it is free?

There was a hose on each, I can blow through both fairly easily, the rusted up one less so but definitely can blow through it. I'm assuming that one would be the breather and the other the overflow, since the overflow one had petrol flow through it after I flipped the tank a few times

Obviously something to do with thermal expansion, my money is on the gear position sensor or the wiring too it.
How does the starter motor sound\work when the engine is cold, strong and healthy?

    Cranks like normal,seems healthy.

stewy could your battery be weak while the fans are on and once they're off the bike has enough juice to do all the usual safety checks before allowing it to be turned over?

What sort of voltage should I be getting with the ignition switched on but no cranking?

Around 12.2 wIth the ignition on.
12.7 is with the ignition ff.
And anywhere up to 14.4 when running.

Neutral switch: Is it a basic switch or a gear indicator switch?
If a basic switch - and you can access it without third degree burns - disconnect the wire and earth it. If the light works then the problem is the switch.

And the problem with the R1 was a weak battery, and a fubared gear position sensor aswell.

So went and ordered a new sensor and washer off Danfay today and will have it for Thursday.

That CapriMoto crowd are great to deal with,2-3 day delivery from Italy to Ireland with UPS.

Also got my GPS switch from Danfay.

And got an APE manual cam chain adjuster for the S1000rr off Ebay,80 euro posted to my doorstep.

Upgrading the driving light to factory BMW LED's and these guys had the best prices even with shipping to the states.
The lights were not in stock but they had them within two days, total time with ordering and shipping to the states was about seven days

And my something I did to my bike today was... Dropped it. My own fault was being lazy, was taking it down of the centre stand, but didnt clear space to the side so was quite squashed up to the bike. As soon as the bike came off the stand, it and me went over. No damage, apart from a dint to my pride. Bike is a 03, so not without scratches, can't spot any new ones.
As drops do go, was a good outcome.

I clay bared my Harley Street Glide and then used Maguires paint restoration on it. I did a side by side with one of the luggage cases and you could see a shade difference even though they're black. Well worth the time and effort if anyone has tired looking paint.

I rode my moped to Cotters, got slagged over it by some of the lads n lasses who turned up for the open day,and bought oil and coolant for the R1.

Yeah man i love doing a cleaning treatment like that. It brings paint up amazing. I use their paint cleaner and then wax and the finish on the paint is like a mirror

    Lads,Im an idiot.

I thought the steering damper on the s1000rr was an OEM non adjustable damper.
Turns out its an Ohlins SD38 18 way fully adjustable one.
So I bought a 2016 S1000rr damper and fitting kit for no reason then.

    D'oh.:pac::o

Bearing cage broken up. High miles on that cush drive? Bearing replacement should be handy enough. Can you drive it out from the other side?

Bearings out now and everything cleaned up. New bearings will be got tomorrow. I will get sealed bearings.
Also gonna replace the bearings in rear wheel while I am at it for peace if mind.

It's an 09 with about 70k km on it so they could be the original

new tools arrived including 16mm spark plug socket, took out the back cylinder plug to have a look
    413217.jpg

    413218.jpg

I'll take the front plug out tomorrow because there's a bit of work to do with moving the rad to get access. But i'd say it will be in an awful state from the water hitting it.

could my rough running be solved by replacing these.. we will wait and see

I'm gona place 10 euros on stewy being a lottery winner, judging by posts he doesn't work as he is always riding during the day/night/24/7 and if there is a part to change/upgrade or a way someone can do something to it that costs money be it an oil change, brake pad change or filling a tyre with air he will pay for it and more. Basically if there is a way to spend money stewy will spend it.

Mate i would say they lick their lips when you come on no joke you are putting kids through school.

YouTube is your friend for doing more to your bike than an oil and filter change every 25 miles.

With sealed bearings I am inclined to pop out one of the rubber seals and pack a little more grease in the bearing. Not completely full but just a few more dollops.
Its a contentious topic, not everyone agrees with doing it but as wheel bearings spin relatively slowly I prefer to ensure they have more grease than they come with from the factory.
