Just to update you guys.. I'm still waiting for my appointment and everytime I ring the hosp they tell me I'm on a waiting list which I've been on since the beginning of August !!

    Hi,

Ring them back and tell them your willing to go on the cancellation list, I found this either bumps you up the list or you can get a genuine cancellation..

The only thing is you may only have a couple of days notice.

    PS,

I felt very dehydrated the morning of the procedure and without thinking drank a lot of water, the nurse happened to see this and cancelled the it. They will not take a chance with water from the stomach coming back into the lungs whilst your out, so just be careful.

    Ha Ha...

Funny enough I've drank the movi prep stuff probably 6 times now and never had an issue, and after the procedure I actually feel brilliant for a few days, something to do with your system being cleaned of all the toxins etc.

The Liquid Valium didn't work the last time and I heard the whole conversation whilst being 'interfered' with so to speak..

A lot depends on the hospital your looking to get an appointment with, I got my appointment 3 times in the past 8 years within 6-8 weeks (James Connolly)

If it's something that is hugely concerning to you, perhaps you should speak to your GP about them either sending another letter, or the possibility of going privately for the procedure. I can't remember off the top of my head how much the scope is but I don't think it was more than €600 for everything (health insurance paid).

Unfortunately the list tends to be prioritised based on need. Some symptoms will be seen as more urgent than others.

    Unfortunately!!!????

What criteria would you like to see it based on?

Unfortunately for the OP and others in the situation. I wouldn't change the criteria one bit - it should be on the basis of need.

I have been in a similar situation but with a different specialty. I was referred as "routine" and there was an 18 month waiting list. I went private, had the issue fixed with surgery, and was discharged, all within 4 months. So it was more serious than just "routine" but there just wasn't the resources available.

If symptoms worsen, talk to your GP. Otherwise it's just a waiting game unfortunately.

ah lads,,, he clearly meant unfortunately for the poster...
are you sure you are ringing the right place in the hospital, i know i need to ring bed management not the clinic or my consultant... maybe try them...

Yeah they gave me two numbers for the clinic and in the beginning they answered when I rang but they haven't answered in a few weeks.. they must see my number pop up and think 'not answering this one' haha

I know the wait in St. James' is very long just didn't think I would be waiting this long

I would agree with the poster who said go back to your GP. If they referred you they obviously had reason to do so. If they had a serious concern then maybe they can try to hurry things along or refer you to somewhere with a shorter waiting list. If it's just an exploratory exam then they can reassure you that it's not an urgent procedure.
But don't let it continue on..it's more often the waiting that's more distressing than getting the procedure done...

Be persistent and best of luck..

I can assure you that doesnt happen in a hospital...
I can tell you that i say my specialist in the first week of September, and rang this week wondering where my letter was and was told it would be mid March/April time before i would be scheduled for my dual scopes, she told me there is a huge backlog from the summer and with christmas there will be another one...

maybe is the same in dublin?
i can only echo what other posters have said and thats go back to your GP, i went back to mine for a second opinion last week he gave me new meds to try for two weeks and if they dont work he will refer me to the second opinion...

Thats great news, how long were you waiting in the end? I'm waiting 8 months now and nothing yet for an 'urgent' case :(

When you say urgent, has your specialist said urgent or your gp or are you saying it's urgent?
I have a friend (only know her from waiting rooms etc) that was urgent and was seen in two days, I was hospitalised for dehydration and malnutrition but am not considered an urgent case... last saw my specialist in august September time have my scopes (both ends oh joy) at the end of Feb. Sometimes the definition of urgent varies by doctor...

When I rang to check they had my referral they said it had been flagged as urgent but I'm not sure if that was something that my GP put on it or if it is decided by the dept doing the scope.

If you haven't seen a specialist then it's by the go which I think they take with a pinch of salt, I'm sure everyone's gp marks them as urgent....
Hope you get a spot soon, have you asked to be on the cancellation list?

No haven't spoken to them since July when they confirmed they had the referral and that its typically a 12-18 month wait time currently. Can I just call them and ask to be put on cancellation list?

I'm heading in for mine this Friday. It will be my third one and first in the public system. That word, kleenprep, strikes fear in my heart and poor ol bowels. Vile stuff. I struggle to drink a litre of water never mind when it has something rotten mixed in. This time around however I am getting an enema beforehand. I don't know why. Also there is no mention of anaesthetic just sedation. I'm assuming all they will give me is a valium or maybe sedation is anaethesia.

    I might not go :(

sounds like its a GP referal opposed to a consultant referral? and yeah of course you can ring and ask to be put on the cancellation list.

Just wanted to post my two cents here. Today I had both an endoscopy and colonoscopy in St.James's.

First thing; bring some entertainment. You will be waiting >4 hours if my experience is anything to go by. Staff are all lovely though :)

Before my procedures I did all of my research and decided on no sedation. That's right, no sedation for either the tube down or up.

Boy am I glad I did! It really is not that bad at all! The endoscopy is the worse of the two and that is just because of the momentary retching when it comes to the tube. That only lasts >5 minutes if not less.

The colonoscopy is a peace of cake. I only felt discomfort and sort of cramping, nothing major. I was offered pain relief through a gas but refused, it lasts only seconds and is more than bearable. Throughout this multiple biopsies were taken (A little metal clasp that is put into the scope and a piece of the colon is taken out), you do not feel this, or only feel a sort of 'twang'.

Throughout the procedure I could view the screen (Not during endoscopy as I had to face the consultant.) and it was very interesting, not to mention chatting to the team!

All in all I estimate the two procedures took 25 minutes, all done at once.

The benefits of no sedation are clear; you can leave literally 20 minutes after you finish. However long it takes you to feel comfortable, put on your clothes and talk to the nurses. You can also go alone with no accompanying person. I also find it totally demystifies the procedure and you realise how bearable it is.

Now, as always, you mileage will vary. It would depend on the skill and understanding of your consultant and staff. The nurses were suprised that I was going down the no sedation route but the consultant was not. She had no trouble and didn't question it, just said that the sedative helps anxious people etc.

If anyone wants anything answered about the procedures, PM me.:)

Now that I've decided I'm definitely going I'm quite looking forward to being sedated. I will float away on a cloud of nonchalance. Feelings be gone!
