If they're in contract with Vodafone, they should see if they can upgrade their existing contract to fiber.
Vodafone have as much right to resell the Open Eir product as Eir do,
and should be happy to consider extending your parents' contract and
increasing their monthly spend by selling them what they want.

I know it's double cost, but could they get fibre and just stop using Vodafone?

€45pm for Vodafone and €55pm for Eir =€100pm and for 2 pensioners that's something they simply cannot afford!

Yes, I knew there was a broadband only package, there's numerous options on the contract form, I'll see if I can post a photo of it.

I'm sure that's possible although they were adamant that Net1 and Vodafone have no agreements with them at the minute and are unlikely to have one with them, obviously they're going to push their own product but I was impressed with the level of knowledge they had, I must have been talking to them for close to an hour about it, usually I don't give sales people any time at all!

Vodafone don't and are unlikely to as they are so involved in Siro. I think they are wrong or lying about the others but it's academic as €55 is the cheapest you're going to get at the moment.

Good to know the broadband only package is mentioned as it should help take-up.

all them phone calls have already been made to Vodafone, there is no fibre cabinet close to them, the ftth is the only option and Vodafone themselves have said they cannot get it. I spoke to numerous people in Vodafone about it, the only option they have is to buy out their contract for €400 and then sign up with Eir, it's ridiculous I know but it seems watertight

Vodafone may have the right but they are unwilling to exercise that right as Openeir are now their primary competition for control of rural Ireland's broadband infrastructure.

I'm appalled to hear that, but as you know FTTH has nothing to do with any fiber cabinet, and is just about that blue line for now,
so at least some of those conversations were not 100% informed.

Vodafone are listed as a customer of Open Eir, and there is supposed to be a 30 day period to allow all providers to set up their products for sale at the same time, but it appears that their advertised lightspeed product may not be one of them.
Wish I'd realised that before signing up for a 2 year 4G contract a few months ago!

So; even if my road has the blue line on it, and the nearest cabinet (3 miles) is "live, it could still take 3 years (if ever!) to see fibre broadband out at my house?

OpenEir are now claiming they'll have it all done by the end of 2018.
I think it's fair to say there's a healthy scepticism on that revised estimate in this thread though.

Yesterday I saw a small KN van near the end of the blue line on the opposite side of Claregalway from where I am. Down the last marked side road off the N17 on the Galway side near McHughs pub.

I haven't seen much activity since spotting a KN van at my end of the blue line over 9km away from there the other side of the exchange. And although there appears to be no new wiring on any poles yet, it is one of the lengthiest exchange areas, and I suppose now having personally seen a KN van at both opposite ends of the blue lines is promising - it shows we're at least on the radar!

Can't see that as a possibility, to be honest. I've been told that contracts still have to be signed yet. Then planning, then the groundwork (all underground, yeah?). I'm dubious about whether I'll ever see it at me, never mind 2020.

You are confused ......... the contracts relate to the NBP only.

This thread, and the comment you responded to, relates to eir's commitment to roll out fibre commercially, along the 'blue lines' they specified.

KN & Neville's have been in the Cratloe area for past number of weeks laying all the cabling. All the cables are underground in the area and just come up to individual poles for drop cables to houses so it didn't look like much was happening.
but finally seen them bringing the fibre up to the dropp poles at the end of the blue line where the underground cabling finishes and goes over head.
Will they bring the cable up to each individual drop pole now, or just leave it available in the man holes to bring up once ordered?

I'm in different region so no good to me either way!!

The fibre to the house has all been done in my area and to date they 100% match up with the blue lines. It stopped short of my house by about 300m on the map and sure as night follows day thats what happened on site.

Pole replacement being done in the Kinvara area over the last few days. All progress :)

The Blue Line fiber is being rolled out by Open Eir, not Eir.
It's a very convenient renaming for Eir sales and makes confusion common.

Nobody from Open Eir will knock on anybody's door to sell them fiber.
They sell their products to Eir and other broadband providers.

To be fair though, it's better branding distinction than the previous setup "Eircom" and "Eircom Wholesale"

At least OpenEir sounds like a vaguely different company.

Dissapointing that there was no update to the open eir rollout map this week, hopefully an update next week.

Also surprised to see no marketing for the places going live since November. Open Eir's twitter was full of marketing for FTTH between September and mid November but nothing heard from them since.

on their website they seem to be only offering up to 150 for FTTH and same price as Eir's 150 broadband only package.

I didn't claim it was good value, I was just countering the lies told by door to door salespeople. The broadband only package by eir is currently the best option.

with the addition of a VOIP phone in the net1 package ...... so seems slightly better than the eir offer?

Good spot, I knew the sales people would naturally be all for their own brand, it will be interesting to hear if anyone actually does order ftth from Net1 and how long it takes for the install to happen

They seem to focus on converting legacy wireless customers to fibre. I'm not sure how many would choose them over the bigger players.

They're pushing their infinity product to existing customers at €45pm around here with a promise of speeds of up to 50mbs. I know a few who upgraded to it and their speeds are anything between 15-30mbs which is enough speed for most people including myself but It's the contention ratio that puts me off that package. At least with the direct fibre cable you know you'll have a stable connection

Is fibre to the home only possible with a cable from a pole? The poles stop short of me and current phone line is underground for about 200m.

It can be done from both overhead and underground. It should just come in the same spot as your current phone line. More important is if you are on a "blue line".

Look for you house on this map. If a blue line goes past it then you are very likely going to be able to get it at some point. http://fibrerollout.ie/where-and-when/

Thanks. They stopped the fibre about 300m from me in both directions. There's a gap in the middle about 600m. Good part of that is underground. I'm talking to eir sales about getting it extended.

Something I forgot to mention is the obvious free subscription to Eir/BT Sport, I am a current subscriber and even though I pay annually for 2 subs it still costs roughly €20 per month, but now that's free so in effect my ftth connection will only cost me €35pm, it's a great deal for anyone who has or wants Eir/BT Sport.

There are of course others who have no interest in sport and would like a voip phone and for those Net1 maybe have a better deal in place.

It's great that us folks in the sticks have at last got a choice of providers and options now!
