I've done it, everything working perfectly. Some devices couldn't see the 5ghz network until I realised it was set to the U.S. I have the printer working too. One problem that I can't seem to sort is getting the VM modem into bridge mode, I've searched and searched its limited menu but cannot for the life of me find the bridge mode option. I'm on ipv4 and VM reps here turned wi-free off this morning. If anyone could help me put the final piece of the puzzle in place I'd be eternally grateful.

I got it into modem mode. Turned out I wasn't resetting the modem properly, I pushed the reset button for timed 20 seconds, then when it was fully up and running I switched it off for a timed 60 seconds, modem mode was then available. After enabling modem mode I had no internet connection as the fixed ip between the modem(DMZ rule) and the C8 was now invalid. I changed the ip setting in the C8 from fixed to dynamic and everything is working perfectly. Phew I'm glad it's done tbh, well worth it though. Using the tplink USB dongle on the laptop Im getting 233 meg download consistently in speed tests.
Next project? Dump the power line adapters and wire in a gigabit switch, more cursing and sweating lies ahead, all in the name of progress!!!

I have the C8 and 240mb . Getting great speeds thanks to this thread - and my crappy cisco doesn't restart every 20 minutes like it used to. Very impressed with the C8 and speed/coverage.

Now, though - Virgin have offered me the new 'Virgin media hub'. I'm a big fan of 'if it's not broke, don't fix it', so should I take them up on their offer? How does bridging etc work with the new hub?

Apologies if this has been asked before. There's loads of pages to read through.

Probably no advantage in getting the hub with your present setup, you'll only be using it in modem mode the same as your cisco is doing now. Most likely the new hub will be broadcasting the wi-free signal which will need to be disabled by VM before the modem only option appears in the menu. I wouldn't do it.

From page 1 of this thread
Important new information about Virgins new 360Mb/s service below

Since writing the below guide, Virgin has now launched a new 360Mb/s service and that now offers an alternative solution to fixing wireless problems with Virgins 240Mb/s service. If you sign up to the new 360Mb/s service, Virgin will supply you with a new router that supports 802.11ac wireless

I am about to get the new Virgin new router that supports 802.11ac wireless

However I have an existing TplInk Archer C8 and am currently using this connected to the old Virgin Modem (non 802.11ac)
For users here who have the Virgin new router that supports 802.11ac wireless up and running, do you find it as good , or better as the Archer c8 in terms of speed

We have
2 Android Phones both WIFI AC
Two Android Tabs both WIFI AC
I laptop WIFI AC
and 1 Android Set top Box, Non AC, but using network cable RJ45, (unfortunately the NIC is limited to 100mb - not 1gb)
This is a limitation of (Minix) Android Set top Box,

I dont have a need for , sharing a Printer or HDD, Guest Wifi, Parental controls etc. that the C8 can offer
Thanks

I have the C8 setup and definitely find it better than the original VM modem.

We had the old UPC Technicolor modem working with an Archer C9 and had a near perfect connection, few issues. I decided to go for the VM Hub and after a bit of tweaking with the Archer C9, we're getting similar speeds. I have 2 devices using 5Ghz and the rest using 2.5Ghz. Not sure I'd bother getting the Hub after a weekend of messing with it to be honest. Maybe others are happier.

I am now noticing the 5Ghz dropping quite regularly though, is there a Channel anyone can recommend for 5Ghz, currently set to Auto?

The 5Ghz has no penetration power. I have a netgear router and the 5Ghz drops at certain places in the house (it's not a big house). Great as long as you have line of site. Penetrates one block wall but not two.

We're the same, in a small house but 5Ghz appears to drop within an 8 foot range from the router, in the same room, nothing blocking it, which never happened before. Going to place the router on top of a higher piece of a furniture to see if it makes any difference. Testing channels and currently 48 seems happiest but will more need time to test.

I signed up to the new 360Mb/s service , and virgin sent out a new router the Hub 3, which should provide decent dual band wifi

From testing it wired I got 360 mbs

Wireless much less 40/50 > I know my wireless devices are capable of much faster, because using the old Virgin router and hard wired to it, my Archer C8 , used to get 120 to 240 wifi

i decided to use my c8 again, but noticed when connected to the Archer c8.now get 40/50

I rang UPC and connected to the Gui of the hub 3 http://192.168.0.1

Disable 5 GHz and Disable 2.4 GHz are now ticked
Whenever I Enabled Modem Mode, the process hung, and still is at Router Mode

Tech support at UPC did not know how to Enable Modem Mode remotely

Am I correct in saying , I need to Enable Modem Mode , and do i need to configure wins / dns or similar in the Archer

Thanks

Are you broadcasting the Horizon free Wi-Fi? If you are you need to get VM to disable it from their end, the reps here will do it for you. If not, after you disabled both WiFi channels try restarting the router and then enabling modem mode. If you successfully enable modem mode,in the C8,Internet-WAN connection type, change it to dynamic, click detect and you have a connection. Don't forget the ip of the VM modem changes to 192.168.100.1 when in modem mode, a pin reset of the VM modem will put it back to router mode if needed.

The new hub is garbage. Fine wired, wifi is rubbish. Had 40mb download via wifi with it. Put it into modem mode and went back to my C8 and getting 140mb down over wifi.

Read your own posts?

If you'd paid attention reading the OP....
8) Connect an ethernet cable from any LAN port on your UPC modem to the WAN port on your new router.

Don't need to be Steve Wozniak.

There's a lot of that around here. I'll give you a hand. Is the VM hub in modem mode? It's in modem mode when the light on the front is Magenta in colour. Connect your Cat5e or Cat6 cable from the port nearest the cable entering the VM hub (port 4) to the WAN port (coloured blue labeled Internet) on the TpLink. Enter the interface of the TpLink 192.168.0.1 In the left column select Internet, in WAN connection type, select "dynamic ip" in the drop down menu then click the "detect" button. That should get you sorted. Let me know if you have problems.

ok this is the story. I have virgin media HUb 3.0, there is no option as it was before turn hub in modem mode when you log in. I turned off wifi, connected everything over cat6 cable to TP link c9. When i connect cable to virgin media hub im getting 242/25 transfer, also when i connect cable to tp link im getting 240/25 without any problem, but when i connect to wifi, same room, from router 4 met away im getting max 50/25. I have hp laptop 17inch one year old. :)

Hope this helps. Also when Im doing speed test over htc mobile im getting the same speed over the mobile only 50/25. (new mobile old 5 months).

I dont have any colour displayed on virgin media hub, (white one), nothing just when turn on, wifi is red but two buttons bellow are green, then after few min all turn black (no colour whatsoever).

• Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 24 Dalmatia

im not even sure how to know did i put virgin media hub in mode mode. i followed everything to the letter from 1st page and still no idea. Looked over the internet with previous software you could manually just change hub to modem mode, now there is no possibilities to do that. What is frustrating taking exams and i ruined already one laptop as i fell over the cable (cant see very well in front of me) that is the reason to take wifi.

http://192.168.0.1 = when i put this in search im getting connected to virgin media hub asking my password not the password from tp link.

ok, have you changed the address of the Tplink to 192.168.1.1 as per the guide? If so, thats what you need to enter the admin of the Tplink. Getting back to the VM hub. Two things have to be done before the Modem mode option will be available. 1)You need to have an Ipv4 ip address, contacting the reps on here will get that sorted.
2) If your hub is transmitting the Horizion Wi Free wireless signal, it needs to be disabled. That needs to be done by VM who can do it here as well. When both of these things are done, a factory reset of the VM hub will then give you the option to use modem mode.

can i call free number 1908 to get ipv4 address, also when i get address how to put, factory reset i can put needle in the back of virgin media hub
