I love how the ad says, "I bought this car 5weeks ago and it started first time "

Lol. How is that a positive piece of information. I imagine a potential sale could go like this.

Potential Buyer: How does she run ?
Seller: The engine is b0lloxed, but dont worry it started for me one time about 5 weeks ago. Its grand. "

haha new version of the "was mint before crash" sales pitch that somehow adds magic value to a turd.

How many '85 Carina's you think are left in Ireland? There is 19 registered in all of the UK. Man has something rare and is entitled to name his price. That Carina has more street cred than most the VW/Audi rep mobiles many on here fawn over.

Words don't fail me, I'm a car fanatic, the effort and care required for that car after all these years to be in that condition is commendable. It is a cool car.

    Because its an '85 reg?
The Carina was (just as the Avensis that replaced it) just a regular family car, it wasn't a head turner in 1985.
I don't think a golf gti or 205 gti of that era in that condition would even make 6k!

The amount of insecurity about VW around this place is gas everything has to be about how something compares to VW lol.

Vw bland/rep mobiles and this carina are not even in the same ball park, Which one would i like to drive 400 miles a week in or hit a wall in ? or which one would you like to drive to a car show once or twice a summer....

    Street cred is for teenagers.

The Carina is a cool car, it's up to seller what price they name, don't make everything about VW and also don't refer to other peoples cars as ****e boxes (jut a general thing i've seen creeping in here again)

Not seeing the attraction of what was a fairly normal car for time. Each to their own though. I'd much rather a 205 gti though i would settle for the golf cabriolet below.

Such is the life cycle of cars if they last long enough they can become cool with age. Cortina's, Granada's, Ascona's, Sierra's etc when in mint condition are cool in my eyes. Of course the two GTi's will trump it, seen a lovely Renault 5 Turbo on DD there today as well.

I'd agree with most of that. I've no insecurity about VAG cars, just VW/Audi would best describe the most commonly sought after models in Ireland at the moment. 10 years ago maybe I would have said Toyota/Fords. Neither did I call anything a s****box.

I'm of an age where I should think that 85 Carina is cool...but it's not. It's as ugly today as it was the day it left the factory. If it was the RWD one before it...yes, yes that would be very cool.

 well, I also compared it to a Peugeot
The manufacturers I mentioned are irrelevant.
If the in demand cars of that era (i just gave an example of two), in the same condition are making less money, then price tag doesn't seem realistic.

In 30 years from now, would you pay more for a 171 mint ford mustang, or a 171 mint ford mondeo!

It's not even the mildly desirable 1.8 V6. The car's OK, but it's worth sod all, maybe a grand to somebody who wants one. It's not even an original Irish car which affects the owner's classic car delusions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Honestly, the fact that it's an Autozam only adds to its value.
For example, if someone owned an Italian 250 GTO would you say the car's classic status is questionable because it started its life in Italy?
Yeah, of course not. That's just stupid.

I decided to get in contact with an ad which had an email like that (to see what they had to say).

Ad for sale by a woman called Hazel, number linked to a woman's Facebook called Alison, and the guy emailing me was called Jeffrey. Car for sale in Killarney but he claimed that he is now living in Belfast & if I was interested then I would have to buy the car first (paying via PayPal), then the car would be delivered to me and I'd have 7 days to request a refund if I was not happy with the car.

    All seems legit :pac:

The price is very expensive and the car is ordinary enough with that engine but you won't come across many crx's in that kind of condition.

He had another one in similar condition and with similar mileage but with the proper dohc vtec engine and a nicer mettalic grey colour for few k extra. You can see it in the background in shed on some of those pics.

Given the Japanese market and how older cars are very expensive to own and drive I doubt it. It's a crazy price, but it looks to be in immaculate condition. Then again it's a dealer and in the vintage trade end they'll often try a hail mary price to check the state of the market.

All it takes is a couple of a model's examples, even one to reach a silly price at a well known auction house and the market will follow. Look what happened to 205 GTi and Sierra Cosworth prices, never mind Mark 1 and Mark 2 Ford Escorts.

The "money" has moved into that end of the market as the more exotic stuff got too daft in "value" and/or the supply ran out. With few exceptions the Jap stuff hasn't really caught on just yet, or at least to that extent, but it's ripe to do so. Consider this: as JohnBoy26 noted, he has another one only with the VTEC engine and for more money and it looks like that one sold.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭Cheensbo

I wouldn't think any more than 3-4k at auction?

And then double it to get it to Dublin...

You'd land a good example of a sir one for less than the asking of your man's, but the finishing prices of most of the interestinf 90s jap stuff is gone crazy. I put it down to the feckin yanks tbh :(

    €10k for a 88 Mercedes W124..

in its favour it will qualify for vintage tax in a year or so, and its had a good bit of work done to it, but.....

if you're after such a thing, I'd go for the more original look, not oversized wheels, non-standard interior.

Missus paid €3k less than that for a same year - low mileage coupe example, from a main dealer, 3.5 years ago.

Funny enough right now is a perfect time to buy convertible. Prices are always lower in winter times and you can properly check leaking roofs in **** weather. :)
