And point out that the issue deserves to be treated a bit more coherently than dumping them in buildings due to be demolished.

By dumping them into the cold street instead.

Stop harping on about legal costs you soulless grinch. Doubt you live near Dublin and see the extent of the homeless crisis on a daily basis? We waste enough tax money unnecessarily and this is once cause I'm happy to see it wasted on.

So your happy to see every cent thats donated to this cause wasted? Cus thats whats gonna happen when they get turfed out of the building, every single second of time energy and money put into it will be for naught and all the money that could have been used creating more permanent arrangements and funding other charities that are better equipped will have been pissed down the drain

Pathetic people complaining about this, utterly pathetic. We really are a nation of begrudgers. Well done to all involved i'll be making a donation myself today.

Well said. €100k will probably cover the legal costs in a court until lunch time.

I don't understand the purpose of this cause to be honest and I don't mean that in a cynical way, I genuinely don't comprehend what they are trying to achieve. Is there a shortage of beds in Dublin for homeless people? I thought the reason people were sleeping rough was due to hostels not allowing drugs or alcohol or mental illness, which are problems that should absolutely be addressed but is that what the Apollo House occupation is about? Is it anything to do with the people who are homeless but not sleeping rough - those who are being accommodated in hotels and B&Bs? If this about raising awareness of homelessness, then to what end?

It's begrudgery to point out that this does not address the issue at all and will only result in Court orders and huge costs?

I disagree. I think it's a campaign that shows how easily led some are, a few fellows playing guitar appeals to the virtue signallers on Facebook, granted, who can fake concern and then move along once the orders to vacate are enforced. And then maybe Ed Sheeran will sing a song for a child in hospital and that group will have another issue to feel good about themselves and how concerned they are.

I think it must be about awareness rather than a practical solution, because it obviously isn't a practical solution.

Its about awareness of how much Brendan Ogle and Glen Hansard 'care'. Those guys care a lot, but much of it goes unreported. We all need to raise our awareness about how much they care, so, next year, whenever the issue of homelessness is discussed on our media, we can ignore the people who quietly work day in and day out on the issue and go directly to Glen Hansard (or Damien Dempsey if Glen is off in LA or somewhere) who will be able to tell us what to so (or at the very least, tell us what we aren't doing right).

I think I've been hiding under a rock. What's happening here. Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5?

Bunch of z list celebrities remebered they were Irish and decided to come home for chsirtmas. They then decided to get up on a high horse provided by brendan ogle and a few other professional protestors and the anti-everything crowd and proceed to tell us all how **** we are and ashamed of ourselves we should be.

The illegally took over a building and are now diverting money away from other charities that count on at this time of year into an actual real money pit.

They then sang on a roof and some people thought it was the 2nd coming of christ

If one of the homeless people slip in a puddle in apollo house and break their pelvis, who will they sue?

Also Sweden has 34,000 homeless people. If i read one more crooks in government comment on the journal... This is western capitalist society. Unless Richard Boyd Barrett makes his own clothes, he is taking part in it every day as we all are. Whats the solution?

If those guys weren't involved the people who broke into Apollo house would have been kicked out by now and it wouldn't have made the newspapers.
Hansard plays gigs for the homeless all the time yet the problem is getting worse.

Sweden probably counts anyone who ever accidently locked themselves out of their gaf as homeless.

:pac: Thanks for that. It just about encapsulates what I think about celebs getting involved in issues like this.

    Coincidence?

Glen Hansard's singing doesn't solve the problem. It just makes them move somewhere else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,167 ✭✭✭Fr_Dougal

We're going to need a Bono and a Bob, Glen can't do this on his own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,687 ✭✭✭andekwarhola

More power to them for doing their bit for the homeless but the thought of persistent, impromptu 'jams' invloving Damien Dempsey, Glen Hansard and Mundy turn the blood to ice.

I'm just waiting - with no small amount of terror - for the news that In Tua Nua and Emotional Fish have spontaneously reformed and are on the way into Hawkins Street with acoustic guitars, beanie hats and hessian weave sleeping bags.

Rich boy Barrett on the radio claiming if any government can't put a roof over all its citizens heads then it has to go.

So that's all the government's in every country in the world rich boy?

What will we do then? Just a free for all with noone in charge?

This is my problem with the thing. its not about rough sleepers ( which i honestly do think Hansard cares about). if it was only the rough sleepers i would be 100% behind it.

But this whole campaign about houses for all i just cant get behind, it irritates me the level of entitlement it promotes, it sickens me how they choose a monumental moment in our nations history as a way to whip people into a frenzy ( i honestly doubt Pearse stood on the steps of the GPO predicting the social welfare culture that is a drain on the nation he so passionately wanted)

yesterday the homesweethome campaign tweeted this

    DO THE MATH
    Empty homes = 193,000
    Homeless People = 6500
Local Authority houses built in 2015 = 75
People on housing lists = 130,000

I would love to find out the breakdown of these numbers, are the empty homes in the same places as the people on the housing list, if they are give them the homes. if there not offer the homes and if declined come off housing lists.

If your waiting on a home you dont get a choice, use the simplistic logic the tweet above shows.

you will then see how absolutely ridiculous stuff like the above tweet is.

the only job it's done is wasting Garda resources that could be put to much better use elsewhere.

The occupation of Apollo House is illegal - end of. Shouldn't have be done in the first place.

There is a rather large difference between something being wrong to do and something being Illegal.
