My point is if he cared he would solve the issue with one swipe and not be on tv "crying" about it.

Would he be then left to solve all the other issues that arise?

Embarrassing watching this guy, a multi millionaire crying on tv about homeless people when he could house those 40 people he cares so much about with the stroke of a pen. I wonder if he loses sleep about the issue from his high walled mansion. Or does he want people who actually pay tax in this country on the money they have earned to house them. A minimum wage worker probably has paid more towards social issues and services in this country than this guy and hes on tv crying.

We don't know his tax bill or its beneficiaries, or how much he's donated to the cause in monetary terms, or why he's picked this as something to invest his time in.

We do know is that he is one of the people who is not directly affected by the crisis but who has taken measures to try fix it. Which is a good thing in my books.

Aside from all that, if this whole thing was about 40 people then I suspect there wouldn't be any story or any threads talking about it. He and the rest of us are involved because the number is 6,000 and growing.

By your logic anyone who makes a success of themselves through their own hard work and enjoys very good finances as a result, should not dare speak of the wrongs in this country. Who are they to speak with all the money they have tut tut.

That's pretty much it. Don't mind you being successful, but STFU about it.

Watching celebrities latching on to feel-good causes is puke-inducing.

Reminds me, I must check how the Syrians are getting on at Bob's house...

No, your point is you begrudge Hansard for becoming successful and agitating for a cause that you probably dispise

I dont begrudge him at all . I love millionaires and I aspire to be one soon. And if I do aquire millions such as glen i will make a donation rather than look for notice on tv.

I'm sure you would be aware of the homeless as you step over them. That's not the same as trying to actually do something about it. Hansard isn't screaming 'give me your ****ing money' he's trying to get the government to uphold their responsibilities and quite possibly they could have shamed them into doing that.

He is screaming, 'give me your ****ing money', in an indirect manner. If he succeeds in shaming the government into action, i.e. giving these people free housing, then the tax payer is the person who is going to foot that bill. Why don't we tax artists and the arts like the rest of us and direct that money to fund homeless services? Let's see how receptive these people are to that suggestion!

I think you missed the sarcasm in there. How are the Syrians getting on in your house though do tell?

It is the outright false pretences that annoy me. There are beds available already. The ones on the street are on drink or drugs, of which they have stated Apollo house is a dry hostel.

Then there is the "selection" process of the 35-38 beds. You go to a soup kitchen and get "referred" to Apollo house. So we can take it they are very selective of who gets in to make sure it doesn't blow up in their face.

There is a massive issue of fake news at the moment. Non reporting of issues behind the news should also be classified as fake news.

So celebrities have a history of latching on to movements that are already popular. When did a celebrity ever take a genuine risk getting behind an unpopular cause?

No skin in the game. That's why no-one takes them seriously.

No, Irish people begrudging anyone who does a good deed is embarrassing. He goes out every Christmas and raises money for homeless charities - more than you've been doing, that's for sure.

Except of course and this a good one, it is not up to Glen Hansard to house 40 homeless people (even if he is one of many actually housing these 40 homeless people over the Christmas at least) it's up to the mighty government of ours. You know, the people we elect to run our affairs and make sure s**t like homelessness doesn't happen.

They're doing a whole lot more right now than you or I that's for sure. If there is anything embarrassing its your post and the way you and many like you think.

    Errr No its not.

Is that not chicken and egg.

The movement Dylan got onto was inspired by Guthrie before him - it is a flow all the way back. Even before music was commercial.

Arthur McBride is about 180 years old.

Republican songs were incredibly important to the Irish cause.

Live Aid was very fast and early in the cause.

It is utter cynicism to think it wasn't based on an ideal.

Bob Marley did the same about the cause for African americans - Indians.

Ridiculous to think all of these were not based on a youthfull ideal , you are suppose to have a cause when you are younger.

    What guilt do you have.

You should only have guilt if you are guilty.

Not all of them. Many are on the street as it's simply just too dangerous to stay in the facilities available. Cop on and dont make rediculous sweeping generalisations.

Let's hope Glen doesn't try to house the twats from Belvo who sleep out for a night, I'm not sure the country could survive a vortex of vapid moralising on that scale.

The mere notion that you cannot raise awareness for a huge social crisis in your country because you are a millionaire is nothing other than laughable. Maybe if the man was evading tax you would have a point but other than that the OP is talking through his hat.

I suppose Band-Aid was a ridiculous idea too. All those millionaires raising awareness for famine, starvation and premature death in Africa, how dare they!

Leinster House will be free for Christmas (free for most of the year as well).

What good is awareness? Im sure 99% of the country are already "aware" of the "Homeless Problem". Its peddled in the media every 2nd day.

It's wrong surely to see whats going on there but the question I ask myself is if it was a cancer care unit in Sligo being shut down how many of these guys would turn up with their guitars?
