In 50 years who will be the main players on the world stage?

With Brexit and Trump having the potential to change the face of the world, how do you envisage the world stage in fifty years? Do you see the rise of nations like China and India or will the UK and US still retain their places in the world's top economies?

China, maybe.

India? Unlikely. Most of their population lives on $1 a day. The poverty there is simply astonishing.

Most likely, the US will continue to be the 'main player'.

And hopefully, Britain's EU exit will go so terribly that it'll show how important and powerful the EU is, the countries in it will further unify, and it'll become the 'superpower' it was destined to be.

Or.. WW3 will break out and we'll all be obliterated.

Uk wont be united ,

Ireland will be , albit with some out breaks of violence from dissident loyalists.

Brazil & India will be major players on the world stage with Us,Russ,China,

Eu will also be a major force with England still having a lot of influence.

All the same in the middle east, different countries same problems with interference etc etc, All the countries will be much more stronger military with Israel leading the pack.

Africa, I just don't know.

If the growth of the Latin American middle class continues then countries like Brazil will certainly be richer and more influential but I'm not sure any will be world powers.

Agree with you and I would add Brazil but they won't be a super power. I think that Russia will still be big hitters, along with the USA but both will be well behind the two above. The UK and Japan will also be there or thereabouts.

Was waiting to see how long that would take. Can't see it happening but Gerry Adams will probably have been given the title of "Eternal President of SF" within the next 50 years and his remains will be on display in a mausoleum on the Falls Road.

Countries change "their places in the world's top economies" quite frequently. If we look back 50 years, for example, India was in 10th place; now it's in 7th; having overtaken Italy and Canada. Brazil wasn't even in the top ten; now it's in ninth place. The Soviet Union was in 2nd place; it no longer exists but its principal successor, Russia, is not in the top 10 today. Japan has risen from 7th place to 3rd.

The pattern seems to be that "established" countries move down the ranks fairly slowly - in 50 years, German, the UK and France have all fallen by just one place, Canada by 2 places. Italy has bobbed up and down between 9th and 7th place but now, in 8th place, is one spot higher than in 1960. Countries going up are fewer in number, but they go up faster - China and Japan have both risen by 4 places.

My guess would be that in 50 years time the top 3 will still be US, EU, China, but with China probably in first place rather than third. There'll be a couple of new entrants - South Korea, maybe Russia on the way back up, maybe Mexico or Indonesia. Countries like Germany, the UK and France will have fallen back another spot or two, and maybe Canada or Italy will have fallen out of the top 10. Obviously that could be disrupted by as-yet-unforeseen events analogous to the break-up of the Soviet Union.

China hasn't got a bright future and it knows it. That's why it's buying up resources left, right, and centre all over the world. First of all they depend on the rest of the world being rich enough to buy their stuff, that's changing but it's still a major part of their economy.

They've striped China bare. They've polluted on a scale that would put the west to shame and are find basics like clean water hard to come by in the future.

They played capitalism hard and are set to wake up with the mother of all hangover in the coming decades. They'll either fizzle out or come looking for our stuff.

America always has the potential to stay on top.

Europe is still pretty dynamic and our collaboration gives us an advantage but it's possible we'll have ripped ourselves apart by then, we'll be itching for a bit of war by then too.

Maybe computers will be sentient by then and they'll just take over. That's probably the best case scenario.

We won't though, we're a tropical ape, sure we can live in all sorts of environments but it's going to be a **** lifestyle for anyone that has to live through it. Life on earth survived an ice age that covered the entire planet in ice miles thick, so life will go on, humans will likely survive any catastrophe, but it won't be pleasant.
