Depends on the mileage. You'd want to be doing at least 20k+ miles pa to warrant the sacrifice imo.

And I don't think it's even close to 90% of the benefit...

I have been doing about 15k km per year and feel I'm well into diesel territory, the GTi is just too thirsty and that was mostly long trips where the Gti isn't too bad on fuel but the GTD would really thrive. Now I'm doing 20km per day commuting (on top of the regular long trips) and I can barely get 500km from a tank which is just not enough for me. I actually like diesels so wouldn't see the GTD as much if any of a sacrifice but that's just me. Its looks great and goes better than most cars on the road.

Is it a MK5? 500km isn't great alright. I'm getting nearly that to a (smaller) tank in the R. The economy is definitely a bit better in the MK7's. A MK7 GTI will get mid-high 30's mpg with mileage you do.

Yeah an mk5. I was always getting over 600km but now its down to about 500km or a little more if I do more long trips. The thing is I'd probably increase the frequency of long trips too if it was costing me less (more trips home across the country) so there is that aspect too that would sway me towards diesel, especially if I was to put the money into buying new or nearly new I'd be wanting a big drop in running costs. Tax drops a lot either way but fuel costs would be fairly similar having heard from someone driving a mk7 doing similarish driving. I had thought the mk7 would be better but now not so sure having heard the figures from someone driving one.

Tbh I do just consider 150bhp highlines a lot of the time too but the Gti/GTD just look so good both inside and out. I've said every year for the last 2 or so that "I'll change the car this year" but I think this will be the year to be honest and will probably start weighing up my options seriously come summer time.

Stating the obvious here but as with any car mpg has a lot of variables. The turbo in the golf just magnifies this variance too as when you are on it it will eat petrol like you've a hole in the tank, a large hole at that.

This was an average from a full tank, admittedly on a track

    zvom7a.jpg

Real world averages below that I had over about 18k km

And here's a picture of her tucked up because mpg something ah just :(

The more worrying part is no alam == no deadlocks.

Do you not get deadlocking from double pressing the lock button?

Not unless the car has the factory alarm.

    Any sellers remorse?

No not at all, I ticked a lot of boxes with that car. New order spec by me, fast, 4wd with launch etc. Took it to a track and enjoyed it while I had it. Variety the spice of life etc.

Coincidentally I got my VRT back on it two days ago, just checked my bank account 5 mins ago happy days!!

Fair play..did it work out much better exporting it as opposed to trading or selling it here privately?

It was a bit of hassle but still worth it. It wasn't as much as I would have hoped though as the stg rate made a big difference after Brexit but some things you can't control or predict. I would have struggled to sell such a fresh car privately.

As far as i remember, i had a Golf van TDI modified to 230bhp and i then bought a Octavia RS 200bhp TFSI. I do 30k miles a year and the difference it made at the time was approx 2k a year in fuel costs. So if you keep the car 5 years that's 10k extra over a diesel if you do 30k a year and want similiar power levels. The GTD is a very good compromise IMO and you can remapp them.

At that mileage, for sure. It'd take me the best part of 4 years to do 30k miles :pac:

That said, I know of a fella who has ~100k kms (that's not a typo - One Hundred Thousand Kilometres) clocked up on a 12 month old R

Jaysus. He must have gone through a good few tyres as well??

I can imagine... Doing the figures in my head, he must be filling up at least 4 times a week. That alone would get pretty tiresome!

It's a company car (he must have a very understanding boss) and it gets serviced on the button, never wants for anything. Been serviced at least 3 or 4 times already. It could be an interesting cheap punt for someone when it's eventually sold on!

I thought i was doing well putting 32kms on the ST!

Irish people put up mad miles.
I've 20,000 Km on my clock after two years and I prefer it that way.

Unfortunately not everyone has short commutes...

100k kms in 12 months is obviously a huge exception.

If you want to do high mileage just buy more cars :D
I did 12k Kms in the R last year, 6k in the gti and this year I'll have a diesel for long runs so less miles per car in 2017.

I have a May 2008 mark v gti bought new by myself with 84,000km as we speak

What's it being like reliability wise? Faults?

Nothing major. He's had a water pump replaced and buckled a couple of alloys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭maddness

My R is 9 months old with 35,000 kms on the clock and has been like clockwork.
I've enjoyed every drive in it too. A GTD would be far cheaper on fuel but luckily my company pays for fuel and to be honest the performance gap is well worth the price.

Just for argument sake, petrol was 1:30 litre and say the car averages 30 mpg that would be over 12k a year in fuel costs! Circa 235 euro a week!.

Why the significant price increase for the GTD? Am I wrong in saying the price has gone up by almost €1,000? Tax also up... Is this because the emissions figures are more truthful now?

Has anyone lowered the suspension? Was speaking to a salesman and his view was that lowering by 30 mill makes a good difference?

I did in the GTI. VWR springs. Improved the looks for sure but the ride was certainly firmer. The R on 19's (standard suspension but a tad lower than standard GTI) rides better.

Lots of good reports on VW Racing springs, they have been revised a few times and the latest ones are supposed to be very similar to original comfort.
They are compatible with DCC too.
