I was hoping for a report from someone who has one. Bear in mind this box has a h265 capable video chip, so it would be a different beast from HD chipped boxes, regardless of the processor. If anything, I'd be concerned that a chip designed for 2160 resolution might not be optimised for SD or even hd, plus the issue of setting the output to UHD then expecting the box to upscale SD without visible artefacts. We discussed this at length on the alien thread a while back.

That's a very good point and I had mentioned it a good while back.
The question I had asked months back was would the 1080p or even 720p signal output on a 4K receiver be better than that of a previous generation non 4k receiver.
So would a 4k receiver connected to a non 4k tv bring you the extra processing power with a similar picture or would the picture be inferior.

I dont have a 4k tv ,only 1080p so I'd be planning to run it in 1080p mode.
Generally speaking SD and even HD on a 4k set will look worse than on a 1080p set due to the upscaling involved and noise introduced into the signal.

I'd buy one but to be honest I'm growing tired of buying MIPS receivers and then moving them on ,due to unacceptable picture quality.
A brief reading of German forums seem to indicate the OS Mega picture as having the same issues as other Mips based receivers, for example the Mutant HD51 with an arm processor produces a better picture.
But at 200 euro I am tempted to try it on my own eyes :)

OS3+  is mips also, I honestly can't fault the picture quality on it.

Its not as good as your Alien 2 though .
I had the Technomate Nano 3T ,same receiver as the OS3 ,picture quality wasn't as sharp especially SD .
    Hi Zardoz
What options are there for ARM  based STB's. I know of the Vu+ 4K, but they are €€€.
Are we close to seeing them become affordable ?

Would that be for 2 tuners. No wifi either.

    2 x DVB-S/S2 or DVB-C/T/T2.
I actually didn't realise it had no wifi,I suppose that would be an issue for plenty of people but I would always use a wired connection for the box's.

I think that offer expired last night so back to around 230 euro again.

    Folks,

    Quick question,

I recently updated Openvix to the latest version (4.2.30) on my Xtrend ET8000. The problem I have now is that I am unable to access webif! using 8093 port that I used only the day before

    IP address is the same
I can access oscam with port 8888
I have enabled webif in the plugins with HTTP authentication and port 8001
I tried it without http authentication but I can't even connect to it.

I reboot box and have reflashed it twice with no luck!!

Am I missing something? I changed my password on the box using DCC would that have caused any issues?

Can I check something in oscam (8888) that might point me in the right direction?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Webif default is probably 80 on the new install, so just use box ip with no port as browser defaults to 80. You can check webif config on plugins to verify this.

Ok, I've changed port on webif plugin to 80 from 8001 and I can now connect to webif. THANK YOU

Have ports 8001, 8093, 80 all forwarded to Xtrend IP.

How do I change the port to 8093 and use 8001on the webif?

    Thanks again

That is so annoying. Just changed it back to 8093 and now I can connect with this port also!! It wouldn't before.

    Why would that have happened?

If memory serves me right I always had http port set to 8001.

    Is this setup ok??

Just get a Wireless WiFi WLAN USB Dongle Stick. One with an aerial like stick. Most boxes dont have built in wifi.

They are less than €5 on ebay.

Normal port for http ( Web server interface of any device) is 80. Web browsera add 80 by default, so you don't append :80 to the device ip or url. Port 8001 is normally used for streaming. Webif connects to the box Web server using 80 by default, assuming webif config us set to 80, then if you click a channel stream icon, the little tv, webif or will connect the stream via port 8001 by default. If you have more than one device with a Web interface that you need to connect from the external network then you have to configure alternative external ports on the router to the devices internal ip and ports. Say you have a cctv camera with a Web server interface. To see it from outside you might forward external port 8080 to its http port 80 so your external ip will connect by default to the box and external plus 8080 you another device.

On the off chance anyone might be needing a replacement vu+ remote and find themselves on eBay, avoid this w@nker. Says Derby and says it will be delivered to Ireland within a week or two, but he has attached a China Post tracking #. Could have got it from a Chinese listing for half that price if that is what I wanted.
Urgently needed a replacement remote too

Says original too, which I assume is also b***ocks.

A week or 2 from Derby? Should be a day or three more like. Theres a lot of those resellers about, there's even a term or it, cant remember it. Worse, you could be scalded for import vat.

I bought a second remote a while back on eBay, it then came in an Amazon box and seemed to be from there, I had to check my email to confirm that I had ordered it on eBay. Was well strange I thought.

Edit: Mine came an eBay seller in Derby too, it came in a reasonable time though. Different seller but he may have changed names.

I purchased an edision os mega from freetv.ie last Thursday as a treat to myself. The box arrived yesterday (I went for standard delivery), and I got to plug it in and set it up last night. €205 with the boards discount.

I am coming from an Amiko Alien 2, so I was hoping to see have a generally quicker experience with this STB

I got a openvix backup image from TechKings, the install is a piece of cake. Just plug in the USB with the image on it and turn on the STB.

First impressions are good, it is a lot quicker navigating around the menus, changing channels and watching recordings. It took me a while to get the bouquets in a familiar order to the way they were on the AA2, I needed to do this to pass the family usability test. The image I have has a lot more options when it comes to setting up the bouquets, a little consuming tbh but I got there in the end. I was able to plug in my Samsung USB hard drive so no loss of recordings made on the AA2.

The only downside so far is that some of the SD channels appear to be not as clear as on the AA2. I didn't spend long investigating this as it was late, but channels such as be on saorview do not look good on the OS Mega. It is not terrible but it noticeable. Another boardsie recommended adjusting the AV settings to see if that improves, I'll give that a go at some point and see if that improves things.

So happy with performance of the box, definitely a step up from the AA2. I'll report back after I've played with the AV settings.

the picture issue is a known issue with boxes with use mips chipsets. The AA2 uses a broadcom chipset .

I had a play with the av settings and it isn't as bad. The image I am using has options to deal with the different resolutions which the aa2 didn't.

Still not as sharp as the aa2 but not far off.

Are these options in the AV settings to deal with how resolution scaling is handled, beside the basic output resolution setting. Any chance of a screen grab of that menu

I'm afraid you will never get it as good ,it will always be a noticeable difference, no matter how much you tweak the setting on the receiver or tv.
MIPS cpu's are poor at video processing ,its the achilles heel of the architecture.

The new Arm based receivers ,Mutant Hd51 and Octagon SF4008 ,have an ARM cpu which provides a good picture ,similar to that of the SH4 architecture in the Alien 2.
I think these receivers will be very popular.

That's a lot of potential tweaking. Bound to get an ideal setting for astra sd (720 ) and saorview sd (544)

Any recommendations for a second box for the dining room? I've the twin tuner in the main room and just want a second one for the odd time it'll be watched in the dining room so even a cheap one would suffice?

Do you need sat and terrestrial? or sat only? Best value sat only with cccam and 7 day epg is the openbox v8 or v9, both with wifi, €55 and €58 on ebay from an irish supplier delivery included. Non linux boxes but can do everything you'd want. If you want to stay with linux then any of the edision Minis, single or twin tuners are really responsive little machines, notwithstanding opinions on SD quality. Single tuner €93.97 with Boards discount code. If you want saorview without paying for the twin tuner version (€117.87) you can use the single tuner one to stream off your main box. You can set up an entire boquet based on your second box and have access to its tuners and 'certain' channels, without needing to set up a line on this box. I bought a edision mini a year+ ago for family, and the freetv image had a full epg bouguet list for streaming from another box. Only a case of editing the channels list and changing the IPs in the list to those of your main box, to give you great versatility.
