Trying to get back to some sort of normality, hoping to get back into a routine now that the darts are nearly over and I'll be back at work on Wednesday.

Funny week running wise, thought I'd get a lot more done but a S&C session left me very stiff and heavy and I couldn't do my tempo session as a result, binning it for a 6 mile easy run instead. Wasn't sure if I was just sore or whether I was getting some additional niggles. Took 2 days off as a precaution.

My plan is to get back to the fitness levels of November and jump into a marathon when I'm there or thereabouts. I've heard good things about the Donadea 50k and I have never done it before so I was going to try and do it as a very long slow run but I'm away with the kids midterm so it'll have to hold.

I'd entered the Louisiana marathon on 15th Jan but today's long run convinced me that I'm nowhere near ready but I'll definitely do one in the first half of the year.

I don't want to get to the end of 2017 and be known as "that lad that's always trying to break 3 hours" :)

    Happy New Year

    Wednesday: 9.5 miles easy
    Thursday: 4 miles easy
    Friday: eating
    Saturday: 6 miles easy
    Sunday: a 10,000 calorie day
    Monday: 21 miles easy

Tuesday: nothing, but I did have two big packets of giant buttons with a cup of coffee. Was in Stoke at the Stoke/Watford game. Did a small bit of S&C in the hotel room while the young lad provided a laughing running commentary!

Wednesday: got home late afternoon and was to do a few miles easy, couldn't find my head torch so I'd to drive back towards town and did 9 miserable boring miles around housing estates, the whole while grumbling about the unfairness of the lack of street lights in BoggerLand!!!

    9 moaney miles easy.

Thursday: session down for today and I wasn't looking forward to it. I couldn't believe it when I weighed myself this morning, it was only a few weeks ago that the number started with a 12, the red light blinked a weight not far off 14, "no f'ing way", "it's broken", I reset it, same number, I adjusted the scales position on the floor, same number, I wiggled a bit left and right, same number, ffs!!! I quick examination in the mirror revealed that not only had I saddlebags but there were additional sausage roll like folds of fat hanging off the saddle bags! Need to get this in check fast.

    Session was wu/cd with 2 miles @ 6.40; 7 miles @ 7ish pace and 2 miles @ 6.40, off 3 minutes

Headed to Dangan for this pretty apprehensive, and I didn't need to draw the string on the shorts to tighten them!! Cut the wu/cd short as I was caught for time and was thinking I wouldn't finish as I was labouring after the 1 mile warm up. Old bad stupid habits die hard and I made a bit of a balls of the session and was struggling at the end. Happy that it's done and the calf held together but my fitness has really gone the way of my belly, pear shaped.

    13 miles for the day:

    2 miles: 6.37, & 6.27
    7 miles: 6.50, 6.51, 6.50, 6.50, 6.28, 6.59 & 6.53
    2 miles: 6.44 & 6.37

Thats some workout man, give yourself the credit it deserves.
Very few of us would complete that at this time of year.

Despite the additional pounds (its Christmas after all) - thats 11 miles at faster than MP.
    Great going.

What was the aim of this session? Threshold/marathon pace/threshold>?

Massive session and proves you are in the nick for a sub three as is.

Not many about doing that at this time of year . good work

    Tnx A,

Never properly congratulated you on your fantastic achievement, I'm only leaking the last of the bitterness from my San Seb experience now. Really hoping to get that sub 3 hippopotamus off my back this year, but I've been here in 2013 and 2014 and 2015 and 2016!!!

    Christ I've been spectacularly unsuccessful

    Yep Youngrun,

Threshold plus slightly slower than MP but I made a bit of a bags of it and did the 7 miles too fast.

Not sure I'm in sub 3 territory yet as I was gassing a bit at the end.

Actually think I passed you on this run but as I don't see well without my glasses I wasn't sure.

Friday: S&C session early morning. If I can stick with this and not see it go the way of my yoga fad I think I'll really see big improvements.

Started out with some mobility exercises and then went into a routine of squats, lunges and other exercises. I found it very tough and my heart was pounding like a jackhammer.

I'd also had to do a exercise called the Spider-Man walk, I could see why it was called that when he was showing me how to do it, but I ended up doing it like a slug with a beer belly and by the end of it I was so tired my tongue was picking up carpet hairs from the gym floor!

Half an hour after the session I could still feel that I had an elevated heart rate! Found the session harder than yesterday's run session.

Had a long day at work yesterday and I had no love for a run but I forced myself out for 4 miles recovery. I couldn't believe how stiff and slow I was, I was ambling along like a semi tranquillised camel and couldn't get the pace below 9.30 (not that I was bothered).

    4 recovery miles @ 9.34

Today: 8 miles very easy, S&C session efforts still evident and ambled along at 9 minute pace.

I know that you travel a lot but when you're about ... there's a PT called Enda in the Kingfisher that does circuit style classes a good few times a week that incorporate all the exercises you seem to be doing and he's a big fan of the spider and bear crawl. Nice to be tortured work out in numbers :)

+1. Absolutely heartbreaking, and really puts everything into perspective.

Great to see the training going so well. Keep it up!

Today: had planned a long run but got up late and the day got a bit away from me. Ended up doing a 3 mile local loop incorporating a kids relay, it was very stop/start sort of run, eldest daughter was in a hurry so she would only cycle the first loop, then dropped her back home and picked up the the middle lad, he was up for it a bit more and did more than 2 laps on his bike and 2 miles run, dropped him home and continued on before picking up the 6 year old who ran a mile with me.

Out again and finished with 18 miles in total @ 8.44.

Ended up with 73 miles for the week off 6 days running but this was somewhat distorted by last Mondays LR.

Happy enough, now if I could only lose the belly...

Your fault alright, I was doing one handed handstands on the weighing scales this morning hoping it made me an ounce lighter.

Monday: slow tired 3 mile nursing home special.

Today: had a session down for today and decided to go large and see where I'm at. Roped ex National marathon champ in again to try and pace me around a 5,4,3,2,1 @ MP off half mile recovery. Headed to Dangan this morning to get this done and I was struggling from the start, got the 5 miles done but I was labouring big time. I had to take off the base layer I was wearing as I was sweating bullets. Felt momentarily better without it but half way through the 4 miles I knew my goose was cooked, effort level too high and I canned it after the 4 mile rep.

Very very tired and the auld body has a bit to do yet to be in sub 3 shape.

Bit disappointed but I'll crack on.

Off to London today for a couple of days so it'll only be a few easy miles over the coming days which mightn't be a bad thing.

    TbL

    6.44, 6.46, 6.58, 6.39, 6.43

    6.49, 6.57, 6.47, 6.48

No wonder you struggled if you were sweating bullets, how did the calf hold up?
