Would you like your child to get a good education get a good job and would you want them to stick at the job even though they hated it ?
Or would you be happy if they just scraped through secondary school, and became a jack of all trades earning enough money just to get by but as happy as Larry.

I know parents who would opt for the first every time. I tell mine that it dosen't matter how much you earn or what job you do if your not happy doing it

Just to see them happy, and so long as that was not hurting other people or themselves, then thats the best for them.

    Are they my only choices?

My hope is that they wouldn't be my children's only choices.

That they reach reproductive maturity and pass on their genes to the next generation.

All I want is that they are happy. I don't care what job they do or how much they earn but I do tell them no amount of money is worth it to do a job that makes you miserable.

Happy and fulfilled in whatever they choose to do, I hope I can provide for them so they can choose a job/life they enjoy.
I think any parent wants their children to do better than them, I'm in a job I hate, with a commute that's killing me but it provides for the family, I just hope work wise they're happier than me.

    Happy and healthy.

Obviously just that they are healthy: mentally and physically.

Career wise, obviously you want your kids to achieve their full potential and 'do well' but whatever they do in life or what they earn isn't really important to me as long as they don't sponge off other people.

As said already, the only real disappointment I'd envisage is if they ended up as bad people: snobs, bullies; dodging their responsibility to their kids or other family etc.

To grow up not knowing I am their father and then, after a light saber duel with the boy, tell him the truth.

Maybe the sick twisted system is our financial system?

I agree with you, but we need to balance this stuff too. Money certainly makes life comfortable. Lack of money makes life very difficult.

I fear that the next generation will not have the same opportunities for decent employment and the decent housing that requires decent employment.

That they are happy people and decent to themselves and to others. It's all I want for them.

I fear for the world my child will grow up in. We're in a time now where social media is taking over, idiots are running around after imaginary Pokemon, you can't have a conversation with a teenager cause they're being distracted by their phones, and where the likes of kim Kardashian/Miley Cyrus are role models. What's it gonna be like in 15 years?
Other than that I hope my child is happy, well grounded and doesn't get sucked in by all that shjte

While I completely agree, it's desperately hard to make sure they have a good head on their shoulders. They just want to be like everyone else their age, which is a difficult force to beat. First and foremost, my teenagers don't own phones. I don't allow any technology during meals, and any WiFi privelages are cut off at a certain time of the evening. Once that happens the older one listens to music or watches something for a while before bed, the other hops into bed and reads for a while. I hate how technology has taken over family lives, and often the parents are just as bad. If there is one thing in this world that I wish would just fcuk off and die it's the life-leech that is Facebook.

I'm not saying there aren't strops over wi-fi being cutting off, but it's the only hope I have of keeping them from floating off I to virtual world permanently. When all is said and done, keeping up with The Talentless and getting a high score in a game won't give them a job or pay their bills when they are older. A lot of teenagers now are spoiled little snowflakes, and it's bloody worrying for the future.

I've fought hard over the years for them to achieve the very best the can academically, but I never knew how hard this would be in secondary. You worry about who their influences are and if they are heading for a slippery slope. To say I worry myself sick at times would be a fair statement. I worry about them taking up smoking, bullies and all the usual s.hit a parent does.

I realise I can only guide them, and only hope for them to come out of school without too much mental bomb damage. I've always wanted them to aim high, and the only reason for that is because I've never wanted them to struggle as adults. But the reality of it is quite different. Coming out of it all with a head on their shoulders and achieve a career in something they don't hate is all you can hope for.

I, personally, believe that children are our are future. We should teach them well and let them lead the way, whilst also showing them all the beauty they possess inside and give them a sense of pride just to, you know, make it easier.

Basically we should let children's laughter remind us all of how we used to be ......... as kids ourselves.

When I was young I wanted to be a tractor but my parents stood in my way, I will not do the same to my kids. As long as they are happy, I'll be happy

I read about someone doing this as a way of ensuring a pension is started young.

So I was thinking of starting a pension fund for my preschooler now.

The only problem is that since the Michael Noonan raided my own pension fund I don't trust that the money is safe from future raids anymore, so I don't even fund my own pension anymore.

However if the day came when pension funds were fully protected from government raids I might condiser funding my own and my kids pensions again.

I've done ok for myself, but by Christ I took a long and hard route. I would like my daughter to reach a similar destination in an easier way, and I know I can help her with that

    Jobs they like.

    Lives they're happy with.

Patners they are happy with...or none, if they're happy with that.

Finally...that other people will say, "My life is the better better for having <storker's kid> as my girlfriend/lover/spouse/friend/colleague/boss..."

    Oh, and finely-tuned bullsh1t detectors.

You can do that today by starting an ordinary investment account - one of the ones that doesn't get the benefit of very generous tax relief to funds going in. That way you can avoid any risk of future raiding taxation on pension funds.
