Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin said that Cardinal Connell, who had been ill for some time, passed away peacefully during the night in his sleep.

Well for him - peaceful nights didn't come easily for some of his churches victims like Michael O'Brien for example!

I'd imagine the wave of disappointment now hitting him when he realises his whole career was a waste of time would be something to behold.

Is this the atheist equivalent of Gaybo's "suppose it's all true"? :-)

Potentially better than the alternative for him.

The very same Cardinal that went to the high court to prevent an Irish state inquiry from examining files concerned with clerical child abuse while he was in charge of the church in Dublin.

He ignored victims' allegations of abuse and failed to act against priests accused of paedophile activities.

    No loss.

I was kind of implying he is going to hell, but shure I suppose there could be nothing also.

Well he's dead, so he actually won't know anything.

That's the problem with religious folk, impossible their life long beliefs are total rubbish when they die. As if you could prove it then there is a form of afterlife. Quite a paradox.

Doctors described his condition as satisfactory.

I'm no Doctor, but I would also describe his condition as satisfactory. At least, I cant be hit with the "'don't be cruel, that was somebodys father' argument".......  or could I?

Well he was a father at some point.

There's a Highway to Hell and a Stairway to Heaven, says a lot about the anticipated travel numbers. His bus has left.

Very hard to say anything good about the man, his legacy will be his cover up of child abuse and the protection of monsters all for the good of his church. How can anyone overlook that to pay some respect I don't know. I'm sure in typical Irish fashion it will make the news and there will be fawning and platitudes but those of us who were affected by his actions will never forget.

I suppose this is the end of this thread then.

just to reiterate the seriousness of covering up a paedo priest's actions. A priest was moved from a rural village near me to a dublin parish as he was up to no good with some local kids, he then went on to be a full on rapist ...as in anal penetration. if he was dealt with initially a child would not have been raped.

Agreed, while I hold my hands up and say my own post was probably disrespectful, this thread shouldn't suitably be for fawning remembrances exclusively.

Yep, everyone has mooched back to the circle jerk that the A&A form is.

Anyway, listening to the coverage this morning the general consensus was that he was totally unsuited for the role and sadly for all concerned that was obvious from his actions.

    RIP.

I don't get why Boards.ie insist to be 'respectful' about dead people.

Firstly, dead people legally cannot be libeled.

Also, why should people who are broadly disrespected, such as criminals or dictators be respected in death?

Probably got something to do with boards.ie being linked with daft.ie and other entities.

Where do you draw a line, are we not allowed mention his past and the decisions he made and the lives affected by those choices? We are not talking about someone who didn't pay his taxes or cheated on his wife, he was instrumental in the protection of paedophiles and the cover up of child abuse. Because of a direct result of his actions people suffered, lives have been lost to suicide and substance abuse, families have been destroyed. I'd imagine a lot of people are upset today because his passing brings back bad memories and because he's going to get away with it. He doesn't deserve respect.

Give respect, get respect, he showed no one any respect and therefore doesn't deserve any.

The worst part is, as far as the Vatican was/is concerned, he was perfectly suited. If he was the type of person who would do the decent thing, he wouldn't have been allowed to attain a position in the first place to do the decent thing.

Growing up this man confirmed my class in school. We were all in awe of the higher up priest who was going to confirm us and the stature he had in society. Little did we know the cover ups he was involved in at our age. I don't consider myself religious anymore. My faith in the church dwindled very fast once the news about the crimes being committed and shielded by the church hierarchy were now in the public domain. It is awful what people went through and the suffering they endured only to be denied by the likes of O'Connell et al.

The Vatican is hardly a beacon of good decision making.

Myself and my housemate were just talking about the Irish trait of never speaking ill of the dead and how everyone is considered great when they are gone.

Then I came across this thread. Nice to see we are changing. Good riddance DC.
