I'd have thought most John-Pauls in Ireland would be the type to 'bate the head a ya' over a piece of aluminium.

Well John-Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin would certainly "Bass" the head out of most of us! Legend!

    Seriously?

Certainly a name I've heard here. Well my sister to be precise in the Coombe circa 1999 doing the whole "what did you call her" thing. That "baby" turns adult soon.

    John-Paul = conceived in 78/79

No doubt by people who voted for the 8th amendment in 1983 and against divorce in 1986. You know the type.

Take a day off, there's a good chap.

how do you mean? Do you mean spelling their birth name differently later on in life or altering the spelling of an existing name and christening your child said "new version" Your name is your name? 99% of names derive from another spelling origin.

I mean, give us an example of said muppetry

Most names evolve over time, spelling wise over time. Do we stop the trend now?

Take your pic from any of these sh*t 'K' names; Kaytlynn, Khloe, Kody.

    No such name.

Tell that to the unfortunately named son of my hippie friends.

    Bogdan.

Probably not horrible in its country of origin but it certainly is to the ears of an irish person.

I've seen this a lot lately actually where its like a double barrel first name or something. It just sounds obnoxious I think.
Worst name I've heard someone call a child was Blaze.

Edit: Not a kids name but this thread reminded me of a guy who helped us once at a tile place that closed down in Dublin. The girl at the desk called a guy to help us and shouted out "Hercules". I wasn't sure if it was a joke but his name tag said it and all...[/quote]
'Ercole' is a very common name in Italy, translating as Hercules. As is Cesare, meaning Caesar. Does give me a giggle...

Yelling out the first name + middle name + surname means that the kid is in big trouble. Everyone knows that.

You're in a thread specifically about **** names giving out about people talking about sh*t names. People substituting letters for the sake of it falls under that category. Chloe is a lovely name. Khloe instead of Chloe is just gimpy.

Could be worse, at least you didn't name them after usernames.

YOU THINK "Chloe is a lovely name. Khloe instead of Chloe is just gimpy". Others may also agree but others will disagree.

Tad different. Saying it as if it is a fact is silly.

    What is wrong with Kathlynn?

Also Chloe originated from Cloe? So what would have been your thoughts with the alternation?

Tbh, I'm inclined to lean towards all the random Ks and Ys and Xs being shoved willynilly into names is a bit daft. Personal opinion, ofc, one thing this thread has shown is that no-one agrees on whether or not a name is "nice". :D

Mind you, I like Katherine and Kathleen better than Catherine (although 50:50 there) and Cathleen. Then again, they've been around a lot longer and I'm inured to them.

But the trend of just taking a C or I (or S) and replacing it with K, Y and Z/X leads to some names that I suspect most kids will end up resenting.

    My pet dislike is Khrystal.

hmmmmmmmmmm , are a certain reality family (Kamily) having an influence on that dislike, I wonder!

Hah, fair point, and probably? They're a fairly obvious example, I guess. Tbh, it wasn't what I was thinking - is there a Khrystal amongst them? I know there's...a Khloe, Kim..er... feckit. Kylie?

Addyson would be an example of the y-names. It just looks so...unnecessary :(

    Edit: Kourtney!

Now that is a name I kan't be koping with.

Some people name their children after two people, ie both grandparents for example. Is Mary-Anne an obnoxious name? John-Paul?
Seriously, something like John-Paul, you think its obnoxious to use the full "two syllable" version! Come on! Most John-Pauls in Ireland were named after the pope! I know the Catholic Church is an obnoxious Institution but that name couldn't be any less obnoxious! At the end of the day, it is their name and they spent their life calling them such! They are hardly going to have a shorter version on the tip of their tongue for public occasions!

You don't stop and think of your sons name before you utter it, it naturally is on the tip of your tongue! I understand ridiculous names but a simple combination of two names when christening your child, many of which have evolved into distinct names themselves over time: Sarah-Jane, Lizanne, etc is hardly breaking the obnoxious bank!

At the end of the day, your name is your name! There are some f'ed embarrassing names out there, some child abuse offences! But I don't think a Sophia-Lily should be in that bracket! Jer name isn't Sophia, her name is Sophia-Lily!

Sorry, don't want to rant but that is an example of faux outrage!
Really?? The first 2 are lovely names, not sure the issue with 3rd either.. ??

    What is wrong with Kathlynn?

As a side-note, that is a name that suggests the parents weren't sure what they wanted to name their child, so they just rammed several names into one and called the kid whatever was pronounceable at the end.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,037 ✭✭✭✭The Talking Bread

isn't a name a name though! I mean it is your most distinguible feature, formally, so adhering to conformity with regard a letter that is usually used in past forms, I mean, I don't get it, once it isn't an absurd alteration! Some names are just ridiculous titles, others bizarre stuff like Gary Neville's father being called Neville Neville (genuinely!) but Khloe/Addyson/Kathlynn (a variation of Katherine and Lynn), I mean what is so absurd/gimpy about those?

All names evolve over times, I guarantee you its very likely yours has changed at some time from another variation.
