    Stranger in a Strange Land

Syfy to Adapt Classic Sci-Fi Novel ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’
Robert Heinlein’s 1961 science fiction novel “Stranger in a Strange Land” is getting its first-ever TV treatment. Syfy is adapting the book as a new drama, currently in development from Paramount Television and Universal Cable Productions.

“Stranger in a Strange Land” follows the story of Valentine Michael Smith, a human who was raised on Mars and comes to Earth. It’s the latest classic sci-fi novel to wind up in development at Syfy, which is also looking to adapt “Brave New World.”

Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt and William Sherak of Mythology Entertainment, Scott Rudin, Garrett Basch and Eli Bush of Scott Rudin Productions, and Joe Vecchio of Vecchio Entertainment are executive producers on “Stranger in a Strange Land.”

“This novel has resonated with me since college and there’s a reason it has continued to find new fans for over forty years,” said Paramount TV president Amy Powell. “Syfy’s understanding of imaginative and futuristic programming is unmatched, making them an ideal partner for this series.”

NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Chairman Bonnie Hammer said “Stranger” was one of her favorite books. “The story is timeless and resonates more than ever in today’s world,” she said.

Previous titles adapted from Heinlein novels include the “Starship Troopers” films.

Grimm creators Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt are continuing their partnership with Grimm EP’s Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner, to create Treasure for NBC.

Described as an ‘action adventure mystery’, Treasure follows a group of grad students from Washington, DC who accidentally uncover a 40-year-old secret which leads them on a wild ride through history, as they attempt to unravel an unsolved murder, find hidden blood money, and avoid being killed by an assassin from the past.

The CW have announced their mid season schedule, but there is no sign of No Tomorrow or Frequency. Hopefully that's not bad news, I really like both shows. Maybe both are better suited to shorter seasons? Season finales for both will be in January.

They were only ever going to get 13 episodes for their first seasons though, just because of real estate reasons on The CW and all the other shows that have to be crammed in post-Christmas. That article is very misleading by even mentioning "full-season order" in this case, as it never applied.
Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Supernatural and Jane The Virgin are they only shows getting full seasons on CW, everything else is getting 13-17 episodes regardless (which is definitely a much better system and ensures quality over quantity).

You know, just as well. I realised that with all the CW shows I now watch, that's still 140 episodes of CW TV this year...

    Snowpiercer

TNT Orders ‘Snowpiercer’ Pilot Based On Movie From Tomorrow Studios
TNT has given a pilot order to Snowpiercer, a futuristic thriller drama based on the acclaimed 2013 feature by Bong Joon Ho that starred Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and Song Kang-ho. The pilot will be co-produced by Tomorrow Studios — Marty Adelstein’s joint venture with ITV Studios — and Turner’s Studio T.

Tomorrow Studios optioned the rights to Snowpiercer last year, tapping Josh Friedman, who has extensive futuristic/sci-fi credentials, to write the series adaptation. Friedman previously created the Fox series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, also based on a movie franchise, and has written/co-written such movies as War Of The Worlds and some of the Avatar sequels.

Snowpiercer is set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, and the remnants of humanity inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. The show questions class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival. In addition to producing a pilot, the project is getting backup scripts written.

Friedman serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Also executive producing the pilot are Tomorrow Studios’ Adelstein (Aquarius, Prison Break, Teen Wolf, Last Man Standing) and Becky Clements (Aquarius, Last Man Standing); the original film’s Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hunand Dooho Choi; and CJ Entertainment, which distributed the South Korean movie based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette.

“Snowpiercer has one of the most original concepts to hit the screen in the last decade, and it’s one that offers numerous opportunities for deeper exploration in a series format,” said Sarah Aubrey, EVP Original Programming at TNT. “We look forward to expanding TNT’s relationship with Tomorrow Studios and their take on a world where humanity is pushed to the extreme.”

Snowpiercer marks TNT’s third pilot from Tomorrow Studios’ Adelstein and Clements. TNT previously ordered Good Behavior, starring Michelle Dockery, which went to series that debuted earlier this month, and last month TNT picked up a pilot for the vampire thriller Let The Right One In, based on the bestselling novel by Swedish author John Ajvide, which is also a co-production between Studio T and Tomorrow Studios.

CBS Isn't Ordering More Episodes of Pure Genius.

It's one of those new cancelation forms, in which they decide not to order any more episodes beside the already ordered 13.

And while it's not a formal cancelation not ordering more episodes of a show is almost always a tell-tale sign that it is canceled.

Yeah and they have been showing episodes out of order so not good news for the show.

I remember the movie which was ok; I think it has potential for a series but I can't see it go much beyond a season or at a stretch two.

That's nonsense and frankly not how cast pay works.

Agents aren't stupid enough to demand more money than the show actually makes per season. New deals are negotiated on how much the show is making (and part of the cast deal is an increased ownership of the show itself - therefore the longer the show goes on and the more money it makes, the more the cast make in excess of their basic salary).

Secondly, the show is IIRC the highest rated half hour show on television. Deadline reported in 2014 that the production company WBTV had cleared $1bn in profits (i.e. after the cost of making the show including cast salaries have been deducted).

At the same time Vulture reported that the show made $2m per half hour from syndication alone.

Again, at the same time, Forbes reported that CBS "commands a staggering $326,260 per 30-second spot, far more than NBC’s The Voice ($264,575 for the higher-rated Wednesday night show), ABC’s Modern Family ($257,435) and Fox’s The Simpsons ($256,963)".

I've been catching up on this and it gets surprisingly good. The first episode was a jumbled mess, but the story settled down nicely and got pretty twisty. Very like Scandal. Episode 10 is in a few weeks - it'll be interesting to see where they leave things for the finale (unfortunately, I suspect wide open).
