    Hey Guys,

My GP referred me for a colonoscopy for St. James' hosp in Dublin. I haven't received my appointment date yet in the post but does anyone have any idea how long I'll be waiting for the procedure?

Also if anyone could inform me of what to expect that would be great! lol

    Thanks in advance :)

I got one within three weeks earlier this year, may have been a small bit longer.

i cant comment on the wait list however colonoscopy's im a dab hand at.

it depends on what the doctor is looking for but in general the prep is the same, your letter will have a prescription for kclean prep and/or picolax or something of the sort.

    laxatives basically.

3-4 days before you are asking to go on a low fibre diet, the one thing i would say is remember the lighter you eat leading up the the clean out of your bowels the better.

i once had a macdonalds before i took the stuff and literally almost died. imaging mcnuggest flying out your bumhole at speeds of 60km/h basically

jelly, soup, broth are all grand low impact foods bascially, no red meat lettuce seeds or nuts etc the list will be on your letter so dont worry.

depending on when your scop is morning or afternoon you will take the prep either the day before or the night before.

again is varies by person but make sure you have:
a hoodie, your phone, baby wipes, sudocrem, a bath if you can, something to read, watch to entertain yourself and an open window.

you take the prep mixture and relax for about 1/2 an hour, your stomach gurgles and whooosh its like the opening of damn.

within a few hours you will have the cleanest bowel/colon/ rectum in the world.

some people suffer terrible with *cough cough* ring burn fromt he liquid poop some people dont,

I always have the same routine, drink the prep, open a window in the bathroom, run a luke warm bath, set up the laptop and let it run its course.

it doesnt hurt per say, its been crampy and the liquid coming out your bum isnt pleasent but and remember this the lighter your diet has been in the days leading up to starting the easier it will be.

follow the instructions and you will be grand. but trust me on the baby wipes. ;-)

one the day you go in, they give you those fancy lookin hospital gowns, you can either be knocked out or not, ive been both, was kinda cool watching my bum bits on TV lolz you come around, they make you eat some toast drink some tea, fart alot depending on how much air they pumped into you and off you go home.

Ive crohns so i've had emergency ones and the routine ones. i used always panic about being cleaned out enough and sure it turns out if you have to have an emergency one they can see just the same.

    best of luck.

    pm me if you need.

    @livedadream
Thanks for your reply! It made me lol!!

At least I now know what to expect! Yano yourself when its your first time having something like this done you always expect the worst! The thought of it is always worse!

I've heard the stuff you take the day before is vile but sure look it has to be done! Thanks again :D

its not that bad tasting to be honest, and yeah i know what you mean, i got so worked up for my first one it was brutal.

trust me once you have one you get used to them, i get them frequently now due to my crohns diagnosis and have no qualms about bums up when needed. i used to be so embarrassed and shy with the doctors and nurses and now i dont really care anymore, as long as your clean their happy.

    best of luck with it.

@livedadream - I am expecting a colonoscopy sometime this year/next year as I have no explanation for chronic bowel problems (not asked for one yet as I am nervous) but I was taking notes from your tips. Great.

I never trust a fart, I am on 2 sachets of movicol every day for the rest of my life :p

I just need to bite the bullet and ask, might leave it till I am home again next summer, unless I get worsening symptoms and need to get one in England.

Also, let us know how you get on GingerNut93, I would be interested in hearing how it goes, and hopefully they get an answer for you.

Op: back to your question RE wait times. If your referral is gp open access direct referral then the triaged priority is totally down to the consultant discretion. They have ultimate say as to whether you are urgent, routine or in need of surveillance follow up (usually for people with a diagnosis or significant family history). The guidelines are as follows: urgent - within 4 weeks. Routine - within 16 weeks. However, there is a national problem with wait times for routine so I would advise you to ring the hospital, ask for the appointments office for endoscopy referrals and they'll tell you where you are on the waiting list.

My GP actualy told me to ring the hosp and ask them how long I will be waiting. My Doc will have sent the letter 2 weeks Monday so I might ring them either in the morning or monday and see can they tell me anything.

Do you think they could give me a roundabout time I'll be waiting?

Kinda want to get it done and over with so I can find the root of my problem and sort it out

    Thanks for your advice :)

Have both up and down cameras tomorrow. I've had the down one before but this is the first colonoscopy. My stomach one was only a month ago, had a consult with the surgeon 2wks ago,ct scan last week and this tomorrow. So I guess I'm on the Urgent list.

I'm still struggling to finish the Klean Prep. Only got a phone call about the appt. yesterday evening so I didn't have a chance to eat light over the last few days.

How long after the Klean Prep is finished should I be finished with the toilet section of my evening?? I'm only producing a pale yellow liquid now.

Literally the vilest thing I've ever tasted...

Give them a ring. Referrals can sometimes get lost etc. Also if you live nearby and/or can take leave at work at short notice tell them that you are happy to take a cancellation at short notice. (Once you have enough time to do your prep!)

I usually did a clear out before I even started on klean prep - I wouldn't do anything again until after about 1.5 litres of the stuff...I only managed about 2.5 litres and some came straight back up the other way. Couldn't hack klean prep at all. Worst day of my life trying to get that down me. I'd be fine on the 2.5 litres, you'll go on and off tomorrow morning also. I wouldn't wake up over night needing to go.

Good luck. Hope you're finished with the prep by now. Horrible stuff. I think I had more mi wadi mixed in with it than I had water, was still horrid. Can't drink mi wadi anymore. :(

I had a nightmare last year waiting for one. Was originally referred January 5th...expected to hear in March. Heard nothing. Had a big race in June and didn't want it curtailed if I had bad news so just left it. Rang in early July, consultants secretary nearly had a heart attack. They put me through as urgent, by September I still hadn't heard, rang back and they hauled me in to clinic. They put me through as urgent again on September 9th - still didn't have procedure until November 13th! Literally nearly a year waiting, consultant practically accused me of sabotaging my own procedure rather than actually trying to figure out why, if he referred me twice, it hadn't gone through...

That's horrific. I hope all went OK for you in the end. I'm hoping I'm getting through pretty quickly because I'm just lucky not because they've spotted something "sinister" as my consultant terms it.

I've finished the prep. What I was producing went slightly darker again. I also only managed about 2.5 ltrs. I just couldn't stomach any more. I took much longer to drink it as well but if I'd gone any quicker I'd have thrown the whole lot up!!

If they say I'll need another one, I'll be politely declining, sinister or not. How the hell in this day and age they haven't come up with a better way of cleaning out your system is beyond me.

    Thanks for your reply.

There are a couple of other solutions they can use - the name of the other escapes me at the minute. It's meant to be better but I don't think it is. I'm pretty sure you don't need 4 litres - they tell you 4 in the hope you get about 3 in I reckon.
If they ask you to do another, which hopefully they don't, ask is there anything else you can take. There is definitely at least one other solution which is also a smaller quantity.

When I had mine - it was a two day fast (just liquids - Bovril etc) and then picolax I think it was called? A couple of small glasses was all it took - that other stuff sounds horrid altogether.
    Good luck with your procedure.

Just a short follow up: My colonoscopy came back clear, just mild diverticulitis. I was completely unconscious for it which was a relief....I've also had a CT scan and MRI on a mass on my liver which they're not able to clear yet. So I'm waiting for a biopsy to be done on that. At least I don't have to go through the Klean Prep again..... So a mixed bag of good/maybe not so good news..... Staying positive though......

I'm waiting over a year now, thankfully it's only a check up. Disturbing to think there's probably urgent cases waiting!

Thanks for your follow up! That's some what good news to hear!

I'm still waiting to be given an appointment date.. I've been ringing the clinic and no one is even answering now.. I'd imagine I won't get an appointment until the new year which is annoying! Oh so they knocked you out completely for the procedure ?

Not a GA just very strong sedation. When I had the camera down the throat (OGD) previously, I was very aware of what was going on. So I asked them this time to give me loads of sedation and all I remember is being given the injection.
I woke up just after they wheeled me back to the day ward. So I've no memory of it.
When the nurses were doing the prep they told me to make sure to tell them in the theatre that I wanted loads of sedation.
I had no side effects, TBH I thought I'd be a little bit sore but nope, felt perfect!!

I'm sorry you're still waiting. At my last consult I got a sneaky peek of my records on the computer screen and they've all been marked Urgent so I'm assuming that's why I've been seen so quick.

Is there any possibility you could go private and pay for your scan? Could you physically visit the clinic and see what's going on?

Unfortunately I can't afford private it's around €1800 and my student life just does not cover that! I'll just have to wait it out and see what happens.

I'll keep you update on when I eventually get a date!

I'm getting mine done for the first time on Friday morning after waiting 15 months!!

I was actually referred for an appointment from the hospital, not my GP, as I had already being visiting the hospital and had a procedure done.

I rang at least half a dozen times in that time and was just told I was on the list and it was very long. I've been to my GP numerous times in that time so Friday has been a long time coming.

I've been attending Beaumont but received a registered letter from the HSE two weeks ago saying that because I had been waiting so long that they were getting me seen as soon as possible and I had an appointment in Blanchardstown hospital to get it done, with all follow up referrels in Beaumont.

Was given the information pack and prescription with the letter. Nothing about eating lightly for a few days before. Basically I can have white toast for breakfast tomorrow morning, then water only for the day. Have to start taking my first drink at 4pm tomorrow, 1 litre I think to be taken over a couple of hours. Then repeat again at 8pm.

Appointment is then Friday morning at 9.00am. Kinda dreading it(and tomorrow) but my life has literally been on hold for the last couple of years and I never thought I would get to the day where I finally get it done.

Just goes to show the difference between cork and Dublin, saw my specialist three weeks ago he wants me in for a scope up and down, letter arrived yesterday for an appointment in two weeks.
Not an urgent case either it's just to check on scarring and polyps... Madness you guys's wait time

It's odd alright. I'm Dublin based and never waited more than a couple of weeks for my scopes. Maybe because I was referred by my consultant rather than my GP?

When I first had them in Cork I was private so the wait was short there too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭livedadream

Yeah my specialist does public and private... I'm totally ignorant to if that matters if not though.
I know the mercy in cork where I go have more than one specialist though I assume that's the same for Dublin or that they have more per hospital

I was referred through a consultant in Beaumont, although when I rang numerous times I was told I was listed as routine.

They actually rang me in the new year(after being referred in June 2015) and I thought "at last, they've rang to give me my date" but no, they were ringing around people that had been waiting a while to see if they if they still wanted to be on the list or had changed their mind and wanted to be taken off!!

On a slightly unrelated note earlier this summer my GP requested an appointment with a consultant for me as I have an enlarged prostate.

Got a letter a couple of weeks later saying that that had also been classed as routine and I would be contacted six weeks before my appointment sometime in the next twelve months.

The only bright side regarding the colonoscopy appointment is, I had been waiting that long I was on the verge of going private and paying for it so i suppose I've saved myself a few quid. Guy I work with, his Mrs is getting one done and decided to pay to get it done privately as she just wanted it done as soon as possible.

I think it was a couple of hundred quid to see the consultant and the procedure will cost €1300.

I've health insurance nothing super dopper but it does the job I've to pay 130 euro a pop for the appointment with him.
The procedures etc go straight through to insurance

Ah. I'm totally relying on public as have no health insurance.

Half day in work tomorrow and then home to start my prep. Gulp!

You'll be grand baby wipes instead of toilet roll and a nice bit of sudocrem and you'll be sorted, either get a good book or charge up the laptop for the resting periods I between and once you drink it... NEVER TRUST A FART

    Thanks.

MoviPrep Orange is the solution I have to take. Read the instructions again after reading this thread to check I had read them correctly but yeah I had. One litre over a couple hours tomorrow afternoon and then another litre over a couple of hours tomorrow night.

Plan to spend the time in the bedroom. En suite to hand and main bathroom right next door. Will see how it goes though. May end up residing in one of them for most of it!

I've never taken moviprep but have actually requested it for my next scope in told it's easier to take than klean prep and picolax ... Best of luck with it the thought of its the worst bit... Oh and don't wear clothes you like doing the prep and after the scope... Just in case.

Ha, thanks a lot. I'll let you know how I get on with the moviprep. At least the volume recommended is half that of klean prep. I plan to be in my dressing gown tomorrow before starting.

Will request plenty of sedation on Friday too. The less I know about it the better!!

Moviprep is tastier than kleenprep for sure. But don't add anything else to it without trying it first (miwadi etc) as they can make it taste worse.

In my experience it's the small sachet in movicol that tastes the worst so I dissolve that separately and knock it back, and follow up with some of the other solution (which has a weird mouth feel).

Good luck. Oh and keep plenty warm on Friday morning. You'll be dehydrated and if you get too cold they'll find it harder to get a vein for sedation. And if you're still uncomfortable with sedation ask for more.

The scope itself is relatively painless. You'll be pumped with air that can be crampy and uncomfortable, and they may ask you to hold the air in rather than to fart, but the feeling passes and you'll do amazing farts for the rest of the day.

I was categorised as urgent in May, rang in July as I hadn't heard anything. Was told they had my referral but current wait time for urgent cases is 12-18 months. Haven't heard anything since.

I actually find movicol ok...I'd rather 8 glasses of that than kleanprep! I still have on sachet of kleanprep in my drawer that I never used last time, I'm going to leave it there to remind me of the horrors I endured drinking it :d

Movicol is grand. Moviprep has a separate sachet of citrate to run the guts and it's very acidic.

I was categorised as urgent in May, rang in July as I hadn't heard anything. Was told they had my referral but current wait time for urgent cases is 12-18 months. Haven't heard anything since.

    That's disgraceful. Where you based?

In Kildare, appointment is for Naas hospital so might not be as bad a wait time in James.

I've been trying to the the clinic in James' everyday and they haven't answered the phone once! I'd imagine I'll be waiting a year at this stage considering I haven't heard anything.. my GP told me the wait time should only be about 12 weeks! Defo not the case 😂

Quick update. MoviPrep first dose finished just over half an hour ago. Nothing happening so far.

Taste was no way unpleasant but is sitting in my stomach a little.

I expect the toilet will be calling soon.

Round two between 7 and 8 tonight.

Keep drinking plenty of clear fluids. 7up was my choice. I also drank some oxo cubes out of desperation.

The world will fall out of your bottom. Don't worry.

Thanks. Yes I've just had my first extended visit.

General question - I have to take Laxido (Moviciol) daily to function.
I will be asking for a colonoscopy soon - I know Laxido is a softener so does not force you to go/cramps.
The medicine for clearing you out - is that a painful cramping one?
Had dulcolax and passed out from the pain before moving on to Laxido daily.

Good luck Adox, baby wipes not paper helps.

Well I'm only half way through but not having any cramps or anything, although you can feel the pressure when you want to go.

    It's like heavy diarrhoea.

Toilet paper for me so far. :o

It depends on what meds you are given. What dose of movicol are you on daily?

Moviprep is essentially 18 sachets of movicol. It rarely fails to work. And if it does they will give you an enema.

I have a stock of prep and fleets for flares.

I know this might make me sound like a total weirdo but there's something so satisfying about finishing the prep
