While you're objecting you might apply some of this -->http://www.ledahealth.ca/pictures/subsect_tbn_vszqkNeVr0.png

Are you one that thinks that the world has gone mad for political correctness and hero worships Donald trump?

Because when people use those terms in this way its not to directly insult disabled people. Its why being called a 'fruitcake' or 'pussy' arent homophobic or sexist , theyre not said with those people in mind

What sort of answer is that ?

Do you really think people give a sh1t when you take 2 words out of context?

I use a lot of those words in day to day life. I don't feel guilty about it.

No, no, no. Her daughter is not retarded. That word was replaced by intellectually challenged or disabled. Learning difficulties is also used.

That's why retarded is ok to use as an insult because it is no longer used to describe people who have real issues.

Its difficult because in America retard is still a widely used term that isnt used pejoratively

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I always thought fruitcake was crazy not queer?

This kind of political correctness leads to the sh!t we have in America where you can be disciplined for using words on the university campus. They give you a list at reception. The one that sticks in my mind was 'throws like a girl'

Fup right off with this scat.

When I was young I used the same language, I've grown up since.

I'd certainly query why someone was calling the individual a lunatic.

Legally courts had to up until this year because we still used the Lunacy Regulation (Ireland) Act, 1871

It's disappointing the word retard gets such a bad rep. It's a legitimate word to describe something. Calling someone retarded means they are slow on the pickup.

As with most words, the intent in which they are used rules all.

I dare say that they are not said with the disabled person in mind but that doesn't make it less derogatory.

    Who says they are acceptable?

You left out Spa/Spaz which was (along with retard) probably one of the worst.

But you don't hear them nowadays, do you?

Didn't leave it out and yes, you do hear them nowadays.

I think it's a sign of a weak mind. Why use a word that has such a recent history of mocking the disabled (and often is still used that way) when there's such a glorious variety of alternatives?

Gobshíte is infinitely more satisfying than retard, poxbottle is far superior to spastic. Those with more advanced cursing skills don't need to resort to words that are offensive to people who don't deserve to be picked on. :)

FYI the word disabled is now regarded as old thinking and offensive.

For example parking spaces for the disabled should now be referred to as reduced mobility spaces.

Not once does that page say that disabled spaces have been renamed.

That's exactly what it makes it.

Damn it are we going to see disabled people 'take ownership' of these insults like blacks and gays did?

We won't get them back for years and we never even used them to insult disabled people.

What a bummer. (Not gay, upset)

Might want to get yourself a dictionary there.
It can be used as a verb. There's no way when used in that context that it can be offensive. It would not be in common use though.

It is not legitimately used as an adjective or a noun outside very specialised, niche technical terminology without being offensive and we are talking about it being an adjective or noun in this thread.

Mong, mongoloid, spanner, spaz, spastic, window licker, retard.

Why is it, that in this day and age, the above words are seen as acceptable to use as put downs towards others?

What makes it worse is that it appears to be perfectly allowable on Boards.ie without any sort of deterrent.

I thought people had moved on but it appears not.

    Yeah cleary werent affected

Can we still say idiot? How long do we have to wait until a word used to described mentally disabled people can be used as an insult?

I see this started when Kal El called Boy Racers retards in the other thread.

In fairness, you can't go around telling people what they can and can't say. He/she deems it apt and are fine with it. If you're not, then that's on you. Report it and see what the stance on it is. This thread will probably give you an indication on what people do and don't find acceptable, but ya can't expect people to censor themselves just because it offends you personally.

I never actually said retard, that was someone else. I said spastic a term commonly used for acting the maggot, like a tool. Not everything is aimed at someone
Not in relation to your post dude.

Thats selective speech. Some words are ok, but I dont like these other words so there not ok. Why should certain words you pick be the ones that are acceptable, when you take into account most people use the others in every day language
