I hated the place. Friendliness of the locals non-existant. I'm off to Madrid later this year, I'll be interested to see how the 2 compare.

But Bohemian types like .ak love Barcelona, so there are differing views - don't let me put you off...

I got the same impression as you swiwi, but I feel like we're the only two people who think that way.

Try Lisbon, cheaper and it's a cracking city.

That's on my "dirty weekend away" list of places to go. Just need someone to go with me.

Just mention dirty weekend to awec and he'll be there. Might not be the dirty weekend you had in mind now...

I'm pretty much an anti-bohemian. I'm certainly not a hipster like ak and I loved Barcelona. Been a few times. Great place. But as I said somewhere else, different strokes.

Someone mentioned Lisbon and I second that. Great place.

Does anyone here do rock climbing? Is it a good complement for rugby? I kind of enjoy it and the young wan is mad into it - refuses to do any group activities - but not sure if I want to commit to a year's subscription while playing rugby as well. I'd pretty much have to go on Sundays with rugby training on Saturday. It currently takes me about 4 days till I can use my hands after climbing.

I don't do it myself but I've known a few people that do. They generally have all said at one time or another that you need to build up callouses and muscles in your hands and after you do that it gets easier.

You were bohemian before bohemian became bohemian so now you're anti-bohemian.

Basically you are the original hipster.

Correct :D I liked all those bands before they were famous. Then they became commercial sell outs and eventually no longer popular. Well I'm listening to them now before they become retro and cool again.

I was drinking craft beer so long ago that I've come full circle and I now ironically drink generic, commercial lagers.

Actually I just like cold beer. I'm not that fussy.

My fashion sense is so far ahead of everyone that I'm wearing baggy jeans not skinny ones. And when the 90s grunge, surfer/skater punk look comes back, I'll be way ahead of everyone.

At least that's what I tell my missus when she complains about my dress sense.

    It's a massive blight.

You read the case, that's currently being appealed, where a lady sued and won after she tripped and cut her knee on the wooden sleepers they use as a walkway on a part of the Wicklow Way?

Genuinely sickening that she could think she had a case, find legal people to take the case, and then a judge would give her an award of 60K!!!!

    Very sad news

I used to do it. The main attribute is your strength to weight ratio which is benefitted mostly by not carrying any weight. The ideal build is probably the opposite to the ideal build for rugby. Wiry is probably the best description of a rock climber. Not an adjective you'd really apply to a rugby player unless you're a back and even then, you'd probably have too much upper body weight.

    PEDANT ALERT!
    Yes I'm a pedant.

But this one always makes me shake my head. (And obviously Yeah_right nothing personal whatsoever in this!)
To "come full circle" means to end up back exactly where you started. In this instance back drinking craft beer again.
What people often mean to say is "I did a complete 180". i.e. I ended up doing the opposite to what I started doing.

The one that irritates me most of all though is when somebody (often Americans actually) says "10 to 1 it'll rain today." Or "10 to 1 there'll be a Rob Kearney debate on the Ireland team thread today".
If the odds of something are 10 to 1 then it's certainly not highly likely to happen.

What people mean to say is "10 to 1 ON" which means it's highly probable.

Wow. My goat really is easily got.

I assumed he started on commercial beers, moved in to craft ages ago and is now back to Heineken and Bud.

And the other expression is short for "I'll give you ten to one" I.e. I'm so sure I'll bet ten quid against your one.

    Meeeeeehheheeeeeh!

Was chatting with wife's bro-in-law last night, he's a barrister. Apparently she can't appeal as it was heard first in the circuit court, then the high court. Something like that anyway... good enough for her. Could have f*cked up a lot of outdoor recreation in the country if it was upheld.
