I can understand her logic for switching but how can she claim to still be proud to be Irish I she goes on to win a gold and sing god save the queen/king

She can't reach the level she wants to if she stays in Ireland. It's as simple as that.

As for "How can she claim to still be proud to be Irish", would you ever catch on to yourself :rolleyes:

We don't have a king our queen as our head of state. God save the queen is sung (if you read the words) as a song of allegiance to a saxe-coburg gotha monarch. I'm sure those two lads from cork could find another two equally brilliant British rowers to make a super gold winning fours.

She's entering a sailing competiton, not a singing contest. At the end of the day, the medal will be hanging on her wall and not that of a king/queen/president.

In fairness if you read the article she explains why she's representing Team GB. After Rio, her Irish partner retired and there is no other sailor of a similar level to her (now retired) partner to make a competitive duo for the Tokyo Olympics. So she found a partner in the UK who she can partner with.

For these athletes, the Olympics is the pinnacle of their career. Do people expect her to retire just because her partner did? Or should she do what she can to ensure she can compete one more time? I think anybody would do the latter.

You seem to be hugely focused on the singing of the anthem. There are plenty of people who aren't. As evidenced by the fact that there's a huge percentage of Irish people who don't know the words to Amhrán na bhFiann, much less what it means.

There wasn’t an option here in Ireland in the 49er FX with another girl who had the experience to sail at the same level that I had finished up at [in Rio], to be competitive and win a medal in 2020

Her partner retired, it's this or nothing. She should go for it.

No issue with that but she shouldn't go claiming she's still proud to be Irish when wearing a union jack and representing a monarch whose subjects have killed Irish men and women over the last 60 years in her name.

No because the English competing for us is one thing, but going and competing for a nation that occupied our country, stole 6 of our counties while deliberately stirring the troubles up and murdered so many innocent men women and children is a whole different kettle of fish

She switched because her partner retired. Her partner was a UK sailor who switched to Ireland in 2013.

I will never forget the outrage that switch of allegiance caused on AH.

Our national anthem is a battle cry, a call to arms to kill the (English) invaders.

And by the way for some of those competing for Ireland at the Olympics God Save the Queen is their national anthem.

Wow, I kinda thought we had move on from hating the English but this thread proves otherwise. In relation to her decision to move, she has to do what is best for her. It is not her ideal I'd imagine but she wants to compete and it's her best choice.

I doubt anyone will care in the intervening 3 & a half years but by god wait till we start claiming that medal if she gets on the podium in Tokyo.

She can be proud Irish and represent Team GB, they are not mutually exclusive.

Yet her father was kidnapped by the IRA, so her family suffered at their hands not the British. Case of pot calling the kettle black.

Best of luck to her, hope she achieves her goals. Shame she couldn't get a partner and support from the Irish Sailing.

Mentions god, so that discriminates against polytheists and Satanists. She is also the defender of the faith and the head of her own religion. I'd say that all qualifies as sectarian
