Its pathetic that Irish radio stations are unable to locate female presenters of any sort for peak hour shows. Its at the point of being ridiculous.

The ones they have are pretty poor - Louise's ratings tanked and her day shows sounded like an amateur version of Loose Women .... 2/3 hours of Paula mac would be grating ... ditto Alison Curtis and Muireann is okay ...

    I've figured it out

Communicorp have looked at rte and noticed how they screwed 2fm

And being the egocentric people they are they thought, no!!!, we're better at fùckin up a national radio station. That'll show em

To be honest, if that's not it I'm out of ideas.

This is turning into an absolutely major feck up.

It's an odd decision and one I don't agree with. Having said that, I can sort of understand why they went this route. They went down the route of giving a major show to a person who wasn't a household name (Anton) and it didn't work out for them. I'm one of the people who's sorry Anton's show is gone but from a radio station perspective, that experiment was a failure. He was losing listeners and it's likely that this would have continued indefinitely. Perhaps they believe that by moving an established duo (Dermot & Dave) to the mid-morning slot and parachuting in someone who's known already into lunchtime, it'll give the station a revamp. The last few sets of JNLRs haven't been good for Today FM and management presumably believe they are now going to stop the rot. We shall see...

I dont think that Anton was a failure, he was well respected and yes, while there was a drop in his numbers they were within reason. The reason he went is because he didnt accept the way that management wanted to push the show.
I would see that as Anton been principled and (because he already has a successful career) decided feck it, I am not going to do what I dont want to do and was not hired to.
I think most people hear who listened to Anton found him to be one of the best presenters on Irish radio who could easily go from serious interviews to silly crap like eating fermented swedish fish. The main problem with Anton was that he wasnt appealing to the demographic that the station wants (ignoring the demo they already have).

I think that they have made a massive mistake with Al Porter, not having seen much of him it seems like he is someone that appeals to grannies who are part shocked/amused by what he says. I will listen and see how he gets on but going in with low expectations.

For a station that used to be about making content/conversations it feels like its turning into a MOR version of Spin with 90% more fake laughter throughout the day

    Wow...Odd decision.

From a few years ago where Today FM had it nailed from 8-8 with Dempsey (well Gift Grub anyway) Darcy + crew before he disappeared up his own arse, Foley at his peak (personal taste), Fenton / Duffy, Cooper and then decent evening stuff...to this.  What the hell.

I now find a half hr commute with Breakfast Republic to be just about tolerable most of the time (anything better that same ol same ol Iano), and the office internet radio was switched onto a Spotify radio playlist for the full 8.30-5.30 a few months back. Tbh I often stick on Google Play music in the car on the way home if it isn't Matt Cooper, at a stretch.

Honestly...looks like the beginning of the end (or middle of the end?) to me - unless maybe I'm just the demographic (35) they're trying to lose?..though it was the mid 20's in the office who forced the Spotify issue!

For what it's worth - I really liked D&D at lunch but the mid morning slot is a bit much...I also really like McLoone, Duffy, and Delamere on a Sunday morning.  I'd often have preferred Delamere or McLoone to Anton when they covered him in the mornings.  Shame that it seems to have gone to the dogs really.  Might be better for Matt Cooper to get out while he still can, as long as he goes somewhere with national coverage, Newstalk is non existent in NI.

Not a fan of his style so don't think I'll be listening in to the new show.

    Well sorry! :(

Imagine becoming a TV / Radio presenter and having to deal with that sh1te. Such a small industry here that unless you're at the very top you have to be a yes man. It's a bit like aspiring to be a Michelin star chef and spending your life serving pub carvery. 'All the veg?'. :(

Not sure about Tunein on a desktop or laptop but on a android phone it is the same 30sec ad each time you connect to Todayfm. That is bad enough but leaving a wifi area into a 3g/4g area, the ad repeats and vice versa once there is a connection change.

It's not just when you disconnect, if my headphones pull out accidentally, the app stops and when I plug them back in the ad plays again. REally annoying. Doesn't play for Newstalk tho, strangely enough.

Practically every change TodayFM have made to their line-up in recent years has resulted in me tuning in less and less. The ad on the app is annoying too. Really like Paul McClune. Talk less and more interesting music please. As for the rest the music can be bland and the patter terrible. The Matt Cooper show can be okay if the subject matter is interesting but a lot of the time it is not and sends me channel hopping or turning radio off. This latest change will mean more spotify listening for me.

McCloone is the only thing that's keeping me interested in Today fm these days, Coopers getting a bit too condescending these days and the same topics keep coming up e.g. Trump are getting a bit boring

Welp, had the first meeting of the college radio station I work for earlier. Most of the people (late teens and early 20's) were overwhelmingly positive about the appointment... One went as far to say "Today FM has really turned itself around in the past year or two, they're all I listen to now."

Needless to say, I'll be tendering my resignation in the morning. :P

I've had the same issue with Today FM on TuneIn & Irish Radio Player apps on multiple iOS devices, both on home Wifi and 4G. Loss of signal, app switching, pausing, phone calls or removing earphones will restart the 30 second advert. No other station has this, so I assume it must be to do with the way their stream is configured. Incredibly irritating and not a good way for Today FM to build their online listener base.

With Dermot and Dave now moved, this is the first time since 1988 that 2FM and Today FM combined have had no chat show on the schedule from 9 to 12 noon.
So basically there has always been a chat show in that slot on a national 'pop music' station since then ....(Gerry Ryan, Ray D'Arcy, Tubridy, Anton Savage)

So I take it that means that 1988 was the first time since whenever that there was a chat show at that time.

    Times change, get over it.

Hmmm has there even been such a big gap in the market for a new national radio station playing good music? Cathal Funge for breakfast, Anton Savage mid-morning, Ray Foley (With Ann Gleeson) afternoons, Chris and Ciara drivetime (far to good to be languishing at 10pm on 2FM) and Claire Beck evenings...

Wonder if that 4FM License will be available in the future, there was a thread here recently about their dire financial situation at present.

4FM are hiring a new News Editor, so one would assume they're planning to be around a while longer...

4FMs licence precludes them from playing pop music; as it will when readvertised for 2019.

They would have a PPS agreed with the BAI that will allow a % of modern music. That will be very, very low.

Don't think there's any suggestion 4fm is going anywhere . Their main parent was the subject of some speculation recently on a sister site of boards (fora) which talked about cumulative trading losses . Common in all businesses
