Are we due to see another set of Xeon D's with Kaby?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,615 ✭✭✭Revoker88

From what ive seen since yesterday kaby lake is no faster than skylake clock for clock. Looks like its clock speeds out of the box that kaby lake brings.

Not much data in the way of overclocking though,5Ghz 7700k anyone? :) Who knows though, bit underwhelming imo

I will have the funds together from the end of january for a cpu upgrade, hopefully ryzen will give me at least an option,if not im gonna go ahead with kaby lake

    Review on TPU

    https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i7-7700K_vs_6700K_Game_Performance/

Couldn't get it to 5Ghz on air, but seems to have more headroom thant the 6700k

It would be nice alright, but the Xeon Ds never really seemed to take off much, did they? There were quite a few C2750 boards out, but I've only seen one or two using the 1541/1521, and almost nowhere that stocks them.

Just finished the COD: Infinite Warfare campaign. Haven't been a fan of the last few games in multi-player and found the last few campaigns to be fairly generic as well but the IW one is the first I've genuinely enjoyed in ages. Reminds me of 'The Expanse' if you've seen the TV show. I think around Christmas it was under €15 new so it's worth a look at that price even just for campaign.

Not verified, but AMD Vega might outperform even GTX 1080 Ti.

I'll believe it when I see it. AMD have become victims of their own hype in the past.

So... Kabylake is really meh. Pretty much same as skylake. Is that just a sign that intel knows Zen is going to be crap and threw something out, or intel found out too late about zen and it will be a chance for AMD to catch up.

I think I will finally upgrade next year my 2500k, but I doubt I would bother with Kabylake. Skylake or Zen after knowing prices.

If its still doing the job, leave it alone no point in throwing money away. I assume you have it OC'd to near death?

I'm in two worlds if I should upgrade to Ryzen as my Xeon is still running fine.

Be great if it turns out to be true. Nvidia could do with some proper competition at the high end.

no need for upgrades, has anyone else been playing counterstrike classic offensive? I hadn't played anything in ages and it made me get the crt out to play at 150hz... it's like promod but for csgo.. and unlike promod people seemingly want to play it, over 200k downloads and it was only released on the 25th of december

    Were CRT's that fast?

I remember a good number of years ago when flat screen HD screens were a new thing and the article said you should buy a HD CRT as they were better. I looked and could not find any. They were probably available in America where that article was from.

yeah it's night and day between my ips display and the crt.

they don't do high refresh like that out of the box, I have it set to 1024x768 at 150hz

it'll happily do 2000+ pixels across resolutions too at lower refresh rates

those new 144hz panels would be better than a crt I'd say, since they will do 16:9 resolutions. I lose a decent portion of my field of view but I look with the mouse anyway.

it's unbelievably smooth feeling though, a whole other level compared to 60hz lcd panels or IPS with input lag

Picked up Xcom 2 there over the break, its a fun game with some nice neat little options. Anyone else playing?

Are there any actual benchmarks/reviews of ryzen yet? Curious about it and how it will be priced in comparison to 6700k/7700k

Was it just me or did the pricing jump when they changed them over from the Atom channel?

Its a shame, a 10/12 core process shrink on the 2750 would be lovely but probably very very niche.

Its at 4.4ghz right now. In fairness its still going strong with anything I throw at it.
Forza horizon 3, which is famously known for being **** with CPU is running 50-70fps all high with AA off at 3440x1440 with 1060!!!
The only game I play now that I bet CPU would help is ARMA 3 EXILE. I am diping to 30fps with mix of medium and high settings with a lot of eye candy off. Stupidly a lot off eye candy turned on to max do feck all to fps... my resolution is not helping this game one bit.

I do plan on refresh of my system next year, but Kaby really disappointed me. I wonder if I just sell my 1060 and get 1080 or new AMD card next year and keep going on my 2500k even longer! Intel really ****ed up with 2500k, way too good cpu. :)

Outside of the hype train, it looks like its being pitted against Broadwell E and the x99 platform, not the main consumer platform. The lowest reported model is a 4 core, 8 thread model which is on a par with skylake.

This time of year is always a bad time to upgrade hardware due to how much new stuff is about to hit the market. If Ryzen hits a good price/performance point and has decent motherboard support it could be a real game changer but I suspect Intel have something in the wings they could drop just incase.

I doubt they're holding anything back just in case. If AMD came out with something impressive, they could just do a price drop/ increase clock speeds.

Why hold something back, better to let it all go out and sell at a premium and if the competition comes out with something good, drop your prices a bit and keep raking it in.

Stuff on the secret shelf wont make any money for you.

And it's doing well compared against those processors in heavily multi-threaded apps but if what we've seen so far is accurate, then AMD's highest end Ryzen CPUs are still marginally slower than Skylake i5 in games - which means the mainstream CPU's will be likely considerably slower.

Can't wait to see some proper review benchmarks though and the pricing as well. I don't think I've been this enthused about a processor release in years.

Most big corporations like this have plans for years. Its a bit naive to say that they dont have stashed up stuff in back drawer.

No point throwing out new fast tech, if they dont have competition. They could have released a cpu almost twice faster, but whats then for next year release? Whats the point of it, when they already have massive market share.
Its more profitable to give small upgrades over and over, then just give everyone best thing ever and have no more sales. Its like cancer, its more profitable to treat it, then cure it.

AMD has to pull something out of their arse and give market a good shakedown. There is no competition in CPU desktop hardware. And I know some people will say that CPUs are at good price now and intel charging fair. I say bull**** to it and as consumer I see there is room to drop prices. AMD shaked cpu world once, maybe they can come back again. If not, its going to be same old intel builds, not because they are best, but because they are the only option.

i just built a 6700k +gtx1080 build in august and i am hoping amd do something great here to shake up both the cpu and gpu markets, both need a good reset in terms of price and performance (more so cpu's tbf)

I really hope AMD doesn't screw up with Ryzen, as the CPU market badly needs a shakeup as Intel have been releasing only slightly better chips each generation as can be seen with Skylake -> kabylake.

i was actually thinking about putting a 7700k into my z170 board but theres no point, just slightly higher clock speeds really

It did. They were pretty damn expensive in comparison, from what I remember. I think that could have also to do with the boards though. OEMs were putting SAS controllers and loads of other stuff on them to go along with the faster SoC.

Yeah, it would. Think I'm going to have to go ATX/EEB for my next upgrade. Waiting to see what Zen does to things first.

In fairness, aren't the 8 core Intel's also slower than the i5 as the clock speed is lower? I would expect higher clocks on the 4 core ryzen mainstream chips, similar to higher clocks on the i5 versus the Intel 8 core chips
