Welp, had the first meeting of the college radio station I work for earlier. Most of the people (late teens and early 20's) were overwhelmingly positive about the appointment... One went as far to say "Today FM has really turned itself around in the past year or two, they're all I listen to now."

Needless to say, I'll be tendering my resignation in the morning. :P
Humanity is doomed..........., doomed I tells ya!:pac:

I'm a bit surprised by this appointment, tbh. Like a previous poster, I spend a lot of time driving and the radio is a companion during the day, a bit of music, a bit of craic, a bit of serious stuff, all mixed up and random.

My memories of Al Porter on 2fm aren't positive but I'll give him time to see what direction the show is heading before I turn the channel. Maybe he will turn out to be an unpolished gem like Ray D'Arcy was at the beginning and make the slot his own. I've heard him a few times on radio and just don't find him funny at all but I would be well outside the speculated demographic that Today FM seem to be targeting so that may well play a part in being not very hopeful but I will give him a chance, at the very least.

Saying that, though, since Anton left, I've been channel hopping as soon as something I don't like comes on and, increasingly, I don't choose TodayFM to hop back to:(

They aren't a national station tho

Mutli-City isn't it, so its a big enough appeal.

4FMs licence precludes them from playing pop music; as it will when readvertised for 2019.

Don't think there's any suggestion 4fm is going anywhere . Their main parent was the subject of some speculation recently on a sister site of boards (fora) which talked about cumulative trading losses . Common in all businesses

Ye, they have some heavy losses, as does NOVA it seems, i'm sure they are still making enough money to pay the staff etc... and that all comes from advertising revenue presumably, so as long as the stations keep perfoming to a certain standard they will be ok, but at some point you can't keep making a loss without any scope for potential gain. The losses seemed heavy, and from listneing to 4FM, not so much NOVA though, there is little scope for money saving when it comes to on air, stations share News staff, Niall Boylan is used twice in the day, overnights are automated etc.. How long can any company survive incurring losses day to day?

I must be the only one who didn't mind Louise's afternoon show. I thought it could have done with more of Ann but overall I liked it and liked her sense of humour. Much better than that dope they have in now. I don't blame them for moving her though if ratings were falling.

Neither are Newstalk ? Wasn't it a "quasi" national at the time ?

Newstalk has a much better nationwide coverage than 4fm. There are large chunks of the country where it can't be picked up.

I always felt like she never really came across as comfortable and secure in the slot. She was filling in for Tony for ages, then she got her own show, then D&D came in and she was moved, then she moved again to evenings.

I liked her, but I never got the impression that she was being backed to put her own stamp on that lunchtime slot or even the 2:30 slot.

Now, maybe it would never have changed and listenership might have continued to dwindle.

I felt they tried with her a lot by doing a lot of advertising or her and her show and they seemed to want her to succeed and iirc a lot other shows on today fm were promoting her I thought ... I was one of her critics as her day shows sounded like a radio version of loose women at times - her new show is more simple and has a better Playlist and a lot less talking

Not sure who Al Porter appeals to, I am in that age range and work/go to college with the age group they're trying to appeal to....I cant say ive heard anyone saying that he's good or did you catch Al, like other comedians...but that's just me....and honestly between 9-4.30, the shows are going to be similar

yea todayfm think he is popular with the youth but in reality he really only appeals to the modern granny, the type who think republic of telly is a disgrace but think mrs browns boys is hilarious because its an auld one being filthy, same with porter they think the camp shock factor is hilarious and doesnt he dress nice

Al Porter is basically Kenneth Williams crossed with Russell Harty. Suspect he could actually make it quite big in the UK as a presenter but not sure what audience they expect on radio.

I was surprised at the appointment of Al Porter, but gonna give him the benefit of the doubt - I don't think we can use the work he did on Colm Hayes's show as a basis for what he will do on TodayFM as it wasn't his show, this is a different set up and he will have more say (dunno yet of that will be good or bad)

He is one to watch for the UK, and I'm kinda surprised he hasnt been advised to do more over there as he is very like Kenneth Williams and is unapologetic for that as he is his idol (heard on Living With Lucy I think).

Al Porter seems to model his style of humour and delivery on Frankie Howard, have a look on YouTube and you'll see the similarity straight away. While he is certainly articulate and bright (whether you like his humour or not?) I'm not sure how his persona would translate to a regular radio show. You'd have to think he would be joined by guests with regular on air interaction from producers and callers otherwise if it's just him doing a music driven show alone it won't work, as he needs someone to bounce off.

He has a very old fashioned kind of comedy. Most people under 40 wouldn't know frankie Howard or Kenneth Williams. He didbt work out on 2fm why should this be any different?

One thing to remember, al Porter will only be a short term stint, with everything he's dabbling in he won't want a long term contact, he'll do a year at most

I'd say less than a year. Also he probably will be off every 2nd week.

I've caught a bit of the BBC radio output the last few days for the first time in ages. I know it's unfair to compare today fm to the beeb but both radio 1 and bbc five live have sounded crisp and they don't try to be something they aren't. It was nice to hear.

Edit: Also no ads is a big plus. My point is today fm are making big changes in 2017 but the BBC show that if you stick to a plan and a not mess with what works you'll have a good radio show.

Yea your right there, he is only using todayfm as a platform to advertise himself, i'd say he is angling for a tv show of his own plus all his panto and stand up i dont know how he is goign to have time for a radio show, he will be like ireland am when they got in simon delaney and at the time delaney was way more in demand so he literally started on the show and then he was gone and they had to get a stand in, so i can see there being more of muireann on that time slot than porter...
