Titanium is there any pigs near you or lads in derogation needing to get rid of excess slurry? Might be a way to get P&K up. Lime will make a huge improvement.

Even for grazing you'd need 4 bags of 0 7 30 to the ha on the index 2 fields, if you have cows watch out for tetany from the K.

Another thing to consider is stocking rate, if you are staying lowly stocked your requirements for P&K will be lower. But you won't have early grass in Spring.

Are any of those fields peaty?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

When I took over here, I did a good bit of reclaiming and reseeding and the likes. But whilst I thought I was doing great work, I didn't get the soil right and feed the reseeds good enough after they went in...

In hindsight, I should have fed what grass I had much better...

That'd be my policy, seen two many reseeds wasted by under stocking, modern grasses won't survive poor fertility.
People jump into reseeding without being aware of the conditions that caused the deterioration of the sward.

I normally import about 20 loads of pig slurry to 30 acres I've rented (con acre). Only took one broad sample there its the 6th one down.
And instead of adding water to the tank at home for the slurry Cat I'd get a few loads of pig slurry for that to. But I'm kinda gone against spreading pig slurry to early in the year because I find it causes water to lodge abit.
Most of those samples are from free enough draining limestone fields. Some are moving into a more quartz area. There is one that is slightly peaty so I'd be slow to spread lime on it till I get some better drainage sorted up there.

What is the ideal index I should be aiming for?
These fecking colours in the report have me addled.

Jesus thanks for all the info lad's boards is like having the countries best discussion group on call 24/7.

Index 3 would be ok for less intensive grazing. I'm surprised you need so much lime on limestone land.

What did they cost per sample? I have a few to do.

Whatever you do, don't lash out those amounts of lime in the one year. You will turn the ground to putty. Do it over 3 years or so.

Now you're getting into what kind of lime am I spreading!!!

Is it dolomitic or calcitic lime or a mixture of the 2.
What percentage is the calcium and magnesium in the lime?

It's the magnesium in the lime that "turns the ground to putty".
But if your Mg is low in your soil test you need it in your lime.
Then if after you spread your lime and the Calcium is too high relative to your Mg you run the risk of grass tetany.
I think more people will be learning about the different optimum ratios for their soil fairly soon.

    Here's not a bad link.

I could have written that exact post John. I was very young when I started tho but would say I have learned from my mistakes mainly by it affecting the pocket! 'education bought is better than education taught'

Titanium, you're not in a bad position. A couple of tonne of lime per acre every second year will sort you. You will see big improvement in quality of grass and clean out of paddocks. No more dirty butt in the grass when it's palatable.

When you order a lorry load of lime - what do you get?
Is it determined by location on where the lime was quarried?
Or is there a 'standard mix'?

It's mostly Calcium lime around the country. The nearest Magnesium lime is 60 miles away from us. Generally you use what's in the locality unless you are willing to pay a good bit extra for longer deliveries.

The last load of lime I got was 100 % calcium lime.
But that wouldn't be 100% calcium in the lime. Probably around 50% calcium.
Whether I was right or wrong??
But it's fierce dusty stuff compared to dolomitic magnesium lime.
I think roadstone up here will mix it whatever way you want if you talk to the right person.

There was a link I put up before one time showing all the quarries in Ireland and what exactly was being mined.

I'm not surprised at all with the amount of 5.5 pH rainfall they get in Kerry.

    Where was that?

If you had applied urea a month ago. Would that effect the samples

I have it in my head they say not to take it from fields that had fertiliser applied in last 3 months...

Now - not sure how straight nitrogen would affect things...

You'd have to ring a lab I'd say...

Interested to know who that was as well Titanium. Have a few samples to send off...

Twas 12.50 / sample in fba labs last year when I did it...

By my reckoning it'd increase the line requirement a small bit if it was going to have any effect

Ya twas FBA Labs and it came to 72.16 for the 8 samples. I took the samples myself. The lady who does my BPS and glas applications gave me the samplier and I returned the samples to her so maybe she is getting a better rate ad she's probably returning allot of samples.

From what I was told ground had to be free from chemical fertiliser and slurry for 3 months.

I couldn't say how straight N would affect it.
Surely the ph p +k levels would remain the same.

Was it able to show you exactly where the phone was. If so that's some accuracy.

    I only saw this now..

The woman who was suing for falling on the Wicklow way had her compensation claim overturned by the high court...

Thanks be to God. It'd have set a bad precedence if it was upheld.

We'd all be taking up hillwalking and tripping over things looking for easy money.

Seems like I'm the only one that's been nailed.
