He ended todays show by saying that, he had Monday off but would be back on Tuesday.............

Odd. Maybe it all unfolded after his show ended this afternoon

I'm shocked, really liked his show and his presenting style. Can't believe they sack him yet keep that gob****e in the afternoon.

Anton seems to be well liked in the station.
Personally I'd say Anton is a nice enough fella, but he never held me as a listener for any length of time - and this is from someone who would choose anyone over Ryan Tubridy. My overall take on his show was meh.

And I'm not alone in this - 25,000 others agreed with me over the last year.

    So its back to

" Dancing around the kitchen kids look at me and think i'm going mad"

"27 stone 8 foot tall truck driver crying at that last story"

As much as I fell out of love for Ray

Anton was a breath of fresh air you can tell he put his effort in to research who was visiting

Was really able to poke fun at himself

I for one will miss him on the long drives i have to do I used to enjoy the show.

I will watch closely with the replacement but I suspect it will be spotify/deezer for me

    fcuk and off

I'd absolutely love Foley back on the airwaves, he's hilarious. It's gas how much he winds people up the wrong way

Aw no! Best part of my drive to work was listening to Anton. Not happy. Please don't let it be Neil Delamare or Hector in instead. Bad move Todayfm.

If Delamare gets the gig then thats me finished with Today fm. Anytime he filled in for Anton I would tune out and find something else to listen too. I got the feeling that the last while Anton was not really happy with the direction the show was going in.. I commented in here that I felt the show had become a radio version of the TV show Loose Women. The show I felt became top heavy in too many female issues and lost its broader appeal...

And a lot are male also. The slots have been predominately female focused for the past 6 months or so and he was presenting a weekday Alison Curtis show.

And Alison, she just turns me off radio so I stick in a CD or fire up a playlist from my phone.

Life's just too short to spend time listening to Alison Curtis.

Curtis and F.D'arcy have me reaching for the dial, can't stand them.
Can't understand why they let him go, can't see anybody else out there who's suitable. This crap of comedians becoming presenters doesn't work either imho.

    Two words : Ray Foley...
After the interview he did where he mentioned Today FM leaving him high and dry after promising him a show, I'd be very surprised. They even cut that interview from the listen back for that day.

Maybe Anton was fired. As good as he was His numbers weren't great. His statement is particularly bitter, as if it's a parting shot across the bows. Journal. Ie saying Today Fm management are aiming at a younger audience. That would make sense judging by some of their newer presenters.

Had forgot about that, but a very good point tbh.

I'm disappointed but not surprised at this news.

I think it's probably a case of leaving before he was sacked tbh. Listenership has gone down 41,000 in 2 years. Whatever about the 65% figure Anton quoted, losing that many listeners and showing no sign of bottoming out made this departure an inevitability.

Hard to see where Today FM go from here. Their figures are in free-fall pretty much across the day, and there's no obvious replacement this time like there was after D'Arcy left.

Good point. It's not inconceivable that management have recognised Today Fms listenership is ageing and leaving the station, and the way to grow audience is to pitch at a younger listener. Savage it could be argued is too cerebral for the direction the station wants to go, and hence the references to disagreement on format, guests and music. If management have in fact fired him, they lost the PR war immediately, by being beaten to the punch by Antons tweet. It's either a very very brave move by today Fm or a daft one, that is of course if he has been fired rather than stepping down.

Really disappointed, used to love listening to the podcast of the show in the evening. Always something of interest. I always got the impression that he was interested in what his guests had to say, not like his predecessor.

Mod: Just FYI, merged the other thread in here. No need for a separate thread IMO.

Well that's a stupid situation for todayfm to have found themselves in. And the CEO who if I'm right is the former 98fm CEO sounds like he isn't making good decisions and is trying to handcuff his presenters on their own shows which isn't going to help.

I saw a rumour that Colm o Sullivan was leaving as program director but im not sure if that is just that a rumour.

Not surprised really. Don't get to listen to the show anymore due to work but I happened to be in the car today and caught a bit of the show and he seemed to be dialing it in. He's more suited to the serious stuff like Matt Cooper's show. He just didn't have the warmth or the everyman appeal for a fluffy daytime show imo.

Yeah, I stopped listening a while ago, the show had no direction, didn't know what to be, lighthearted or serious. You'd have great days with the header from Sligo and his airplane, tune in another day and it's nothing but misery, disease and death, infringing on Joe Duffy territory. Makes you switch off his show for the day, eventually you just don't bother tuning in.

Maybe this is where the conflict came in, one side wanted to be all serious and current affairs and the other a lighthearted magazine. If should have stayed as the latter and done away with all pretence of being a serious show, there's enough of that the rest of the day.

    Damn I'm gonna miss Anton.

This was such an improvement on Darcy - they were like night and day.

At the same time though there was an awful lot of dross too. Guests such as Roz Purcell Vogue etc and those awful problem slots.

Anton leaving is going to leave a massive hole in my day. I doubt the radio will be switched on at all. God I'm going to need an awful lot of podcast's to get me through the day now

I only wish that RTE had got Anton for the afternoon show, instead of D'Arcy. Anton is fresh, easy going and fun, the complete antithesis of that opinionated, pedantic D'Arcy. Any chance they could bring him in somewhere in RTE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,743 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

Wonder what went on behind the scenes?

I always liked Anton when he stood in for D'Arcy and felt an immediate upswing in the mood of the show when he took it over from his predecessor.

Some of the facts he came out with (probably from thousands of hours of watching Discovery and National Geographic) were mad! He was a good interviewer, did his research on guests and could never be described as boring in my book.

The last interview today was with somebody who wrote some cook book or the likes. I turned off as I usually do with these segments but now I'm disappointed I missed his last piece on the Today FM airwaves.

No choice at all now in the mornings. Cant listen to Tubs, will have enough of current affair pieces in the evening without listening to Kenny or O Rourke.

It'll be podcasts and spotify for me from now on.

I'm sure his mammy and daddy are working on that as we speak.
    It's how RTE works anyway.

Maybe Anton left Today FM so he could have the soup in the RTE canteen everyday.

He might even tell a story about it the day he starts in RTE.;););)

Rarely tune in as its but on at work but I liked him when I did hear him.
I liked the chats between anton and the presenters either side of him too.

If today fm are getting rid of his because he's to 'cerebral' then God helps us all.... We really are in the age of the "information information everywhere but we still are getting dumber".

I'll follow him wherever he goes. Can't see it being with an INM station, which would be a pity cos his show before moncreiff would be three prefect morning.

Can't stand Fergal Darcy though. The guy tries hard and he's very inoffensive but he has mannerisms that just grate me.

he played Jeremy by Pearl Jam a few weeks ago. possibly the best few minutes on irish radio this year.
probably back to 6 music for me, i never listened when there was a stand in presenter.

his disdain at doing the make up bit last week now seems like an inkling on what he thought about the content of the show, although earlier this week when he went on a rant about how porridge is just gick or gloop was hilarious, especially when you consider the sense of sacrilege that would have been with his predecessor.

Today fm didn't waste much time getting rid of all traces of Anton on the website.

"...Mr Savage stated that he made the decision to quit following a number of disagreements with station management..."

Yeah. I'd say it went exactly along the lines of this:
They believed he should be sacked. And he disagreed.

    A gentleman's disagreement my arse.

Always found something sinister about Anton Savage and it stunk of an Irish culture we don't really want here anymore. Goodbye and good riddance. Our airwaves will be all the better.

I dont buy this crap of appealing to younger listeners. If that's the case why have dempsey and Cooper there.
If they're thinking that the likes of Fergal d'arcy and that breakfast Republic is good radio and what attracts younger people then the future of radio is very bleak.
Why can't there just be a station that plays music with a bit of chat about interesting topics and not what Kim kardsian had for breakfast or Kanye latest rant.
