The UFC are weird. No 2nd belt in the octagon for McGregor's historic win.

immediately stripping him of featherweight. If I were McGregor I would never fight in UFC again. Fight with Rizin.

You gotta feel signing the 8 fight contract 3 or 4 fights ago was an awful idea in hindsight by Conor can you imagine he had 1 fight left now on his contract.

can a guy fight out his contract and leave as champ though? doesnt the champions clause kick in then?

I thought the champions clause stopped when they stripped him, didn't realise he was still under it, doubt he'll leave now though, if they go ahead with stripping mcgregor I can see them throwing money at gsp to come back

They can throw as much money at gsp as they like. The only people interested in seeing gsp back at it are like ourselves. Sadly for the ufc that makes up a very small % of ppv.

Good to see the belt being relinquished. Now for McGregor/khabib

More chance of Elvis appearing cageside at 206 than Conor fighting Khabib especially after them stripping him of a belt he will dig his heels in now and make them do an interim 155 fight.

To people saying the FW title fights will go on Fight Night cards again, I don't think so.

McGregor brought a lot of exposure to the guys in that division. People will tune in and hope whoever wins between Max and Pettis beats Aldo. Max, Frankie and Aldo have huge exposure now.

The fact they've stripped him will grab headlines, people will be interested to see how this fight goes and the subsequent fight with Aldo. It's a good move from the UFC, because to be fair, there was less value in having Conor not defending it than not having Conor in the division at all.

Be quite funny if over the next 12 months the FW's scrap it out for the belt a few times, then Conor drops back down, destroys the champ again in less than 30 seconds

Aldo has said hes retired or did i miss an announcement?

    Yeah, almost instantly
    He was never actually retired.

I thought he did, but I might be imagining it.

He did retire, said he wanted to peruse other sports but backtracked about 2 weeks later.

Yep. Im sure both men would like a rematch same as mcgregor got when he was decisively beaten.

You should @ SubMarcos so he can rewrite history and tell us how Nate lit Conor up on the feet in the first fight one more time. The casual lies never get old.

I was refer to that statement. I thought he released a backtracking, but couldn't find it (difficult with his docisl media being mostly Portuguese).

The "retirement" was about as real as Conor's "thanks for the cheese". Mention USADA and he dropped it pretty quick I'd guess.

Ah I see, think it was this tweet

Rethinking retirement in MMA, I talked to my family and seeing the requests of my fans, good things shall come to you. Thanks Russia

    Conor's response should be interesting.

Does anyone really want to see Conor come out to a weigh in looking very unwell again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭CurryFlavoured

I've said a few times that Conor could be stripped because I don't think it's right that he's fought numerous times outside 145, but the circumstances here are a joke. It's all because they need a main event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭CurryFlavoured

In the end though, I think it's a fair call. The way it's come about is annoying.

He's fought 3 times without defending the belt so I'd consider that fair, I'm not sure he has any intention of going back to 145 so you could say it was inevitable. The 145 division should still be super exciting for fight fans, circus or no circus. Loads of good matchups between Aldo, Holloway, Pettis, Frankie. Doo Ho Choi is a quality prospect, Ortega, Bektic, Yair etc. Still one of the deepest divisions in the UFC. Loads of nice fights for Conor to focus on at 155 now.

Why does Holloway Pettis even need to be for an interim belt at all?! Weird decision.

Because 206 lost its main event and they need a title fight. Same way when Aldo dropped out Mendes stepped in, it didnt have to be an interim title on the line but they need a title fight for numbered events!

When Mendes stepped in, there was already a FW title booked for the spot, and the champ was now gonna be out for 6 months.
This is nothing like that imo.

Most numbered events have title fights, but it's not a rule that it needs it to be PPV. Whether they made it an interim title or not, the card is the same. So I wonder does it actually affect the buys?
